UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I used to tell Doug Ross critics that UAH would be lucky to ever see .500 hockey again if he left the program. This is the first time in these many years that I'm truly optimistic that we might actually be able to break that barrier again (in maybe as little as two years). Where I always tried to explain Doug's dependency on emotion (and resulting penalties) to win games, I now believe that talent can be used. If Kurt, Bruce, and Gavin can't recruit the talent needed, nobody can.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Only three sets of games after the holidays, hope they can fill in some exhibitions. And with so few home games, hope the fans come out and keep some of the momentum going

I thought that I'd re-visit the topic, but this was a good quote very early on. :) Prescient, even.

The following comment is not an indictment of Kurt nor a praise of Doug Ross. It's just one of our favorite quotes. When we first met Doug after he had been at UAH a year or so, he commented during the course of the conversation "My job is simple, just keep kids out of jail and win hockey games."

It is a legitimate news story.

Sigh...

OK, back to Hockey. Any word on school presence for next seasons slate of home matches? I like the idea someone tossed out (way back) about having the homecoming focus back on Hockey. Personally I did not and do not care about such things but it does help blend the student body into the matches at the VBCC. Having the homecoming court on the ice helps bring all the greek groups. And Blue, can he show up to all (almost all) games? Is there a conflict with Basketball when there is a Hockey match and a BB game on the same night? Could they not simply have two Blues? The Pep Band regularly shows at Hockey matches, so that is good. Shout out to the Pep Band!

Looking forward to a honest season schedule next season.

That quote is applicable at all levels midgets thru college, and most other sports too.

In happier news, Coach Kleinendorst says that Kyle Lysaght is doing better. KK is on Twitter now: @Kleinendorst_K. I guess we're going to have to get a Twitter badge going on him for UAHHockey.com.

They're quoting it as WAFF.com Staff over there, so it's a wire, but not AP. Wouldn't they have put it out quoting WAFF with an AP byline?

Hawaii News Now (KHNL/KGMB) and WAFF are both of Raycom Media Stations. They apparently pool their stories online.

Ahhhhhh. I just checked WDAM (my brother has been a producer there since 1996), and they don't have it, but then I'm not sure that people in Covington County know what the hell hockey is. It's not far from all the Gulf Coast teams, but there's a line about 15 miles north of the coastline where everything sorta changes. And if it did show up on WDAM today, my brother probably pulled it off of there for me.

We know what dates UAH can request the Gulf South Conference to schedule league basketball home games. Hopefully we'll have as few conflicts as possible.

It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) that hockey schedules have been set in stone after basketball schedules for the last few years as we've struggled to get games. I don't know that we beat hoops this year, but I'm betting that we did.

As far as dates go, it's just as much avoiding interference as it is stretching a small staff. You cut SID in half; Taylor Flatt does our hockey PA when there's no conflict, but if there is, he's at basketball. The ops staff also gets spread out: you only have one Brian Massey, and he's great at the VBC and Spragins. (Disclosure: I really like Brian.) Dr. Brophy is doing the best that he can to fund-raise for more support staff in the department, but it's a tough row to hoe.

But my sense is that we're getting better across the board. Charger Park is great and getting better bit-by-bit; if you enjoy the stick-and-ball sports, you should go check it out. Basketball is honestly ascendant on both programs.

Hope to see some of you on Friday at the hockey banquet.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Just had the thought: UAH should retired Jared Ross's #7 in 2015, a decade after his career ended. Is there any doubt that he's the best player to date? Hometown kid, son of the long-time coach ... seems like a no-brainer to me.

I talked to a number of people about Kyle Lysaght's injuries at the banquet on Friday night. I won't characterize them, but everything that I've heard is that he's making good progress. I'm going to go over sometime next month and visit him. Hearing what Dr. Brophy and Coach Kleinendorst said, it's very unlikely that Kyle will ever play hockey again. But do you know what he will do? He'll graduate, and he'll go on to a good career, and we'll have been lucky to had him. I have enjoyed getting to know him over the last two years.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Gosh you must be related to Malcolm Portera because you talk just like he did, about the hockey program. I love
UAH hockey and could care less about sitting on hard bleachers watching college basketball, loved it when it was played in the VBC! True the 5000 was on a free hockey night, but the majority of those people paid $5.00 to park and spent upwards of $20 for snacks at the game. I've been a 2 seat season ticket holder for 15 years and enjoyed the game since its beginnings at UAH in 1979, when all the players were from Huntsville! Get off your high horse, there young person, because you don't have a clue about whatdrives UAH hockey in Huntsville and by the way it looks YOU NEVER WILL!!!!!! If you'll note, that poster moderated his position as the topic evolved. That's a good sign.
