UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Because I didn't want Geof to have all the editorial fun:
http://uahhockey.com/blog/2014/03/17/more-blue-things-id-like-to-see-at-a-uah-game/

Not really controversial topics. I just want the home jerseys to have more blue than black, and more historical representation at the VBC.
Love the banners... points, borders and all!!! Back in the late Doug Ross era we tried to get this done. I've still got the drawings somewhere. The three club championships were on a single banner; CHA regular season and CHA championship banners were of the "add-the-year" type and no Doug Ross banner then of course. Also no NCAA appearance banner then either. I had over $2,000 committed to the project from fans and businesses but the powers-that-be cancelled it and even chastised our fund raising saying it would take away money from the departments fund raising efforts. The funny thing about that was that none of the fans or businesses I had commitments from were ever contacted by UAH!!! Kinda makes one wonder...

I also agree with the need for more blue in the home jerseys. I'd also like to see us go back to the white helmets that IS our history. We always stood out with them. Danton Cole introduced the black helmets which I think was part of his attempt to impart HIS mark on the teams direction/philosophy. It's time to go back to our long time traditions. Change doesn't have to ignore traditions. I also agree with Matt Parker's comments about going back to blue pants as a way to get more blue into our home uniforms. We did it for over 25 years and I, for one, would welcome those changes back.

Thanks, Doug! My mock-up is about as grandiose as it could get, and out of curiosity I'd like to know how much it would cost. (Anyone know?) I have no problem with combining banners or other cost-cutting measures. Heck, I'd be happy if they were bigger versions of the ones that hang at Spragins (again -- why are they in Spragins and not the VBC?). Just do something. And no red or any color but blue and white, because accent colors have changed, and they'll change again. Maybe y'all can talk it up at the banquet. ;)

(By the way, I would like to see fewer banners at Spragins, or at least some sort of organization. It's gotten rather bonkers hanging every sport's accomplishments in there -- and like hockey not all of basketball's honors are represented! But I digress...)

I'd love to see the return of white helmets and blue pants, if only at home (although I doubt we're ready for "home" and "road" helmets and pants).

I wish I could change my signature... :(

Now that Charger Park exists, the honors for each sport should be at the venue for those sports.

Johnny McCabe was fired at Finlandia. :(

Time and place? ...though most Mondays are for golf, other than that I'm pretty flexible.

How about we open this to everyone? This Friday, March 28th, noon at Cheddar's Cafe on University across from Walmart. Cheddar's is only okay, but it'll fit everyone's palate. [I'd rather go to Phil's or Ol' Heidelberg myself.] If people want to join us, that's cool. If not, I'll get to catch up with my favorite hockey rood roommate. ;)

Awww, crud re: John. :(

Aren't there sweet sets of banners for both baseball and softball and Charger Park? So they're redundant already. I'd take out baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, and tennis banners out of Spragins. Do what we must with hockey at the VBC. Hang the soccer and tennis banners at Charger Park and the tennis courts respectively. Combine the cross country and track banners into "add the year" groups -- they can still hang at Spragins since they don't have real homes. Reorganize the men's basketball, women's basketball, and volleyball banners at Spragins so that they're grouped by sport (and then chronologically, and for the basketball teams, add a couple for the NAIA accomplishments (we won a regional title and made the national championship game in each, after all). Easy peazy. Maybe I ought to mock Spragins up as well. :p

I haven't been to CP since the first night softball game. [Shhhhh, don't tell Les.] I'll swing by sometime this spring for a ball-and-bat sport and see what's up.

Do you need interior photos of SH? ;)

Works for me... and if no one else shows up Ol' Heidelberg is an easy move for us!

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Saw on UAHHockey.com on the commits list that there has been some shifting as to when guys are coming in. Cam Knight and Roberts Smits are now 2015-2016? Has this been confirmed? I like this move tremendously. Indicates less upheaval with the current players.

Max McHugh continues to have a **** fine season in the U Show. I do not know if UAH has even gotten a 20+ goal scorer from the USHL. Should slide into the top 6.

Also got to like Brandon Parker's numbers. Quite similar to Christian Folin at UMASS-Lowell in his last season in the NA. He's the top college FA according to most NHL teams so Parker's in good company.

If anyone has any news regarding players leaving I'd love to hear it. We have a great, young core up front coming back with Salhany, Prince, Brears, and Soquila. Hopefully well keep building on that core and players already in school will continue to develop.

Heisenberg list actually had Knight and Smits coming in 2015, and this has been confirmed.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Yeah, if you look at all of those 15-16 commitments, they all need a year of junior A to get ready.

Kestner's stats are wonky in EP: he went 40-30—70 in the GOJHL this year in I think 56GP. He's not "just" a local kid.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

4 wins in 10-11
2 wins in 11-12
1 win in 12-13 (Division I, that is)
2 wins in 13-14

I want to see a hell of a lot more than 4 wins next year. I would be very happy with an eight-win season. I haven't seen the home schedule, but the teams we played twice this year will be the ones we play four times next year, save BG, who are our designated rival. (I think that everyone in the league sees the sense that swapping UAH-BG and BSU-MSU makes, but we live with what we got. LSSU got Ferris.)

Soooo ...

  • BG 4x: they're a tough team, but we beat them. Figure one win.
  • FSU 4x: we might pick them off at home, but no way we'll win in Big Rapids just yet — 15-16 or 16-17, yeah! Anyway, figure one win.
  • LSSU 4x: new coach, figure we split.
  • Alaska 4x: they were hot at the end until they hit their rivals. I'd say that we stand a good shot of a home win, but you know that Westy will light a fire under them. He was not happy about not getting the job.
  • Tech 4x: Mel Pearson is going to be under pressure to win, but they retain a lot of firepower from a top-half team. Figure one win, hopefully at home. Pheonix Copley left early, so they'll be searching for an identity in net. They have talent there, though.
  • NMU 4x: the games in Marquette will be non-conference games. UAH played them decently well at home — that's a 3-2 game without that terrible turnover by Reider. Figure on a win in there somewhere — hopefully at home, because that will count in the league standings.
  • Anchorage 2x here in town: those were the first D-I points that we've picked up at home since 2011. Sigh. Anyhow, another year of development for the team probably sees us splitting or better.
  • Mankato 2x in MN: Dear Lord, send us good weather that weekend. Picking up points in Mankato would surprise me given their record this season. They lose Lehrke and McInnis, which are big losses to be sure, but they're going to be a **** good team next season with their speed, offensive skill, and goaltending. Stephon Williams could start for most everyone in the league, and Cole Huggins is flat-out amazing.
  • Bemidji 2x at the Sanford Center: beat 'em once up there, we can beat 'em again.

I haven't seen the full schedule. I'm surprised that the league schedule didn't get released at the Final 4ive. I've heard that ours is done, though. I am blanking on our NC foes. Maybe Michael remembers.

Anyhow, that would be ten wins, and I don't think that I'm being overly crazy in thinking that. Bemidji got ten league wins this year, so that would put us in the run for a playoff spot. I don't expect to make the playoffs next season, but this league likes to regress to the mean. The top two teams in the league are probably going to be the same next year, although I expect that Mankato will be better than Ferris. We're not going to be pulling wins from the top-half teams, but those bottom-half teams are beatable.

A year of conditioning on the freshmen, a shot in the arm of new scoring talent (looking at you, Kestner and McHugh), and a summer of R&R for Matt and Carmine. I like the puncher's chance we've got going. 15-16 is when we should be really good.

Believe in the Herd!

don't see the sense of swapping at all. all that does is increase travel, which we have enough of already.

anyway...we're with you on more wins for UAH. looking foward to the day when the WCHA is strong, top to bottom.

Tim O'Donnell of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner tweeted just now that Starzynski may de-commit from UAH for the Nanooks. :( But I guess that it's nice that someone wants kids that de-commit from us.
