UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

Re: UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

And Congrats to UMD for becoming the latest school to earn an NCAA title in hockey and will now force the NCAA to have to hang another banner every year at the Frozen Four.
Oh yeah! Duluth will now take the spot between Minnesota and North Dakota. Thanks for moving them over!

Re: UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

My congratulations to UMD as well. I remember watching that game vs. Bowling Green all those years ago, and I don't think I ever saw a team get more thoroughly boofed on a total fluke play. Glad you're now in the ranks of the winners, and thanks for doing the WCHA proud.

Re: UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

I just finished watching the game on Tivo. I forgot to say that I was impressed with the Michigan players following the game. They even gave a stick salute to the fans.

I am so happy for the Dogs! Great game, great tournament, and great season. After a great start they struggled a little and put it all back together for the tournament run. Enjoy this you deserve it.

First team since 1993 (Maine) to be a first time winner in NCAA Hockey. Its pretty amazing that for 18 years, it was all repeat winners. Welcome to the club (and no, New Hampshire, you are never welcome to join).

Re: UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

ahhh amazing game. Thank you so much UMD for doing that. All of my UofM friends know how into college hockey i am and being a Michigan State fan, i would have never heard the end of it. I got plenty of it after the NoDak game so this was such a relief.

EDIT: OH! and congrats on the title! It's the most amazing feeling in the world. I still get warm and excited thinking back on MSU's 2007 NC.

Re: UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

Winner of the title game will be announced in exactly 30 minutes. If the refs are Bennedetto and Bunyon it will be UMD. Anyone else and Michigan will win. You heard it here first.

It's B&B so UMD will win.
Nice call!

Were those the same guys who did the game with Union? I think they were in Bridgeport.
JT Brown was voted most outstanding player. Not really a surprise he was incredible tonight. I do feel bad for the Michigan goalie, he was great in the Frozen Four.
JT Brown was ALL over the night.

So much for just having one line! :)
I am SO pumped, we'll see everybody on Wednesday! Way to go Dogs! Two national titles in the same academic year and the first new NCAA Men's Hockey Champion since 1993!
Wednesday?

Three national titles during my time in school. Pretty farking awesome. My super senior year ends in a national title.
Congrats to UMD, but let's talk about what's really important here:

Is Buick ****ing stingy or what? I don't think there was enough room to fit a golf ball through that hole, much less a puck.
This games rigged.
Congratulations, Bulldogs!! That was a job well done in overtime.

When UMD came into the WCHA in '65, I ran the pressbox for Michigan hockey games and wondered how long it would take the "new guys" to get their first national championship. I was just browsing Wikipedia around 10:30 and it said, "On April 9, 2011, the Bulldogs beat the Michigan Wolverines in overtime 3-2 to win their first national championship in hockey." Thank you for finally settling that.
Wow you're old :D

Took us long enough but the wait was long and worth it!

I remember reading an article on USCHO at the beginning of the season. I never would have guessed it would be us.

I have never cried from so much joy before in my life. I truely never thought I would see it happen during my lifetime. Given our history I thought we would find a way to blow it.

This one is for all the UMD fans who have suffered through thick and thin. For all the players who came so close or the players who put everything into a seven win season.

I am just a very lucky man who in his 5th year of being a UMD fan, got to see his team to win it all.

And of course:

Nice call!

Congrats to UMD on the NCAA Title. They were the better team and Faulk was a horse out there while outplaying the opponent. Finish 4th in the WCHA Regular Season, Lost to Bemidji in the Final Five, but parlay that into a NCAA Title as the #9 seed.

Nice call on the refs from the Hockey East people. Not seeing UMD play much this year, did #12 Jack Connolly ever get any embellishment calls this year? UMD did there part in drawing penalties from Michigan. J Connolly drew two marginal calls, jumping into the net (over the imaginary land mine in the crease) to draw the first period interference penalty on Winnett, then going into a shell on the boards to draw the boarding call on Lynch in the 3rd. UMD did agitate Michigan, a good plan to frustrate them by going down easily, along with M Connolly swiping the puck in the net after the whistle which prompted the Hunwick/JT Brown penalties. Michigan's weakness this year was not really playing all that smart and taking dumb penalties, some of those tonight were also prompted by unforced turnovers.)

Michigan did overachieve this year. The Frozen Four lived up to its billing with three very close games.

Actually Jack Connolly took probably over 100 hits to the head over the season that were never called. Same with Mike.

Mike Seidel took an embellishment penalty this year for being checked from behind into the boards. So, there's that. Does that make you feel better?

There was a hole in that thing. I thought the contestant had to power the sign into the net or flip the puck in the air and roll it off the back side.

Don't forget the wicked two hand slash he took to the wrist against Wisco.

Both Connollys were abused this year...that was the game plan for most teams.

Welcome home celebration tenatively set for 6pm Wednesday at Amsoil. Also. there's a good chance I actually care more about the Women's team than you do as I have been to about 15 of their games in my life, including the fantastic 2003 title game at the DECC, but they also won two titles while you were at school, if my math is right, which would bring your career total to five.

Re: UMAA vs UMD for all the marbles

Congrats to UMD. You were the better team last night.

A few observations:

1. If Michigan beat NoDak based on a better game plan, I think that you can say the same for Duluth last night. Michigan frustrated CC and NoDak by clogging the passing lanes. UMD seemed to realize this. Their strategy seemed to be to make a quick first pass before Michigan could set up, and if that failed, skate right at 'em instead of trying to pass through them. I thought that their puck movement was excellent once they gained the zone, too.

2. Michigan seemed to have trouble all year with stupid passes in their own zone, so I thought it was appropriate that we were in the situation for the losing goal based on a bad pass out of our zone.

3. I don't have a complaint about a single penalty, nor about the disallowed "goal" in the first period. UMD knew how to agitate and a few of our freshman did stupid things.

4. Michigan's penalty kill was awesome as it has been all tournament...but 10 penalty kills will take something out of your legs, and it showed in OT. UMD looked far more energetic.

Well said. I also believe UND was frustrated when they couldn't score. I think it put more pressure on themselves and in the end hurt them. UMD knew it would be difficult to score (and I assume) were coached to be patience and not worry about having difficulty scoring.

UMD's PK in the Frozen Four held opponents scoreless in nine opportunities. ND and UMAA registered 4 shots total on those PP's. Plus UMD won faceoffs by a 45 to 25 margin. The 0 for 9 of Union and 3 for 9 of Yale combined with the Frozen Four means that UMD's PK was 3 for 27. Not too shabby :)
