It wouldn't work.

However, I just don't see the nWCHA doing anything different with the playoff format. Just because many of the teams are different, doesn't mean they should change what has been a very successful system.

Also, I believe that common sense will prevail, and they will dump that silly Alaska playing Alaska Anchorage rule.

It's been a successful system largely due to the inclusion of Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, UMD and St. Cloud. None of those schools and their fan bases, all within a reasonable drive of the Cities is now involved. What kind of draw do you think a Ferris State-Alaska 5th seed vs 4th seed game will put in the Xcel? How about Mankato and Bowling Green in Grand Rapids? Why do you think the CCHA abandoned the third night of their tourney?

The Final Five format, first the top five teams in a 10 team WCHA with a play in game on Thursday, and then Top Six, with 2 Thursday, Two Friday and one Saturday worked because of the presence of a lot of "local" schools. I don't forsee thousands driving from Bemidji or Mankato to Grand Rapids or from Huntsville or Bowling Green to St Paul. The CCHA Tourney at the Joe was also located with 9 of 11 schools within a 5 hour drive of the Joe and only Alaska requiring flight. The Old WCHA had 7 of the 12 within a five hour drive, plus Tech and UNO only a couple hours longer. Only Alaska-Anchorage, Denver and CC are flight necessary. Now compare the New WCHA, 2 schools within a five hour drive of St Paul and maybe 3 more still within a day's drive. Three within five hours of Grand Rapids. And none of these schools have the numbers in their fan base that Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Michigan or Michigan State do. You may have the same WCHA brand. But it's a whole different animal that bears little, if any resemblance to its predecessor.

It'll have 5 CCHA schools, 3 WCHA schools, and 2 CHA schools. ;)

"Individual schools have received a list of schools they'll play at home and on the road, although the schools don't have the dates for those games. The schedule had to be redone after Alabama-Huntsville was approved as the league's 10th member last month.
The league also has developed scheduling partners. Teams will play their partner four times each season (two home, two away). Teams will play five opponents four times each, and four opponents twice each for the 28 games.
The partners are: BG-Huntsville, Lake Superior-Ferris State, Northern Michigan-Michigan Tech, and Minnesota State (Mankato)-Bemidji State, and the Alaska schools."

The scheduling partners are logical. I would tink this means we play BGSU four times every year, and among the remaining eight opponents, we play four teams four times one season, and the other four teams four times the next.

FTR, we love you guys. You were on our side in the CCHA bid, you were on our side this time, and you're within a daylight drive. Also, I grew up in Beavercreek. What's not for me to love?

We'll probably be the laggard on that as we scramble to slot teams where we'd done 2-for-1, 3-for-1, or more. We also have to try to bring Nic Dowd and SCSU in if at all possible.

Our beat writer was asked about the schedule last week and unless something has changed, SCSU is still coming down.

By the way, we actually play hockey this weekend. You would be forgiven to forget that we play Division I games at this school. Our weekend trip to Duluth will constitute our last games for seven months.

On the upside, there will be quite a few teams joining you in the next couple weeks.

And, after the hiatus, you have an honest to God Division I league to be a part of!

I always publicly believed that we'd get in, but there was a 2-3 month period when I thought that we were done.
