TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Might have given away too much, if you ask me. The teaser at the end is pretty major to be coming out after just one episode.
I didn't like that either. It's a transparently obvious "let's throw in something major sooner than it belongs to make sure people come back for the second episode" ploy.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

They need to explain why a usb stick plugged into a little power button locket can create power for things even though its not in contact with them or plugged in to anything. But a potato can no longer light up a light bulb.

They also need to explain how after turning the computer on there is apparently some magically running network that allows it to communicate with other computers, even though any sort of cell towers or routers or such are long gone. That said, it's an OK concept so I'll give it a few more episodes to see if it keeps me interested long enough.

I'm not too worried about that. Presumably, all of the infrastructure of cable lines and phone lines are somewhat intact, and should be able to be used for limited communication. Afterall, they are just wires, right? :p

I like how JJ Abrams brought back the Lost Computer. :D

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Here's what I don't get. Things that are combustible still burn (we saw candles and kerosene lamps and stuff), and if they burn in a suitable manner, they generate the appropriate amount of explosive force (so guns still work too, as we also saw). So, why wouldn't combustion engines still work? Sure, modern cars with electronics integrated into everything would be kaput along with smartphones and digital watches and everything else, but shouldn't cars from the 1970s run just the same as they always would, provided that you could find gas? Or older airplanes, for that matter?

I think the argument that you would get from the show is that if the fundamental physics are changed, then the forces that are created by an explosion aren't going to be the same, pumps may no longer work as they should, etc. It is basically a free pass to make whatever you want to still work work, and to make whatever you don't want to work not work.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

So I just upgraded to HD cable last night, and I'm receiving HBO for a year for free. Since I have HBO, I decided to watch the first two episodes of Game of Thrones using on-demand. All I have to say is that though I'm sort of intrigued by it right now, it strikes me very much as a soap opera with a lot more blood and naked women. It needs to get better before I'm really sold on it.

Also, I'm horked off at Charter Cable for the way they've implemented HD options. For the life of me, I can't understand why they didn't just take the lineup of stations from 2-71, then add the extra digit to make it 802-871 and therefore easier to use. While I've never liked the logic of their SD channel numbering (FX should be by stations similar to it, not hidden within the news channels), now I have a whole new list of illogically laid out station numbers to remember. I still can't find TBS or TNT in HD.

Comcast Numbers don't match either. For example. Fox News is 63 in SD and 844 in HD. MSNBC is 62 in SD and 845 in HD. FSN North is 28 in SD and 402 in HD (and I think its also got an 800 number option for HD but I can't remember that one).

If you assume that changing the magnetic poles messes with ANY electro-magnetic system that may prevent the spark-plug or ignition system from functioning and allowing any gas-powered engine to work. That wouldn't explain why diesel engines wouldn't work, but that might be explained by a lack of suitable fuel after all these years or not having a way to start the engines.

It's a fictional TV show, either you buy the premise or you don't. I don't, so I'm not gonna watch.

Personally, I love the channels on Comcast that HAVE 3 channels: Standard def, 720 HD (the 800s & 900s), and 1060 HD (the 400s).

I didn't realize they were different definitions. Thanks for pointing that out. Glad I've been using the higher def ones for the most part.

That is quite possibly the biggest upside of Dish/Directv...if FX is 136, FX-HD is 136a and if you type in 136, it goes to HD if its available on that channel.

For me, knowing it is fiction, I don't really even have to buy into a premise to enjoy the show. I know that the premise for Revolution is complete BS, and I can poke holes in it all day, but I was entertained by the show regardless, so I'll keep watching.

This. I wish more people would watch with this eye.

So, I head out to LA in a few hours for my annual Emmys trip. If any of you are so inclined, you can watch the pre-show and try to pick me out on the red carpet. :) Hopefully I will not be forced off sooner than necessary and will get some fun pictures! There is no one nominated that I'm dying to see win, like last year. When Kyle mutha****in' Chandler was FINALLY recognized for his role as Coach Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights. Eeeeeee! I'm still so excited about that and am hoping against hope he is there to present this year. They sometimes have the previous year's winner present this year's award.

E! has its own red carpet show from in addition to ABC's. And then the awards start at 8pm. They're up agains the Patriots/Ravens game. Will need updates!!! I am going to try and live tweet during the show.

To be fair, that's what the person from Comcast told me when I asked. Since it made logical sense to me, I just accepted it as an explanation and moved on.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I was thinking about the scene in the Revolution pilot with the confrontation in the village, and the line where Giancarlo Esposito tells the father that he wants to go home and he misses his wife and his bed. I realized it sort of reminded me of the scene in The Matrix where Hugo Weaving tells Keanu Reeves about how much he hates being in the Matrix because "it's the SMELL" and he just wants the whole business to be concluded so he can go back to... wherever computer programs go when they're not in the Matrix so they can be free to frolic in the computer woods or whatever. Both actors playing antagonists did a really good job of conveying that what started out as just business was rapidly becoming personal because of the resistance of the protagonist.

An EMP fries anything electronic not in a Faraday cage. In theory, after the EMP you could reconstruct a computer network provided it was not exposed to the EMP.

I'm also told that old cars would still run as they don't have the electronics that the modern cars do. It may also be due to the fact that old cars are made of metal and can ground to the earth. Modern cars are plastic/composites and can't ground.

Christ, I can't see how you could watch that first fifteen minutes and not be completely hooked.

Eh, I wasn't hooked for a few episodes. It did hook me and I plan on keeping up with it now, but it certainly wasn't in the first 15 minutes.

On the same topic, when does the next season start? I watched the first on DVD, and I haven't watched the second because I didn't have HBO. I do have HBO now, so I want to watch the second season before the third starts.
