UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

The press release said 5211. Probably the number of tickets sold (UConn'a standard practice). The barn is configured for 8,000+ for UConn hockey. I doubt is was 50% full. And a good 500+ were Mainiacs. Gotta love the support their fans give their team although they probably have a lot of alums within a 2 hour drive of Hartford. The reciprocal statement cannot be made about Orono and UConn alumni.

I'm sure outside of UNH and UVM they don't get a big number of visiting HE team fans up in Orono due to the ride. I would say that Cav has to be in the running for HE Coach of the year with the job he has done so far this year..especially with only 10 scholarships and 9 freshman.

Not many make it up to Orono, no, it's pretty much at the end of the world. Cav would have to take UConn into the top five or six to really have a shot at winning the COY, otherwise Quinn turning BU from just about worst to the top of the league, with even more freshman is the leader by a good margin right now.

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

A UConn 5k so really like what 1500?

While Quinn may win it for the suck to RS championship 1 year turnaround, it's been done on the back of a once in a generation player that he didn't have any influence on him coming to BU. Take Eichel off BU they're probably a .500 team in HE.

What Cav has done is much more impressive.

So, should York's accolades while Gaudreau was there be overlooked? That said, you could also make a heck of a case for Bazin as well, depending on where they end up finishing. Picked to finish seventh. While Cav has done an extraordinary job, it would be a bit difficult to justify coach of the year to the team who finished eighth of 12.

York has won HE COY what 2x in 20 years?

Bazin is a hell of a coach.

I would tend to agree. But getting into the top five or six is not impossible. Perhaps only a 33% chance but still a solid possibility.

This is a great point and really supports the reason why, if UConn hosts a first round playoff series, Coach Cav deserves COY. If we apply the same thinking, where Jerry York gets overlooked because BC is supposed to be good, the opposite has to be true for UConn and Coach Cav. Compare HE traditions (UConn = none), compare scholarships (UConn 10 rest of league 18), compare expectations (UConn unanimously picked last by every HE coach) and it's not even close who deserves it. Although as we have seen in years past, the most deserved does not always win.

Granted UConn has to finish strong for Cav to have any consideration.

The one thing this does cement is his reputation as one of the best, if not the best, recruiter in the country. For his first class to be this effective and this competitive is astounding. Where are all those people who were barking on this board that his recruiting success was strictly due to selling the best product (BC)? Clearly not the case.

That would be hokydad. His dog could recruit national championship teams at BC.
He really said that. :D

Any points are good points in February. Providence also played Friday and had 5 days off. You could feel the Huskies running out of gas, they definitely stole a point.

From a PC perspective, Cav should be HE COY with the job he has done with less scholarships and a competitive team

With the save Gillies made on Wight's 1 timer off the 2 on 1 from Richardson it was more like PC stealing a point from UCONN last night.

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

The boys found a way to get a point and almost a second despite the fact their legs were starting to go away. Take it and move on to PC. They are playing with house money now and they want more.

Agreed, but PC carried the play most of the game after the 1st. End of the day they gave themselves another chance to beat a very quality opponent.

All teams go through tough weeks, so this is not an excuse, but traveling to Maine on Friday night, traveling back to CT for another game Sunday, then facing #13 Providence on Wednesday is a pretty tough week. To come away unbeaten is phenomenal.

Providence is a tough place to play and PC is likely to come out flying, UConn will have their work cut out for them. Would love to see them get to that .500 mark.

Why wasn't this played as a home and home this coming weekend?

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

No idea, scheduling conflict at XL? I really don't know.

Monster Jam is Saturday-Sunday. Perhaps there's a long setup time for them with all of the dirt and seat reconfiguring? Either way, just another reason an on-campus arena is a must. So dumb for the team to have to travel to Maine Friday, come home and play again Sunday, play again Wednesday, travel to play Saturday, then come back and play again next Tuesday for the makeup.

Scoreboard watching tonight, this stretch run is going to be interesting.

Re: UConn 2014-2015: Let the Hockey East Era Begin

Ah, yes, that old familiar feeling. Just as the Huskies get set to clear a barrier and take it to the next level, they throw in a stinker. They gotta forget it and get ready for Merrimack. A critical juncture has arrived.
