UAA recruits

Re: UAA recruits

Well if the report is anything to go by we may be looking at the final seasons of UAA hockey. :(

Re: UAA recruits

I read those slides, and I can tell you that I know those feelings and hope that you get the same kind of outcome that UAH did.

Well I submitted my input in support of UAA/UAF Athletics and the UAA Hockey program. So, we will see what the decision is.

Re: UAA recruits

I've been thinking the same thing. Hope we are wrong.

It is what it is. ..... I would rather get chopped instead being the only one left up here in the lovin o'l WCHA especially D'Banks as they will be bled to near death before they are banished in just a few by the teams that needed them then, but will be chopped liver at the first chance they get. And the new Jack Rabbit Busline Hockey league will be formed above the Mason Dixon line.

I don’t like either but. ……it is what it is

Suze Time to drop a dime and remind the Fat guy, the leader of 5,000 that have 10,000 parents, and the 1/2 doz. They all said they where "Saving Seawolf Hockey".

It's all on them if it goes away.

It's all on the people who voted in republican majority after republican majority for the last 40 effing years.

Unless and until someone that matters stands up and challenges the ridiculous notion that the permanent fund is untouchable then the entire state deserves what it gets because that's what they effing voted for. The citizens of Alaska wanted this total BS called "fiscal conservatism" and now they're gonna get what they voted for ...

FIFITY FOUR BILLION DOLLARS today ... and in 2025 (just nine years from now) the fund is projected to be worth SEVENTY FOUR BILLION DOLLARS.

All this over some effing arbitrary number that some political d-bag pulled out of his arse? Who is it that decided 50 million had to be cut from college athletics? It's BS made up nonsnese when you've got $54 Billion at your disposal.

Re: UAA recruits

A small fraction of the interest on that 54 Billion fund would be enough to not have to cut school athletic budgets.

Re: UAA recruits

I will admit that I am completely ignorant with respect to the $54 billion fund, other than it is apparently financed by oil revenues, intended as some sort of "rainy day" protection, and results in an annual cash dividend to Alaska residents.

For those of us in the lower 48 who probably don't know more than I do on that issue, is there a dispassionate explanation as to why the money can't or won't be spent by the state on general fund types of obligations like funding its colleges and universities? I assume there is some sort of political angle to it, but are there also legal restrictions? Is it some sort of fear that if the piggy bank is cracked open, then suddenly it will just be raided until it runs dry?

I understand that low oil prices have really hurt Alaska's revenues, as they have in North Dakota. But even a modest investment return on $54 billion is a chunk of change in a state with less than a million people.

The 2025 Permanent Fund is projected to be worth 74 billion. A current growth rate of about 2 billion dollars a year. Yet, the twats in Juneau refuse to consider utilizing that income and instead the entire profits from the Fund are plowed back into the Fund. It's a right-wing fiscal-conservative circle-jerk of epic proportions. There are mechanisms built into the system to put those funds into the budget but the political will to do so doesn't exist.

The "Understanding Alaska's Budget" website (http://www.alaskabudget.com/savings/) states there is 61 billion in the PFD account!!

Blitz the problem is only a small fraction of the residents are not on some kind of full time government free money "Program or Grant" and their Battle cry is "don't cut my free ****".

http://www.apfc.org/home/Content/home/index.cfm is the Permanent Fund's website ... 54 billion in value ...

Your link adds the constitutional reserve account and points to other accounts as well ... it's more accurate to say they have 61 billion available than 54.

If I were to spend $100,000 a day ... it would take me 1670 years to spend 61 billion. Unless my math is totally hosed ...

Anyway, they ain't touching any of that dough.

The problem is that the Permanent Fund is preserved in our Constitution and it takes a vote of the people to take any money from it. Based on the feedback I've read at AK Dispatch online, most think the athletics are a waste of money. I doubt any vote to use the money for collegiate athletics would pass.

Yeah, given the reactions I've seen its gonna take a rather sizable silent majority to suddenly rise up on this and speak out. Given what happened in the primaries I wouldn't expect much political support either.

Re: UAA recruits

Congrats to Kurt's son, Daniel Haider (and Seawolf to be) for scoring the game winning goal for the Ice Dogs with 6 seconds left! He also had an assist in the game. :)

While looking at the Ice Dogs roster, I was shocked to see the UAA recruit, Julius Marva, has played 3 games for them. He is still listed on the UAA roster. What the heck? He turns 21 in January. He won't be able to play juniors after he turns 21, correct?

None of the four Finnish players have pictures on UAA's roster page while every other incoming fresman does. That explains Marva ... Maybe the other 3 Finn's are just allergic to photography?
