UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

It used to be 20. About two decades ago the NCAA forced a ten percent reduction on all sports. Soccer has a maximum of 9.9 I think. How football came out of that exercise with 85 I have no idea.

I believe hockey is among the "equivalent" sports where 18 scholarships can be split up pretty much as many ways as you want and as will be effective. FBS Football and basketball are the only ones that are still required to be full rides, I think.

Dick, if I recall correctly, when the current limits were set, football settled on 85 down from something like 110. At the time some schools were basically stockpiling players and offering scholarships merely to keep them from going to others then refusing to allow them to transfer. Again if I recall, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Pittsburgh (I know, which doesn't belong and why?) were among those programs accused of doing that.

They do split up scholarships. Hockey has a cap of 18 scholarships. What you will see is a kid getting what they call a "two for four (50%)" scholarship, three for four (75%), or four for four (100%). Basically they then just get those amount of years paid for, and then are responsible for the rest. I would assume they could get whatever financial aid they qualify for to help with the unpaid years.

So it's what I said it was

RPI blog Without a Peer post about UConn http://www.withoutapeer.com/2014/06/know-your-enemy-uconn.html.

I have no connection to WaP except as a reader.
Excellent review. We Huskies fans don't quite know what to expect either. We are hoping the team is competitive in 90-95% of its games and can squeak out a few wins on the year. That would be a good start. Finishing out of the cellar would be even better. Many of us remember the years when Union was essentially winless and the butt of many ECAC jokes. So we are going to be humble and root for the same kind of improvement over the long haul.

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

Jeff Jacobs of the Hartford Courant just tweeted that an announcement on UConn's on-campus barn is imminent. At least that is the surmise as his source would only say (or permit him to say) an on-campus athletic facility and that the announcement would be major.

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

I first reported this last night. I've been told it is the case, despite a rebuke from a school spokesman. Jeff Jacobs supposedly received confirmation of this from two school sources. I believe it to be the truth and am sticking by my guns on this one.

And below is Jeff Jacobs' tweet:

Sorry I didn't know how to embed them right here.

Dick I reached out to a friend of mine who works for one of the public safety agencies on campus yesterday after seeing the tweets. I asked him if he knew where the proposed location of the new barn will be..his response was where the Field House is presently located.

Wow. That implies more than one building in this announcement.

No clue just yet, but it was $7, I think. Perhaps $10? No need for advanced tix. Just belly up to the ticket window. Probably just the lower bowl open. Best seats for hockey are in the corners at the bottom of the aisles that only go half way down.

From what I have been told I wouldn't be surprised if the new barn/team facilities are announced in conjunction with the new student rec center. It would make sense since taking away the Field House removes not only student rec areas but indoor track and field facilities and some other team facilities as well.
