UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

We play in printed jerseys, as do most schools. The only sewn-on bits are the nameplates on the back. I bet you'd also get into NCAA trouble for this, but playing in their practice jerseys for the final exhibitions would be interesting [if highly unlikely].

The boys have each other to play for.

GFM

Even better. Just have a bonfire outside the arena and play in numbered pennies.

The only rules regarding jerseys from an NCAA standpoint are that they a) must be uniform and b) may display no more than one maker's mark no larger than 2.25" square.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Sad Thing to hear. My regrets to the UAH Hockey community, past and present.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I'm not sure if this was pointed out, but the thought that UAH could bring in the same caliber of players they had 28-30 years ago into a club setting is preposterous. The bigger schools in the South are more attractive now, I would expect, and the possibility of finding a conference (the SEC? really? No chance UAH will be allowed into that fraternity, Portera) even at club level to permit a "robust" program is just not possible (in my opinion). The support for the program was due to its growth from the grassroots of club to Division I. Now, if there is a program, it will be relegated to games at Wilcoxon (I would assume), with far less support than it has ever had. This was not a dollars and cents issue; this was a football (and to a lesser extent basketball and softball) issue. My heart goes out to the guys and the hockey alumni, and, of course, all of the supporters who were there through thick and thin these last 30+ years. Gutless, insincere, and mean... of course, if the CCHA hadn't shown the same qualities a few years ago, I strongly doubt this would have happened. The greater support from the college hockey community, the more support from the school and more fans would have showed up, too. As it is, with low attendance numbers here, it made it that much easier for this to happen. I guess the label "Hockey Capital of the South" will be a long past memory... Who hates Portera? Huntsville hates Portera! Feh.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

True...

...However, what days were these, exactly? Since I've been following this great sport of ours, I've seen quite the handful of teams close up shop and have heard virtually no stories of other programs reaching out to save any of them. Are there any current programs that have been actively "saved" by others?
And besides, it sounds to me like it would not have mattered if the CCHA had taken UAH a couple years ago, or if all 6 of the newly aligned conferences had invited them to join in a unilateral effort to save the program. It sounds like they were going to be chopped by this d-bag regardless. I think it has been stated here earlier, but there is no evidence of UAH pursuing a new home during the realignment. So, consequently, there is no proof that they were being "shut out" of the conferences.

Still very sad, though.
I too hope that they do something to recognize the program on the biggest stage we've got in Tampa this April. It would be a nice bit of closure, so to speak.

There's a bigger push to try to save this program because it involves a college hockey footprint with a radius of, just guessing, about 500 miles. Pretty much the entire "deep south" of this country. It's not like Toledo (which has Bowling Green) or Detroit (which has big blue).

Bull**** Detroilet has me. I want nothing to do with that ****hole.

I'm not sure what to think of the notion that UAH didn't pursue a conference during this realignm...I mean, greedy moneygrab, but if they didn't get support from the WCHA through this, I am very dissappointed with the schools that I root for.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I read the quote think it was talking about hockey and cringed at the score. Then I clicked the link and cringed slightly less.
Back in the day when Penn had it's plug pulled, the players took the ice with a strip of white material over the PENN.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

UAH should take the ice wearing Crimson Tide football jerseys for the rest of the year. After all, that's where the windfall of savings from cutting the program will be going.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Sorry guys. This stinks. As an ex-fan of BU football I know what it's like to lose a program you're passionate about. Hopefully it regains varsity status soon.

Good Luck.

Oops. In this case I meant the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, not the user. :o

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

One thing that was suggested on the RPI thread is that teams who have given UAH a good number of games (like last year when RPI gave them 4 games including 2 at home) should observe a moment of silence in memory of this team.

UAH didn't bid this summer because Portera told them not to do so. I can't prove it to you but it's obvious that's what happened.

I'm going into USCHO hibernation. I don't want to talk about this anymore. I don't know that I'll ever be able to really care about college hockey anymore. It would be like getting dumped by your fiancée and then ending up in a ballroom with every girl you've ever dated or even crushed on.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

UAH Hockey News Release
"We also believe this provides tremendous opportunities for the up-and-coming young hockey players in North Alabama,” Portera explained. “None of the players on our 24-man roster are from Alabama, but there is a very good possibility that will change by reverting the team into a club league."
Now that's not a quote that I expected to hear in relation to this story.

I'm very sorry to see the Chargers go. I wish that there was more that I could have done.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Sorry UAH guys. The Chargers will definitely be missed ... and well beyond next year. I remember some interesting UAH-RIT games over these many years (some good ... some just interesting!) Take care.

I agree it sucks, I wish they could have made things work, but a moment of silence? Doesn't that kinda diminish the moment for moments of silence for people who've died instead of kids who now can either no longer play hockey at their school or have to transfer schools?

The death of southern NCAA hockey isn't worth a moment?

Perhaps pep bands could play "Sweet Home Alabama"....

May not want to play that next season, if these kids transfer to other schools. Could open back up the wounds.
