UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

this mornings Hartford Courant had a piece on UConn's upcoming schedule. Opening the season on the road at Penn State for 2 games. And apparently the Colorado College game, and a couple of others will be played in Bridgeport. The Qunnipiac game is now questionable as a result of fall out from the decision to skip the Frozen Classic.

Got a link? The Courant Search function doesn't show it.

Bizarre, the NH Register piece says almost nothing about UConn and the Courant piece is not in their online edition.

With UConn joining Hockey East this season, are they playing some or all there games at the Hartford CC or breaking it up with some @ the old venue and some at the HCC..? What is the Plan on a New on Campus Arena..? Good Luck and Welcome to Hockey East.

Most games will be in Hartford, with 5 games in Bridgeport at Webster bank Arena, and a few non-conference games on campus. They are in planning stages for the new on-campus barn/team facility. Once that is built it will be safe to say most games will be played there, Cav is on record saying he wants to play a few in Bridgeport every year, and I can see the XL Center being phased out. Maybe some others on here can elaborate more, but it seems as though UCONN was promised a separate stand alone locker room at the XL Center when they agreed to play there originally...and that has not been done. Once the new on-campus barn is built, I really see no reason why they would need to play in Hartford at the XL Center anymore.

Good info and Thanks...Maine schedule has Maine @ UConn/Storrs,CT for one game Feb.1st and one @ Maine(date tba). A NEW on Campus Arena is a must for Div.1 Hockey Programs...I've seen the Quinnipiac Arena and its a very good venue for hockey...do you think that UConn would go with a model like that? With a Cap @ between 3000 and 3500?

From what I have heard barn size was dictated by HE when they accepted us (minimum 5,000 capacity). My recollection from the HE invite acceptance presser is that any conference games will be played in Hartford at the XL Center. That being the case..size ranges I have heard for new on-campus barn/facility are anywhere from 5000 to 6500. My best guess is it will be at least 5000-5500, and will contain luxury boxes or be expandable to contain them down the road. The University bought a parcel of land a few years ago that is pretty much between the Fieldhouse and the Public Safety complex. That is where the barn/facility is rumored to be going. If that is the case, it will put it right down the road from Gampel...and VERY easy for students to access on foot. If they build it there it won't be isolated like Freitas is now, and will quickly become a popular venue for students.

Ok..and yes the Students are key...plus the Luxury Boxes(added revenue each year)

Are we talking about where the police station is? No field house out there... We talking near the rec center? Are we talking near x lot and hilltop?

X Lot property...adjacent to the new student rec center that the BOT recently passed to build. That was the last place the sports editor for the Daily Campus had heard they were seriously looking at.

Oh, ok. About time they replaced the rec center. That place was horrible. One of the few things that was better at Lowell.

Build it across the street from Teds and allow re-entry between periods!

My understanding is there will be some sharing of facilities (well not facilities, but more things like utilities ) by building boththe new student rec center and the hockey facility adjacent to each other. And the location works well, too. For the time being they'll play most games in Hartford with a few non-conference games at Freitas and the holiday tournament plus 3 other games in Bridgeport. Rumor I heard is that Quinnipiac will be an annual thing and will always be at either Bport or XL, but who knows. Always could mean until 2016 when the new barn is supposed to open.

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

I like the make-up of the non-conference schedule.

Too many games in Bridgeport, but I suppose it is much cheaper to play there and it makes for a good bargaining chip for negotiating with the XL Center. Doesn't do much to build fan support in THIS area though. Oh well, for the first couple years practically all the games will be against new opponents, so we won't get bored.

I'm with you. You want to play the tourney there, I'm fine with that. But you are not building your base for the future by playing all over the state. The basketball teams can do it because they have been remarkably successful. Hockey is, for all intents and purposes, a new undertaking trying to build a new fan base. Five games in Bridgeport are about 3 too many.
