UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

My understanding is that they agreed upon the formula to use to determine what should be paid - the difference between going to UAH and thier longest/most expensive trip excluding Alaska/UAH - but they won't know the actual $$ amount until the schools finalize thier travel arrangements. With the schedule being changed to include UAH for 12/13, many of those exisiting arrangements on hold/pending change.

That is my understanding as well. It may be unsettled to the fact of know how much it is going to cost for budget purposes. But they did say if they can get 5000 fans a night, the travel subsidy won't be an issue.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I don't know who shot this, but someone needs to teach them how to film something like this. It's under-exposed and the room audio is terrible.

18 home games next season is going to be really, really nice. Big thanks to GFM and everyone who rallied the troops to save UAH hockey.

I'd rather this over no info. ;)

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I expect that they are the "unnamed national power". I did confirm that it wasn't Denver. -GFM
Well we already knew that - Denver is not a "national power" (only in their own minds), they are just in a "national" (regional) conference.

I would think regardless of what the travel subsidy is, it works out to be a win for UAH. Paying some small part of another teams bill to play at UAH can't be anywhere near what they were paying to take their team on the road. I'm guessing UAH will eliminate 6-7 road trips compared to this year. Even if the stands are completely empty, wouldn't they still be saving money for their program (and the bonus of being in the premier D-I hockey conference), no?

If we get 3000 fans on average to our home games, we'll probably cover the subsidy.

Nice press conference. Interesting that they voted to admit UAH without the amount of the travel payment being ironed out.

It's impossible to put a dollar value in it today. I've seen plane fares from Marquette to Huntville vary from $460 to over $600 in the past couple weeks.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I've just now taken a close look at the map of the new WCHA. After doing so, I have an even greater appreciation for their vote to let us into the club. It would have been hard to sell me on the idea if I had been one of the non-AK seven. Thank you WCHA presidents.

Now, maybe we can help orchestrate bringing Niagara and Robert Morris into the WCHA. Doing so and creating north (BSU, MTU, NMU, LSSU, MSU, & UA-F) and south (FSU, BGSU, NU, RMU, UAH, & UA-A) divisions could possibly make economic sense to the conference.

This discussion would be best in the WCHA2 thread, but I would guess that the AD's and Presidents of those schools are in a wait and see mode to make sure the retooled WCHA isn't just thenegotiating third coming of thethe MAAC Conference.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

So I listened online to parts the UAH Press Conference regarding the WCHA.

Next year, they will have 18 home games. 14 WCHA games, 2 non-conf games (which they said would be a big name but couldn't name yet), and then 2 against the Under 18 team.

Travel subsidy is being worked on. It would be structured along the same lines as the Alaska schools, which I have heard is take your most expensive non-Alaska/UAH conference trip and the team will pay the difference. So if it costs BSU $10,000 to get to Bowling Green, $12,000 to get to UAH, BSU would get a $2,000 check.

The conference schedule will consist of playing five teams four times and four teams two times for a total of 28 games.

Nothing can be done about next year, but in the following years, UAH will try to avoid home contests on Alabama-Auburn football weekend (and maybe Alabama-LSU, I can't recall). But it may be difficult as there are only 20 weekends to play hockey, and seven of those are conference home weekends. If they want to get other teams to Huntsville, it may be unavoidable.

That is my brief recap! Someone from UAH can correct me if I am wrong on anything. :D
Heard an interview with Bruce McLeod between periods of the BG-LSSU game tonight. Apparently the issue of how firm an nWCHA schedule can be set up for UAH next season is still up in the air. While all the nWCHA schools are firmly in support of UAH being in the nWCHA, they are having problems trying to adjust their schedules which were previously established. Nothing firm was said, but there was talk of the possibility of the other schools not being able to accommodate UAH with a full nWCHA schedule next season.

I'm OK with it if we have to do the "Mankato rule" (partial schedule, seeded 10th no matter what in the conference tournament), that's fine. That's still a lot better than the schedules we've had the past three years. It's not like we're going to start tearing up the league next season anyway. I'm appreciative of the effort to get us as many games as possible.

It's possible that the league tourney will only have 8 of 10 schools participate. One weekend of playoffs at the home rinks of seeds #1-4 and then a league Final Four at the selected arena, likely to be Grand Rapids in 2014.

Is it possible that you got that from a source you can't name? ;)

GFM <-- thinks the FF shouldn't be carried forward.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

So, if ninth and tenth place don't make the playoffs, are we calling that the BGSU/NMU rule? ;)

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

If true about 9 and 10 not making the tournament, I am jealous of the nWCHA. Never thought I'd write that.

I say Grand Rapids because that city and St Paul are the two most often mentioned tourney cities, along with Green Bay. GB is unavailable the next two years and St Paul has the Big 6-10-12-14 Tourney next year. As far as only 8 of 10, the three week CCHA playoff model has not been good for the CCHA, with the first weekend falling on Spring Break for most schools. And while a 3 night Tournament has been successful for the Old WCHA, it didn't work in the CCHA and they eventually dropped it. In the past you never had one league arranging last minute transport for 25-30 people to/from 2 Alaskas and Huntsville. That's a lot of last minutes $1200 planes tickets. Fiscally, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Financially and ligistically. a compact one weekend of campus sites plus a two night tourney makes sense.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

So with UAH in the fold, does the previously proposed automatic UAA vs UAF playoff matchup go by the wayside? If only 8 teams qualify for the playoffs, I can't see how it would work fairly.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I suppose I should have posted the previous question in the nWCHA thread. Oh well.

Welcome to the nWCHA, UAH!!!
