UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I don't see the point in calling Whitehead. .
Neither do I. I can see calling Abbott but even that gets to be obnoxious after awhile. Nothing is going to happen during the season so calling non stop is going to do nothing but make one look bad.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

For those concerned Maine finishes too high, which keeps Timmy around another year or two. I agree this is a big concern. Maine might be terrible. They might only have one line with scary bad goaltending and defense, but look around the rest of the league. UVM and UMass stink. NU was rock bottom until they won a few games lately. UML and PC are improved, but I think they'll fall back to Earth.

the internet nutcases (the only ones buying tickets anymore) and apologists (who either have not been due to not being allowed out of their mother's basement, or due to having children attend other Hockey East Schools) are used to Maine not only finishing top 4 in the league, but also contending at least 50% of the time for a national title.

finishing 4th and not getting to the NCAA tournament is not something that many of us care to witness.
WE helped build the team, we donated we traveled to a zillion away games, we went to banquets and bought all the trinkets, posters, antique FOMH newsletters, and then donated them back to be re-auctioned... it WAS a team that we felt part ownership in... back when Shawn told us it was our team and when he sold us on MAINE HOCKEY

Tim does not get that. Tim does not understand that the good players used to come to Maine to play for Shawn and to be developed by Shawn and Grant.... that is all gone. Tim comes across as saying "they come to wear the sweater", "there is honor in the sweater"

The players went there to be taught how to make it to the next level.

This is Tim's team, Tim's system and Tim's failure.
Have at it Tim... you couldda saved a lot of face had you taken that Hamilton job a couple years ago... you couldda retired in 20 years as a successful D3 coach and maybe a D3 legend, instead people are all going to remember the Spencer Penrose Trophy that accidentally had your name on it, when it should have read GRANT STANDBROOK at the bottom.

that is part of the problem... too many people did not see any point in doing any of the things that would have helped to right the ship.
about 6 years ago, I posted pictures of dead canaries on this board... I listened to the gray haired wise hockey minds that told me that it was all over in Orono, when I did not yet see it for myself.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I think you guys should start recruiting Sneddon and get him out of VT!!!!! Please!!!:D

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I think calling TIMMAY directly is obnoxious, and borders on harassment.. Not to mention low class. His personal life is his, and leave it out of this thing. Doesn't do anything for making the case that he has to go, except make the people who hold that view look bad.

His record of futility, and increasing inability to right the ship, should be all the evidence that's needed.

He does not have to answer the phone and he is a public employee.

and something even worse is happening when HE makes phone calls... good hockey prosepects don't answer

I don't disagree its over in Orono but I see calling Tim in bad taste. I think posting his number isn't right either. I'm surprised USCHO hasn't taken down the post. No one in their right mind would quit a job when you have a contract, its as simple as that. Call the AD, Call the President, Call the FOMH but calling Tim isn't right.

For your information mr walrus that number is posted by the University of Maine under Tim's Bio on the athletic site. So its a public number if you have an issue with it maybe you should contact the school if you don't like it being public. Bad taste would be if somebody called him and shouted swears at him or left him obsceane voice messages. I see no problem if one calls him and talks to him or leaves him a non threatning or degrating message. If you call like I have just calming and profesionaly tell him why you think he should step down. Tim has stopped takeing calls on his coaches show every week after the team loses maybe by fans calling him at work he will re open the phone lines to his radio show. Tim never has to answer any tough questions from the local fluff media that covers the team. He makes a lot of money expecialy for how bad the team has preformed the last 5 seasons. If he doesn't like the calls he gets from fans at work he has the option of going to the powers to be at Maine and getting his number changed and no longer posted publicly by the school on its website or he can make all of our dreams come true and step down.

Again for anyone that would like to call Coach Whitehead at his hockey office here is the number 207-581-1108

This is the number you want: 207-581-1052 (Hint: It's Steve Abbott)

What incentive does Timmay have to change his coaching style based on your phone call?

As far as he's concerned he got his undeserved extension and can continue to put the same under-performing bubblegum team out there night after night until someone stops him. Your best bet towards making that happen would be Abbott.

Unless you have a lot of $$$$. ;)

Latest USCHO Poll:

#1 Merrimack
#9 Union
#11 Lake Superior State

I guess that you just have to have to be a tiny D-3 type program with sub par facilities these days to be successful.........

I want Maine to be another Lake Superior State!!! :)

I don't necessarily disagree with your goals, I disagree with what you believe will help get to that goal. Obviously Tim has a listed number, that doesn't mean anyone should call it. Do you really think if, lets say 200 people call, that he'll quit because of those calls?

I agree here. I think Whitehead should go as much as anyone, and if people want to advocate for that on the "grassroots" level, fine. But this is up there with the Senior Night debacle that was completely unproductive and embarrassing.

STOP SPENDING MONEY ON THIS PROGRAM. That is the way to really take a stance and something that Abbott will REALLY understand. It's all about $$$$.......withhold enough of it, and suddenly it makes good business sense to can Whitehead! :)

Right... AND, do the next step... let Abbott know that you will START spending that same money once he tells Tim to hit the bricks.... that there is money waiting.

Tim already told the BDN that the only reason the seats are empty is the economy... we gotta make sure Abbott knows that it is not the economy.

And it's also hard to recruit at Maine. Apparently harder than it is for Merrimack.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Here is a really scary scenario: The team finally starts to jell a bit more with the freshman and second line producing consistently. .....And Sullivan finally starts to get it by not chasing pucks outside the net. .....And they finish 4-5th in Hoc. East. ......And the coach secures his job for yet another year. Is this at least possible? I'm afraid they have just enough talent to do just that. Maybe.

(...And just enough to finish last, too.)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the Whitehead years have seen Maine going from perennial contender status to the level of also-ran, and I don't see anything short of of a NC in April justifying his keeping his job. (That's never gonna happen, of course.)

His track record is abysmal by Maine standards, and there's no reason to believe that it's going to get any better. He's just playing out the string.
