Re: TV Shows VII: Who gets canceled next?

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Using Lost as an example, he did make some connections eventually, but ended up leaving too much unexplained in the end. The problem is, unless they let it go for 2 seasons or more, I doubt he connects anything.
The problem is possibility is always more interesting than resolution. I am thinking specifically of how terribly disappointing X Files became after they started to try tying together the dots.

You can pull it off if you're constantly churning thesis-antithesis-synthesis, but you have to plan that from the beginning.

Exactly. Which is why Lost was great for about 4-5 seasons. No one knew what was going on, but the possibilities were endless, once they started tying things together it went downhill fast.

IMO, the problem with Alcatraz so far is that there just aren't enough dots out there that people want to connect. There is just a sliver here and there wrapped in a standard cop drama. Cut down on the standard cop stuff by about half, and increase W.T.F. factor by about 2x and they should be good.

My wife and I are on Season 6 of X Files. I'm now less looking forward to the rest of the run. Sigh.

I always find the incessant whining about the end of Lost to be amusing. Sure, there were some parts in the final few seasons which were disappointing but they tied everything together towards the end, picking a direction for the story to end and it made sense in the final episode. Several times they flashed back to some "W..T..F.." moments from the first few episodes, and made you realize what had really happened. I think specifically of the two bodies they found in the cave. They never explained those until the very end, and when they did, I thought it was marvelous.

Everyone always complains about how the story wrapped up, but I have yet to see one single person lay out their version of how it should have ended which would have made it better.

At least connect a couple dots, and have that connection spawn another thread of plot or something.

Lost was it's own worst enemy in that way. They built up expectations too high, and in order to actually end it, they had to shift the direction of the show to be more about answering the questions instead of asking the questions. The part that actually drew people to show was the mystery, at the same time people wanted to know answers. This leads to people thinking the show got worse at the end, because it had to shift directions.

Personally, I didn't mind it, because it had to happen or the show would go on forever and would die with no resolution. And no, I don't know of a way they could have ended it that would have been better, but I think the expectations of the big time Lost fans became way too high that the show had no hope of reaching them.

The camera pulls out to reveal the island and everyone on it was all in the imagination of a kid with autism.

Right. You've got the people, both good and bad who don't age, the blood drawing experiments, where the inmates have been, and what's behind the door at the prison. And then nothing that gives us any clues as to how it all relates. What we get is a new inmate, killing new people in new ways every week, which is gettign tiresome fast. It's just re-writing the same plot every week, and bringing nothing new. .

Huh... all these years, I've been facing the wrong way on the toilet.

Saw this, one article I read had a guy from the CA board of something saying that while people may not know, these types of things happen all the time at racetracks. The third horse reared up and fell over. Whether that had anything to do with a TV show is not clear...although PETA is convinced HBO is killing the horses on purpose.

I really enjoy the show, the scene on the boat last week came completely out of the blue...it would have been one of the last things I saw coming...the show will get even more interesting once Ace (Hoffman) figures it out.
