UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I imagine that you have all heard that Lasse Uusivirta decided to leave the country following his legal troubles.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Are the troubles still pending or are they closed?

The DA's office — and I think that it's the county DA given that UAH arrested him and not Huntsville — has said that they won't prosecute him in absentia as long as he stays out of the country. If he returns, they will return to the case.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

So, he left, and they don't want to pay to extradite him?

I don't think so.

As to the facts and allegations in the case, I'm not going to say anything. I think that it's fruitless to discuss the matter past his exiting the country.

The Dubuque Fighting Saints announced that defenseman Brandon Carlson has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey beginning next season at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

6-1 206#, 103 PIM, sweet beard, turns 21 in a month, California kid ... I think I've picked out my favorite freshman already.

Something about Monty's DFS and "favorite freshmen", as RPI had one the year before last in Curadi. This Friday is your recruit's game at Fargo. I believe Dubuque has a radio station that commonly travels to cover the USHL games, but cannot remember the call sign.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Brand new to the forum, looking to learn about UAH Hockey. Grew up in Atlanta, played with a number of guys on the team and follow the program's progress closely. Very excited to see this new incoming group of recruits. I was wondering if any of you guys knew more information on these guys other than what you get on Heisenberg's list and hockeydb.com. What are their expected roles coming in? Is there someone in the group who can supplant Lysaght's scoring? Going to miss him dearly. Thanks

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

The best source for your questions is the coaching staff, and they won't discuss the players until the entire class is complete. Past that, we're spitballing. That said, Coach Kurt Kleinendorst shuffled everything up so much last year that it's hard to know what the roles are outside of the nets, where it would seem that Gruehl is penciled in as the starter.

I haven't started trying to do any interviews of players or their junior coaches. I'm not sure that I'll have time to do that this summer.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Where's a good place to stay in Huntsville, while catching a series? Also looking for good food.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Dreamland BBQ

I knew that was coming.

The best places to stay by the rink are, in decreasing order of price and distance: Embassy Suites (connected to the VBC), Springhill Suites (behind the VBC), and the Holiday Inn (<0.5 mi walk). If you want craft beer + food, Below the Radar on Holmes Ave. downtown is a good spot. If you want my exhaustive list, I'll c&p from a message that I sent my brother the other day. He has the nerve to come to town when I'll be gone.

We stayed at the Embassy a few years back when Lowell made the trip to Huntsville. As you mentioned it's right next door to the VBC. The room price included a nice breakfast each morning and they also had a Manager's Social every night with drinks (mixed drinks too) and snacks. We would gather to have a drink before walking over to the VBC for the game. We also took advantage of their shuttle service which dropped us off at a local restaurant and picked us up when we were done. I thought the Embassy was great and the price wasn't bad either.

For what you get for it, it's really a good value. I haven't stayed there overnight myself, but I know several people who have and they've all had good things to say, and I've been in the hotel bar, too. ;)

If you really want to drop change, we have a Westin in the Bridge Street Towne Centre area, which isn't all that near downtown but is only 10-15 minutes away depending upon traffic.

Let me give you the best info I've got on getting into the game. Unless you are downtown, you're almost assuredly going to be staying along I-565 west of downtown. From I-565 EB, take Exit 19-A to go south on Memorial Parkway (US 231/431). Merge into the SB traffic coming from your near left, and then you'll merge into SB traffic coming from behind and above you. Come over one lane to the left, as the far-right lane merges and ends. Take Clinton Ave, which is a classic cloverleaf exit. Stay right and get on Clinton Avenue EB.

From there: If you want to park in the South Hall parking lot — closest to the rink, but you have to walk around to get to the front. If you want to park in the main deck and cross Monroe, turn right on Monroe. Either way, parking is $5. You really should stay downtown and walk, as your parking will be free, but if you're going cheapest, then that's how you want to go.

One of the least-expensive good hotels (based on online ratings and customers who've stayed there) is the Candlewood Suites off of Old Madison Pike. Most Huntsvillians probably don't even know that it's there.

In today's day and age, at least based upon the experiences I have had with watching recruits for my team, the best way to get an idea of roles is to watch them play junior hockey. You might even be able to pick up hints from a radio broadcast. With streaming A/V, this is much easier today than has ever been in the past. Obviously any different team will present a different environment, but you can certainly use juniors to assess strengths. How is the puck handling? Skating? Defending positioning? Ice vision? Faceoffs (if applicable)? There's no guarantee that what you see is what you get, but it'll give you a better idea.
