TV: Give Me That Remote!

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I just don't buy enough in a year to justify the Prime cost. It's a great deal, but not for me personally.

Okay. I wasn't advocating for anyone to get it, just that The Americans is available on the service if he does have it.

Yes, Amazon exclusive. Better Call Saul ALMOST is. Discs come out about a week before the new season on Netflix, so you really have to time your mail/watching if you want to start watching live.

I'd add Futurama and Star Trek TNG if your Star Trek wasn't a catch all. Sopranos is probably worth mentioning. I also think Frasier warrants some consideration considering it's only one of two laugh track showsI ever really liked (Newsradio). I'm also surprised The West Wing wasn't mentioned.

I couldn't stand The OA. It tried to be good but failed. Maybe I'll give it another shot. Seinfeld was also the single most-overrated show of all time. It had a few decent one-liners but I'd put Curb in over Seinfeld every time. Curb is everything Seinfeld failed to be (for me).

I'd put Seinfeld and Curb on the list.

Sort of surprised you like Curb but not Seinfeld. To me, Curb is like McGwire/Sosa steroid era Seinfeld. The super niche B or C plot in Seinfeld, or even what would just be a one liner, became THE plot in Curb.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I should backtrack a little, too. Star Trek TNG was the only Trek I liked. Guarantee it was due to my generation, but one would think that at least one other version would tickle my fancy. Nope, and not even close.

I tried starting the Americans but Xfinity made me pay instead of it being free on demand. I am still hoping it drops on Netflix, but I'm not optimistic.

Have you seen parks and rec? That'd be on my list too, maybe even over the office

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Ok, the opening credits of The Young Pope episode six are incredible. Did I completely miss the meteor the first five episodes?

I noticed the meteor sometimes around then, too, but I assumed it was there from the beginning. There is a very nice rundown of all the art out there someplace.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

While I hate Seinfeld, that should definitely be on the list of greatest shows ever, due to longevity and popularity and cultural reference.

Then put it on your list. :)

For example, most people would put I Love Lucy on The List. I loathe it and consider it a collector of eyeballs during a weak period of TV. IINM the highest-ever audience share for any TV show was The Beverly Hillbillies.

Some shows aren't on just because I've never seen them, The Wire being the classic example.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

The best example of a miniseries that belongs there is Band of Brothers.

For some reason I thought that was a documentary. (Never saw it.) Didn't include them because the theme almost completely makes or breaks them.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

dx - not sure why you need to get smarmy about Seinfeld - I could say things about Futurama but to each their own. :) (btw I too loved Curb)

Mini-series fit on a list I guess Kep. Band of Brothers for sure.

Not a mini-series but a few I missed are The Wire, Kids in the Hall, Homeland and Southland...

[edit] People also need to comprehend the difference between overrated and simply not liking something. I've heard people refer to The Beatles and Pink Floyd as overrated. Sure thing. I never cared for Michael Jackson's music outside of a few songs, but to call him overrated despite his immense presence on the industry for nearly 2 decades would be nothing short of full on stupid and I would question someone's faculties for uttering such an opinion.

Broadchurch S3 E1. If the opener is any indication S3 will be as compelling as S1 and much less the mess of S2. The opening scenes with new character Trish were gripping and it felt more like watching a real-life victim of assault than an actor portraying one. And I still <3 David Tennant and Olivia Colman.

Maybe. Seinfeld was just not for me. Which should be telling given how much I like Curb. Oh well.

Futurama is beyond reproach you heathen. Season 4, and I genuinely mean this, is some of the best writing in television history. It was almost perfect.

I also fully understand the difference between good, bad, and overrated. I almost added a note that I think the Beatles are the most overrated band of all time and are still probably both the best band of all time and most influential.

I didn't feel Seinfeld met that same standard. Seinfeld didn't innovate or do anything worth copying that Lucy, Cheers, or any other sitcom has done since. Curb is at least noteworthy in that they only frame the plot of each show. Almost all of it is improv.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Mini-series should count, though. And I'm sure I missed a bunch of very good shows (Outer Limits just occurred to me).

The Dick van Dyke Show needs to appear on any list of best-ever television shows, it seems to me.

and for a mini-series, the original Roots.
