Why is the B1G interested in BU and not BC?
BU-high research, 15k under, 15k post, 1+ endow, great hockey brand.
BC lacks over half those things.
The B1G wants like minded institutions to create a juggernaut money wise in sports, research and student population.
The deal is, if the B1G adds UConn, besides CT market wise they boost nyceye balls more which could lead to a higher charge per cable subscriber. As for Boston, UConn has a small base of alums and fans. By itself it's not enough to turn on all the cable boxes(base channel). So how do you get that? You add BU hockey. Take the amount of students, alums and fans of BU in the Boston market and add them to UConn base and all other alums and fans of the B1G in the Boston market and together that number represents a large enough percentage of the population that getting the B1G network on basic is doable. It happened in NYC and DC recently with MD and JHU. Same thing.
Why would BU move? Well I asume 9 out of 10 here would call me a terrorist for even getting this far but they don't understand big time sports and how money outside as well as inside sports matters.
What is BUs TV payout right now in HE? Right now each B1G hockey school makes 2mil off tv payouts for puck, it will get better with more markets added plus a new TV contract in 2017.
BU recently became AAU, very impressive. If they move to the B1G they can join the CIC which will boost them even more research wise.
A couple years ago on the Yard I wrote about BU being interested in this, it's a big move by them to upgrade the whole school. The research aspect was part one of it. The other part of it was that the Big East was eventually going to expand to 16 longterm. They were supposedly becoming good friends with the B1G and going to have other sports and basketball relationships to benefit the fact of geography and common ground among many of both leagues members.
The big east at the time was looking at
Drake, Creighton, DePaul, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, Nova, Gtown, SJU, SHU, Marq, Prov for 12 and then talking about how to get to 14/16. They eventually put the breaks on it at 10 for now as things shake out but clearly a bigger league is wanted longterm. SLU along with Boston U is uniquely positioned to sell itself to the Big East as a gem. They are a project on the court, but the private school and market identity is highly valued by that league. The big east makes 5mil per team in TV payouts, what does BU make right now?
BU could literally add 7 mil in TV money overnight and take a huge step in brand exposure to the masses, research and separating itself from all other Boston schools and branding itself as Bostons school vs all others(for real...)
Seriously tho, why do we have to live through a 20 something day break? I'm bored as duck.
