Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Watched Sneaky Pete this weekend. Pretty good show. Giovanni Ribisi, Margo Martindale, Bryan Cranston were all really good, and the story was intriguing. Recommend this one.

I've only seen the pilot of that, looked really good. In fact, a number of their Pilot-only releases from last year were really good and ended up having seasons made. Amazon looks like they're getting things right in making quality TV.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

This just reminds me that Luke Perry played a (possibly) gay role in Tombstone. And that strikes me as kind of hilarious to this day. :)

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

OK, I'm only 3 episodes into Young Pope. I really wanted to use it as a backdrop to talk about theology and doctrine with joecct and other pre- and post-Catholics.

But it sho' as sh-t doesn't appear that we're going to get a chance at that. Instead we're getting Bonaventure on Acid with an Uzi.

I'll say one thing, though. So much for joe's much-loathed Church of Nice. :p

The kangaroo was the best part. I just about ****ed myself laughing when he saw it again.

Church of Nice is silly to me. It's just a thoughtless way to discredit priests and bishops who won't preach fire and brimstone. It all has to do with the priests you associate with, and the parish you attend.

I am biased, but The V2 Mass and its music were never a problem for me. At my parish, every Mass was a missa cantata, because Fr. Joe had a very good voice.

The 'problem' was that I realized that the Church, and my parents, had tried to dictate my sense of morality. So I set out to determine my own. Which is an ongoing project.

That was Jason Priestley.

You may now not speak of Tombstone for 72 hours and must only drink Surly Beer ;)

"Church of Nice" reminds me of Ring Lardner's great sentence:
"Shut up," he explained.

It's unworthy of a thinker of joe's quality and I suspect it comes to him through some other mentor like a father (or a Father). He's much better than that.

The longing for harsh discipline to remove the impurities and weaknesses of our human nature is a hubris no less than giving in to hedonism. The lust for correction is just another lust. It is the cause of so much misery in the world, and of error in doctrine tracing back to the poor old Neurotic of Hippo. Jesus would listen gently to those who yammer about it, draw inscrutable figures in the dust, and then say, "Love one another. Don't be an a-sshat."

We could take this over to the religion thread unless you want to bring Fulton Sheen in. :)

I keep trying to remember the 19th century heavy hitter conservative who crapped all over Rerum novarum. That's the guy Pius XIII is channeling so far, to me (though I am 99% ignorant on the really deep details of dogma).

But yes, I think we should cover the actual theology in TYP on the religion thread. We can kvetch about how terrible an actress Diane Keaton has always been here.
