UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

This topic is relevant to me, as I am laying out the Publishing Schedule for UAHHockey.com tonight, and I want to get all of the players. We will have three goalies, ten defensemen, and fifteen forwards. Where is Corbett going to find room for everyone in the locker room?!

Freshmen:

Joakim Broberg-LW
Brandon Carlson-LD
Brandon Clowes-LW
Brent Fletcher-RW
Carmine Guerriero-G
Matt Larose-G
Cody Marooney-RD
Steve McKenna-LW
Matt Salhany-RW
Wade Schools-D
Regan Soquila-F (played with Chad Brears in the BCHL) — I am not 100% sure that he is a 2013 recruit, but I'm going to go with yes.

Sophomores:

Chad Brears - F
Stephen Hickey - D
Jamie Kendra - F
Steven Koshey - D
Frank Misuraca - D
Jack Prince - F
Anderson White - D

Gruehl will not be back.

Juniors:

Craig Pierce - F
Doug Reid - F
Ben Reinhardt - D
Graeme Strukoff - D
Jeff Vanderlugt - F
Michael Webley - F

Kotlarz and Lysaght will not be back.

Seniors:

Alex Allan - F
Brice Geoffrion - F
C.J. Groh - G
Mat Hagen - D

Uusivirta will not be back.

Nice to see improved recruiting at UAH. I can't imagine what Cole or Lu has to go through, and Kurt started out in a hole after losing a couple key players after Portera's attempted slaughter of the program. Kleinendorst got it stabilized and now Corby is set up well to lead the program into a new era. It will take a little time, but I believe UAH can contend for a playoff berth within a couple years and for home ice in a couple more. Nice to see this program back on its feet!

Soquila is a 2013 recruit according to that article below. He's on campus.

Indeed he is, and the roster is live. http://www.uahchargers.com/roster.aspx?path=mhockey

Christian Costello missed everyone's radar that I saw. He gets Brice's old #5, as the big man now wears 57 in honor of the HOF Canadiens in his family tree. IIRC, Blake was wearing 57 in his last season in Montréal's organization. Danton did not like non-traditional numbers, and Lou stuck with that. I don't know what Kurt thought about such things, but clearly Mike is okay with it.

No other departures. 29-man roster — that's as big as I've ever seen us have.

Had a good conversation today with Dr. Altenkirch. I'm saving the results for an article on uahhockey.com to kick off our season, but my favorite was something along the lines of, "Let's face it: more people are going to come to a hockey or basketball game than are going to come to a high-end lecture on our campus."

There are 108 universities that are classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education. 17 of the 59 D-I hockey schools are on that list. One of the ten WCHA schools is on that list. Hint: I hold a degree from that one.

ETA: the others are BU, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Princeton, RPI, UConn, UMass, UMichigan, UMinn, Notre Dame, and Yale. That's good company.

FYI Assistant Coach Matty Thomas is out on the recruiting trail. He tweeted this yesterday.

The Syrians need to know better than to mess with Huntsville. Drones get developed here.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

So when are we going to hear about this interview with Ted Rotenberger? I am very interested to see how he was recruited and what went into his decision to actually stay in Huntsville. I hope that UAH can create a pipeline with the Thunder AAA program. It is by far the best in the Southeast and we could get some real gems if we can keep em at home.

Also, what is the word on the team? Has anyone seen a practice and have a report on how the players are looking (especially the freshmen)?

And last, but not least, any new news on the jersey situation? Have they finally decided and completed the new versions?

The only answer that I have for you is for the first, and that will be by the end of the month. Our interview with Dr. Altenkirch comes first.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Does anyone know any details on the new jerseys? I plan to still wear my old one to DU games, so when they are on TV, look over the visiting coaches right shoulder and you will usually see me (or my bonkers kids).

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

I do not. I have had pressing matters to attend to.

The new jerseys aren't in yet, but they will be soon. If you were at the postseason banquet, you saw a design that's 95% close. I expect that Douglas may have taken some photos. I did not.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Really enjoyed the weekend in the great state of Alabama. Catching up with some old Birmingham hockey buddies, some Tide football and a little Dreamland BBQ too. Looking forward to Huntsville in March!

Assuming I still live here then (you never know with the job hunt), we're going. :)

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

While skulking around the roster page, I saw that indeed we have a transfer:

http://uahchargers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=902&path=mhockey

Someone more versed in the NCAA rulebook than I am will tell me what his status is, given that he never took the ice for the Broncos. I'm guessing that he'll be able to play this year if they have him listed on the roster; whether that's fall or spring remains to be determined. MikeAnderson, do you have time to educate me?
