UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

Long time lurker, first time poster… Don’t be surprised if I never post again, either…I really have no interest in joining the inevitable decent to insulting each other that happens in each thread. I just have a few things that I need to say.

Full disclosure: I’m an avid college hockey fan and an avid Seawolf hockey fan. I am a UAA alumnus. I have only missed a handful of their home games in the last 25 years. It’s kinda like being a Cubs fan, but at least we have had some glory days in my lifetime.

I’m tired of hearing how we got screwed by the officials. Every team gets screwed by the officials every week. The officials are human – they make mistakes – get over it. All those knowledgeable about the hockey gods know that you earn your bounces. Yes, I hate bad calls, but they happen and will continue to happen. I just don’t believe there is a conspiracy to screw UAA or any other team. We aren’t earning our bounces at the moment.

The hit along the boards by Currier late in the Minny game tonight was a clear penalty, under the current enforcement of the rules. Bad decision on Currier’s part. He’s a good player, but he made a mistake. Two minutes or five minutes may be debatable, but it was an UNNECESSARY penalty either way. It happened in neutral ice with a teammate covering the opposing player and the game on the line. No need for the hit at all… It cost us the game, period. A MUCH NEEDED, morale boosting game. When the hit happened, I hit the FF button on the DVR, ‘cuz I knew it was game over. Once again, the Woofies snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

This Seawolf team continues to play below their potential – they exhibit moments of greatness, preceded and followed by horrible streaks of play. 12 SOG in a whole game against Wisconsin followed by 12 SOG in the first period against Minny, as an example. Horribly inconsistent. The home games have been pretty dismal this year. The one league game we did win was a hang-on-and-hope affair after taking a 3 goal lead the night after giving up a 3 goal lead…

Yea, I know , we got no fans… The Aces stole them, blah, blah, blah. There are over 300,000 people in the local area and we can’t compete with the Aces and fill a 6000 seat arena when we don’t even play on the same nights??? Play hard and WIN SOME GAMES!!! There are enough people in the area to support both teams, even if there were two separate arenas, should THAT ever happen.

We need a new coach, a new athletic director and wholesale changes to the athletic department. McDiffet, too. – he’s been here too friggin’ long with no constructive input. Our southern boy AD Cobb won’t even let people bring SIGNS into the Sullivan Arena to inspire the team, let alone encourage actual STUDENT attendance. To be in a situation where we are constructing a brand new, on-campus arena WITHOUT AN ICE SHEET for the sole Div I team at the University is asinine. I have been a regular financial contributor to UAA and am now withholding my future alumnus contributions to the University for these reasons – they will know why.

One more thing - Get a life, people! Quit insulting each other! We all love college hockey or we wouldn’t be here… lurking OR posting. Constantly insulting those that offer a differing opinion only dilutes your message (Donald, you listening? Mellow out, dude). You catch more flies with honey than horses**t, as my mom still says…

That is all…
Well I was gonna say something but not after this post, because you said what needed to be said. Thank you,

Let me guess Goldy...spelling bee king Edina elementary, 1968?;) You're right, except when publishing content on social media, "site" is also permissible. Nice try though...but you fanned on that shot.;)

In other words...back in the day some *hole messed it up, didn't want to admit s/he was wrong, so s/he found a loophole and made up an exception? :D

I'm afraid I may have started a trend.
What have you done? Serious board is serious.

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

Now that I read Harley's citing from the rules, I would say Helgy's elbow was a 2, not a 5.

By the letter of the law perhaps, but when it happened live I cringed and would not have been mad had the refs seen it as a 5 live in regular speed without the benefit of replay.

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

From section 15:

We want Culvers, clap, clap, - clap, clap, clap!

Edit:

We get Cul-vers!

Dear Matt Bailey,
How dare you continue to play hard and throw a shoulder to shoulder check on an opponent while racing up the ice with him! What do you think you are doing? You bring shame upon the Seawolves program by throwing a check in a hockey game that you are losing 7-1. Where is your head? OMG!1!! I'm so disgusted by you. That Gopher player could have been hurt. I mean look how slowly he got up after being checked shoulder to shoulder by you. Shame. Shame. Shame. That was just an awful display. Don't you know you are on the less talented team and are supposed to roll over and quit when the game isn't in question anymore? For Effing Sake Matt!!!! Look what your check cost the team!!! They lost!!!!

Dear Chris Crowell,
How could you lose your temper like that and try to fight the biggest goonish punk in college hockey like that?!?!? What is wrong with you?!?!? Do you really think that the pride of the Gopher was going to drop his gloves and fight you? Of course not ... and look what it got you. He got the last shot in while the linesman was pulling you back!!! Don't you know you're supposed to let the other teams goons slash you and cheap shot you the whole game when they are the #1 team in the nation.

God forbid that the Seawolves finish last in the league and the Gophers finish first and UAA has to go to Mariucci in the last WCHA playoffs as the only team to have ever won any playoff games in that barn. If that were to happen I can only hope the Seawolves learned their lesson late in the game tonight about trying and crap. Stop that Seawolves. Don't try. It just isn't done.

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

Nice rant!

When the seapups finish last in the league if they come to Mariucci (or any other 1st place teams barn) in playoffs they will get their doors blown off. So have fun with that.

No doubt that if they do get their doors blown off I'll have at least preemptively warned them to properly roll over for the "better" team.

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

Yes, it does matter. Indirect contact to the head is significant and not considered a major penalty according to the recently ratified NCAA ruling on contact to the head (NCAA, 2012). A minor penalty may be assessed in such cases of indirect contact to the head (see below), but it is entirely under the referees discretion to consider all the factors of such call. (The remaining loooong post edited for space.)
As is common, a message board post is taken literally. Harley you really didn't have to quote the rule but I guess I thought we agreed on the intent. It appears we didn't. So it seems we'll have to agree to disagree. I DO NOT feel Helgeson's elbowing penalty was incidental. He went at him with his arm up. If he wasn't targeting the head, he was reckless and out of control just like Currier was when he hit Budish from behind. For that, I would not have argued with a 5 minute penalty. Like Scooby said, if you hit the head or hit the back, it's really kind of ridiculous to complain about any call you get. You may have nailed the rule Harley, but the application on the ice can be very far away from the letter of the law when the head and the back are contacted.

I'm sure the Seawolves hockey players are waiting with anxious anticipation for your pearls of wisdom.

Get over yourself.

Your club got rolled by a superior opponent.

No shame in that.

Quit sniveling.

I think it's important to look at the official ruling on contact and incidental to the head to clarify why the ref did not call a penalty on the play and especially in regards to your statement, which the ruling indicates is NOT correct:

No offense Harley but your opinion is irrelevant once you agree the head was contacted. It doesn't matter that the pads were contacted first.

I've looked at the video in slow-mo several times and it's clear Helgy intentionally dipped his shoulder before the hit, hitting the shoulder pads of the UAA player first, NOT the head. According to the ruling, contact to the head in this case was incidental not direct, which is NOT considered a major penalty. The UAA player clearly saw the hit coming, so he was neither "vulnerable" nor "unsuspecting" of the forthcoming hit. IMO Helgy did NOT lead with his elbow, but with his shoulder into the UAA player's pads, so it's not minor penalty either. The video also shows the ref was standing about 10 feet away with a clear view of the play and IMO was correct in not calling a major or minor penalty. It was a bonecrushing hit, but legal. We can agree to disagree...not a problem at all. Go Gophers! Rah!:)

Gophers 7, UAA 1. Kyle Rau gets his first hatty as a Gopher.

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

I had to watch the Friday game on TV but was at last night's game. A couple quick observations.
Usually I think of UAA as having one or two players who are dangerous offensively and a bunch of slow footed players to fill things out. This team did not have anyone on it who scared me when they had the puck. None looked like they had WCHA level speed.
I know Donald has always been a ***** but now he seems like a whiny little *****. :D

Responding simply so you know I didn't ignore your response. I don't want to debate this anymore because I don't think we're far off from agreement but we do still have differing opinions. I think the only place we differ is Helgeson's intent and our interpretation of the rule. When I wrote the comment you've quoted twice now, I was assuming we both had the same opinion of Helgeson's intent. Since it appears we do not, that comment is somewhat out of context. That being said, your position on this is not unreasonable so I feel agreeing to disagree is the most logical.

If Donald = uaafanblog, I think he was over the top with his anger he displayed but I understand his frustration. If any of us Gopher fans on here also follow football like I do (15 year season ticket holder), you know what it's like to be inferior on the field for most of the games played. Every so often, all the stars are aligned and we outplay someone like Michigan, Ohio St, etc. However, a play or two here, a call or two there and we lose in the end. The anger I've had walking out of TCF Bank Stadium/Metrodome over the years has been as commonplace as Marco Hunt making a horrible call. It's because of that that I didn't pass uaafanblog any neg rep. If I would have, I'd be a hypocrite not to pass any to my football fan self.

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

The UAA player clearly saw the hit coming, so he was neither "vulnerable" nor "unsuspecting" of the forthcoming hit.

Just because a player sees the hit coming (often times for only a split second) does not mean they are not vulnerable. The UAA players head did snap back and it made me cringe. Having said that, this is one of the best Gopher teams I have watched in years. I fully expected UAA to get blown out in both games. The fact that the Gophers beat then #1 Boston 8-1 does soften the blow slightly ... this is a very talented Minnesota team. And I can't tell you how nice it's been to watch an assistant Gopher coach be interviewed and NOT have it be "nose in the air" John Hill!

Re: UAA @ Minnesota : 1/11/13 and 1/12/13

Since we don't know for sure if we'll be seeing UAA face the Gophers again for a long time (maybe playoffs but tough to say yet), I just wanted to give UAA credit for the effort they put in and have put in over the years. I think UAA players should be commended for working as hard as they do when they could just as easily shrug their shoulders with their record and give a passive effort. But they play hard despite being outgunned and you have to respect that.

I don't mean that at all in a condescending manner so hopefully it doesn't come across that way. I do think it is admirable for players to put in that kind of effort no matter what the odds.

Best of luck in your future conference.
