UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

May not want to play that next season, if these kids transfer to other schools. Could open back up the wounds.

I disagree, I think that's perfect. I was in my second week of college when 9/11 happened. That day as I was walking back to my dorm I heard a song being played, SCSU will play tunes of songs from a tower, we'd call it "The Bells." The song that was playing was "New York, New York." I thought that was such a ray of sunshine in an otherwise horrid day, and if it wasn't "too much" for then, I don't see why it'd be "too much" for this.

The death of southern NCAA hockey isn't worth a moment?

Its worth something, but I don't like the word "death" thrown around easily. Fact is as much as this sucks, everyone will wake up tomorrow from the situation alive. Even Morris.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I'm going into USCHO hibernation. I don't want to talk about this anymore. I don't know that I'll ever be able to really care about college hockey anymore. It would be like getting dumped by your fiancée and then ending up in a ballroom with every girl you've ever dated or even crushed on.

Believe me when I say I know exactly how you feel. After Notre Dame dumped their program, I refused to have anything to do with Notre Dame, openly rooting against them, or anything hockey. I went away to college (Michigan State, no less, when they won their 2nd NC), but still refused to give hockey a chance. Then by my senior year, I wondered about college hockey, entered the lottery for student tickets and got my notification. I did not get a ticket, but I opened the door to my first love. After graduating, I started going to Notre Dame's D1-independent games and got hooked hard again, and am glad I was open to reigniting that flame.

I'm not saying anything like Notre Dame's good fortune will befall UAH, but take some time to grieve your sport and when you're ready to root again, you will.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

As a Colgate alum and huge fan let me express my sincerest condolences for this recent decision...my guess (from experience) is that administrative cowardice is a major contributing factor...a great program, started by a Michigan legend, goes to "club" status...why??? I even hate to ask...all of the fans of UA-Huntsville hockey deserve a lot better...

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

So sorry to hear this. It seems unnecessary and petty. Good people. Good memories of Huntsville.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I'll just cut and paste my thought from the Save UAH Hockey! Facebook group...

This is an awful day for college hockey. This Spartan sends his absolute best wishes to the UAH fanbase and former Spartan hockey players Chris Luongo and Danton Cole. Lots of MSU connections with UAH. Actually, in general, lots of Ron Mason connections with UAH.

Doug Ross was a fantastic coach and one of college hockey's best ambassadors. It's extremely unfortunate that his 25 years of hard work must end like this.

And I'll add this: The UAH SIDs are some of the easiest people to work with ever. I did play-by-play for a UAH v. MSU game last year, and they were extremely nice folks.

You say "Death of southern NCAA hockey" as if there was some grand tradition of southern NCAA hockey that has been slowly dying out, and UAH was the last vestige of it.

I don't recall very many moments of silence for Iona or Fairfield.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I agree it sucks, I wish they could have made things work, but a moment of silence? Doesn't that kinda diminish the moment for moments of silence for people who've died instead of kids who now can either no longer play hockey at their school or have to transfer schools?

Well said.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I'm not sure what to think of the notion that UAH didn't pursue a conference during this realignm...I mean, greedy moneygrab, but if they didn't get support from the WCHA through this, I am very dissappointed with the schools that I root for.

From my guestimation, where UAH comes into it is if the WCHA goes beyond 12. But if the membership stays at 12 (or under), that's a much more difficult situation for UAH.

That's from Bruce McLeod. I don't know how much UAH wanted to do, but there's not much they actually could have done when they were lower on the priority list than a Buffalo team that may or may not ever exist.

What does Buffalo have to do with the WCHA? That was BGSU...yes I remember that quote from Bruce McLeod but I don't really think it matters since UAH never even attempted to join during all the fallout. Portera wanted the hockey team gone yet can easily justify spending more on Saban than probably the entire UAH Hockey budget...

And they're all gone now. They saw the writing on the wall and wanted nothing to do with the hit piece that was about to go down.

Jamie Gilliam is now at Lipscomb, Antoine Bell works in the SWAC office and Nathan Looney (if you dealt with him) is at Harding.

I don't recall very many moments of silence for Iona or Fairfield.

Last I remember, both Iona and Fairfield came from traditional ice hockey areas, at least geographically speaking. Not to mention, I don't remember either of them unexpectedly winning a national championship at the NCAA level (let alone two), nor being the last NCAA hockey team to go undefeated in a season. I moved to Huntsville in 1980 and started watching them at that point grow from a regional power to a national power in the club ranks, and then struggling, but pulling it off, in terms of success at the NAIA, then lower NCAA ranks, all the way to Division I, against a great many odds. So, in terms of Huntsville, at least, yes there is a grand tradition... the surge of pride when one would hear the first notes of "Sweet Home Alabama" as the players came to the ice is one of my favorite memories, at least. Their prowess in Division I was, to be honest, far more impressive than Iona or Fairfield, too, not to mention entirely unexpected primarily due to its "southern" location. A move back to club hockey is just stupid in my opinion, but this just goes to show that out-of-place "traditions" just don't cut it in the current economic climate. This is a very sad day, particularly for us Charger fans, but also for the college hockey world in general. The little team that could just couldn't fight the powers that be both internally and externally. I hate it that any teams have disbanded over the years, but UAH was a unique and special program. And yes, more so than Iona, Fairfield, Findlay, UIC, Wayne State, etc., for numerous reasons.

WHO WILL MISS HUNTSVILLE?
WE WILL MISS HUNTSVILLE!

RIP, guys. :(

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

UAH didn't bid this summer because Portera told them not to do so. I can't prove it to you but it's obvious that's what happened.

GFM <-- "That said, if I get over it, I'm gonna be a Terrier. Methodists represent."

Geoff

I don't blame you one bit for "going into hibernation." This has to rip your heart out after all that you have done for the program and in trying to save it.

I'm truly disgusted with the decision of Portera that flies in the face of the efforts of you and everyone else involved with the Save the Chargers movement.

I wasn't in State College back in the day, but Penn State and the Chargers had some epic battles at the club level.

Better days for the Chargers:

I don't even know what to say...

I know the gut-wrenching feeling just from the tension of almost losing my beloved Penguins just a few short years ago. I can't imagine how I'd feel if the schools that given me degrees (Penn State and Robert Morris) were to suddenly pull the plug on the sport so near and dear to my heart.

I remember UAH's first trip to the Island... the Pep Band making the trip, helping Doug with directions... it's hard to believe that it's just.... gone.

My deepest sympathies, guys. Honestly. The school, the fans, and especially the players deserved better than this.

Never a good thing for a college hockey program to disband regardless of the location. As a fan of the game in general, the more programs, rinks, and teams there are the better, whether its in Maine, Minnesota, or Alabama.
My hopes are that the folks associated with the program have brighter days ahead.
