UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Congrats to UAH.

remarkable restraint for what? We knew the vote would be today, thats all he's saying.
Congrats to UAH, I'm excited for my first "roadtrip" to Huntsville!
Yoopers in Alabama. That sounds fun. I'm thinking the next invasion type trip should be Tech at UAH.

It would be interesting to be sure.....

Aside from the accent, is there any difference? :p:D
Ummm..... Yoopers don't all freak out if they see a snowflake. In Alabama, they all run to the grocery store to stock up for a week. ;)

Do we know the scheduling formula for next season? I'm curious about the OOCs and where the nWCHA will find them?

I would think 28 league games, and 6-10 NC games (8-10 for all the non-Alaska schools since pretty much everyone's guaranteed a trip to The Final Frontier, possibly two since I'd assume they would be in the same pairing, and 6 for the Alaska schools). I wonder if, with the advent of the nWCHA, we will see a third Alaska tournament (possibly at a "neutral site" in Juneau), or just regular home series? Obviously the Alaska teams aren't going to travel for a NC game, since I'm sure everyone would like those extra two games.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I'd say welcome, but the nWCHA doesn't really exist yet. Still....I'm very pleased that a lot of kids from northern Michigan and MN will get to go to Alabama in the middle of the winter.
Not sure if the kids in AL feel the same way about coming up north.

They've had to do it before; I doubt anything's changed.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

The vote was unanimous

Thanks for the info. That is quite surprising after all that we have heard for months. I suppose that it might have been going to be 7-2 or 8-1, but the others decided to go along for league solidarity and not to incur UAH's wrath for future games.

The subsidy probably pushed it over the top.

I think it speaks more to the work the UAH staff (Drs Altenkirch and Brophy) did in their individual conversations with thier counterparts at the member schools leading up to the official group presentation than anything else. Obviously in those conversations they had set the foundation for what value UAH brought to the table and they had a clear idea of what each school's concerns were. They were then able to go back and assemble a proposal (fairly comprehensive from what I hear) that addressed those concerns and drive home what UAH brought to the league, satisfying whatever issues/questions the voters had.

A little bit on the travel subsidy:

WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod said UAH will be paying a similar subsidy to what was worked out for both UAF and UAA recently, which he said is less complicated for the other seven schools and more fair for the three outlying universities.

"All we're trying to do ... is not have it cost anymore than the highest cost trip for anyone in the lower 48," McLeod said.

"Rather than buying X-number of tickets and giving you this and giving you that, we agreed on a firm number and that's the check that Alaska will write to the visiting schools. It's a different approach than in the past, but I think it's much, much more fair and what we're going to do is apply that same formula to Huntsville."

Meaning if Bowling Green State is the most expensive trip for Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech University, then neither would pay more than that sum to visit Huntsville, Ala., Fairbanks, Alaska, and Anchorage, Alaska.

"We used the same premise and we used the same model and came up with a number everyone was pleased with," UAH athletic director E. J. Brophy said from the convention in Dallas.

"The number is an attractive number. It was unanimously agreed upon, a range. Everybody was very happy with that number and that got us over the hurdle. From then on, it was smooth sailing."
