I guess I'm just a little bit more open to some of these "reality" shows... Of the ones listed, I'll watch Deadliest Catch, Pawn Stars, and Swamp People... I don't get upset if I have something else going on and I miss an episode, but I will try and catch a rerun of the missed episode usually within the week...

Swamp People and Deadliest Catch have the same value to me... I love the whole man vs nature side of it.... As an avid fisherman and general outdoors person, I can relate to a good chunk of what the people on there face... Knowing several people that also have to rely on nature for a good source of income is something else that helps me relate to the show...

Pawn Stars is cool for the random history that comes up on it... The main draw is the "Hidden Treasure" aspect of it... I've watched Antiques Roadshow from time to time, but that was just too geared towards older folks for me... This is just more interesting and easier to absorb the information... I love seeing what makes a 1960 Gibson Guitar worth $4200 and what could make it worth $42,000.... This is also the "Most Real" of these types of shows... Aution Hunters, Storage Wars, ect. just seem too fake up front to take anything related to the items themselves from the show...

Another show I've started watching as of late comes from SPIKE TV (:eek:)... I've gotten into Flip Men... I think it's cool how they renovate properties and watching the problems they have to overcome... I am skeptical about the show being "fake" but it hasn't killed my interest yet...

There used to be a zillion of these shows before the 2008 crash (Property Ladder, etc).

I remember waaaaay-back when TLC was called "The Learning Channel". Akin to the Discovery Channel as I recall, with some interesting programming. Then it went to hell in a handbasket when they changed to TLC... there was absolutely nothing to be "learned" from watching TLC, other than maybe some sociological information on just how stupid the general population has truly become. A complete "180" in programming content, rivaled only by MTV's inability to play music videos (although I do believe MTV plays about 2hrs worth in the AM these days).

There was a good link posted here (I think) a while back talking about the evolution of cable channels and how they have morphed from their original visions to what they are now.... Several like TLC and MTV have nothing in common with the original visions and others like ESPN where they are still "Sports" but vastly different...

Cable networks need a niche to get a foothold, but that niche won't let them expand until they abandon their original concept and go for something more broad.

Makes sense.

The three worst crash-outs (cash-outs?) among cable stations were AMC, TLC, and The History Channel. (SyFy has become the Dadaist Performance Art of terrible television, but that's completely in the spirit of Saturday newsreels and PMI Drive-Ins, so good for them).

Believe it or not, TLC used to run shows like James Burke's "The Day the Universe Changed."


It now features "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."

Purchasing the homes, and the problems with the conditions, squatters and layouts (the polygamist house) are understandable and completely believable. Where I have issues is the fire that came about during the polygamist house. It just happens to start while they're in close enough proximity to see the smoke and get the fire department there in time to prevent a big fire? I'm sorry, but an electrical fire would have done way more damage than was showed on camera before the fire department got there to put out the fire in real life.

That didn't make any sense to me either. Course AMC has become a first rate creator of new TV shows and not just a movie channel.

Yeah, I was wondering... TLC is on at my apartment fairly often because my fiancee watches some of their wedding-focused stuff like Say Yes To The Dress. As a result, sometimes I see commercials for crap like Pawn Stars and Honey Boo Boo and whatever else. Not a whole lot of learning going on on that channel these days.

Pawn Stars is one that I have no problem with, I love the little history tidbits about different items that they present. For me it definitely hasn't gotten old. It isn't a show that I can't miss, but if there's nothing very entertaining on, Pawn Stars is a good fallback plan.

I don't have a problem with AMC's transformation, because they transformed into something that is still putting out quality programming. Sure, the reruns of stuff isn't that great, but they have some of the best original programming on TV.

Im iffy on Pawn Stars. I will watch an episode every now and then as well as American Restoration but I wont go out of my way to watch them. Of the History channel shows I watch American Pickers more often. Every now and then if you watch History early in the morning (6 am central time I guess is when I watch it when I first wake up...before I start really getting ready for the day) they will show an actual history show. Ive seen a few about the Civil War and other wars and there is a show on every now and then called "The Most" which was hosted by Mike Rowe. They will also occasionally show Modern Marvels which is another good show.

I have no idea who this Honey Boo Boo Child is, but someone somewhere needs to be slapped repeatedly for her existence.
