Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

I wish Nickelodeon would release shows like Doug, Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, etc to Netflix/DVD. But as I understand it, the creators of those shows, such as Joe Murray (Rocko) and Klasky-Csupo (Rugrats) will be sitting on the rights to them until the day they die.

Rocko used to be on Netflix. It was dropped when Netflix opted not to renew their deal with Viacom last year. So don't blame Joe Murray.

I just got on Netflix this year. But as I understood it, Murray was never comfortable with being in the spotlight. And I thought he was going to take Rocko to the grave with him.

Speaking of Rocko, cartoons like Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, etc, could never be made today. Censors and uptight "media watchdog" types would have a fit. Even Spongebob, which started off as kind of a "Rocko 2," has tamed itself.

My crazy guess as to who Daryl found is Morgan.

We are thinking that Daryl and Carol tracked down Beth, and when they found her, they found other people too. So Daryl (and maybe Carol) are coming back with Beth, and other people that they have saved. My guess is that next episode, we're completely away from Rick's group, and we see what Daryl and Carol have been doing while Rick was kicking *** in a church.

I think there is something bigger coming with Morgan.

Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

Sleepy Hollow may be falling into the "when you're stuck, add a new supporting character" mistake. Woody Harrelson Antique Dealer is nice eye candy, but every show has a Q and those fields have been plowed. He seems to be a peg to hang the sister by (um, so to speak), and in all honesty I'd rather lose the sister, who seems extraneous at this point.

OTOH, they are really doing a great job on Abbie/Crane/Katrina, particularly in the last episode.

My Hail Mary idea on the four horsemen is:

1. Crane's friend
2. Crane's son
3. Crane's wife
4. Crane himself

And the Big Bad did note that Katrina can't be killed (at least yet) because "she is one of the sacred vessels."

Just watched WD coz we wasted our time last night watching the Packer game.

Anyway, pretty interesting (disturbing) watching the Termites stuffing their faces (and knowing what/who they are eating) and Bob's "tainted meat" blast was hilarious.

Judging by the look on Daryl's face, I think whoever is with him is not Beth or Carol or if it is, they're still missing one of them who is either dead or captured.

I think it's neither of them and probably a prisoner or someone that Daryl rescued.

Have to say that this season has started strong and maintained to this point.

The look on Daryl's face is what really has me wondering. And he was so cautious, in a place where he is supposed to have allies.

Watching SOA tomorrow when I can, and EODS has started what I came to post about:

What are this week's criticisms? Lessee:

Hypocrisy of main characters
Violence
No fresh ideas

I think I've covered it. ;)

I'll admit, though, Jax's dumbest (or second dumbest, I haven't decided yet) decision this week was actually fairly entertaining to watch play out.

Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

Well, if the book was John's journal, he read that....unless there is another book, and if there is...that is a criticism from me. "Oh wait, a super secret plot twist! Wow!" Weak writing there.

His dumbest decision was trying to negotiate with Marks. He should know better.

I don't think there's another book.

I also watched it tonight.

I think maybe my biggest disappointment (of many) with the series is that Jax's character potential was squandered. The series started with a young man questioning his direction and has (d)evolved into a badass guy doing badass things. He doesn't even question himself anymore. This leads to a very flat and uninteresting character with very limited depth.

Sure, maybe it's an intentional character arc (although I just think that Sutter lost his way), but a far more interesting arc would have been how the show started.

SOA was intended to be Jax's story and they dicked around so much with other characters (mostly the producer's wife's character... hmmmm...) that they got away from even featuring him. He hasn't grown in any way this season or last as far as I can remember.

Maybe there will be some sort of redemption in the end, but what Sutter has done has made me not care. Hard to do considering how into it I was for the first 3 or 4 seasons. They can all die and to be honest, Jax deserves to.

The only characters that I hope make it out are Nero (and his kid) and Unser. All the rest of the interesting characters are already dead: Opie, Clay, Tara...

I had no use for Opie. Nero and Wayne...still alive.

As for Jax, his character did develop...in a downward spiral. He started off inspirational, and devolved into the "life." This season is showing that the Sons are smart, but really.....their decisions (based on being street smart only), are hurting everything and everyone. Yet they cannot stop, due to their nature. They ran into more formidable opponents, ones that are more rounded. Their egos and ethos are killing them. And they see it, but don't know what to do about it.

The sitdown scene with Bobby shows that. He won't talk, knowing the consequences. Bobby knows he's lost, but doesn't care/sticks to his guns. Jax tries to negotiate, but too late. He threw the gauntlet, and is now trying to change the game. Too late, son. There is no clean answer, unless you admit defeat, which Jax won't.

As for Gemma....she was a HUGE character from the beginning. The matriarch. And in this society (especially in the Sons sub-society), that means a ton. It showed in the last episode with Happy's "We all do" quote about fearing her. What she says, goes. And now she's cracking. All this is ALL because of her. Diosa, Bobby, Juice, everything.

Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

I'll expound a little more...

In the first few seasons, they often showed vignettes of club life outside of the crime angle. Remember the fundraiser in the park? The different ways that they'd have to do legit work to bring in cash - Bobby as an Elvis impersonator. The crow-eaters and the wild parties? The family life of some of the members? The day to day business of the club?

I get that they are now "at war," but the vignettes added depth to the story and allowed me to become more immersed in their individual stories. That stuff is probably viewed as filler to some, but in my mind it's what makes a show like this worth watching. It's the advantage that television has over movies - television has time for that stuff. It's why Band of Brothers is so much more satisfying than any individual war movie could ever be.

I'm no longer in touch with the individual stories of the characters (other than Gemma), so the revenge that Jax is pursuing falls flat for me - even though the revenge is misplaced. At this point, I'm not even mad at Gemma and don't care if Jax ever finds out and don't feel like Tara is even missed from the series. Jax sure doesn't seem to miss her - he was joking around at the porn studio a few days after she died - he should have still been in a dark room and the club should have had to work to bring him back from that.

I can understand that part. Believe me (brother is a widower at 37 years old, with 2 daughters). And the vignettes you speak of, I don't mind at all. However, I do think that the core of the story is battle/differences. The vignettes got the story going, let you know how everyone's personality works/etc. Now, it's nut-cutting time, so no need for vignettes. Would I like them to be there? Sure. Is it absolutely necessary? No. The characters' backgrounds and personalities have been established. It goes from there.

I might be considered an apologist, and that's fine. I can live with that. I love the series. Is it great? Eh....is it very good? Yes.

I simply don't find Gemma to be interesting and more of her is not a good thing. I will say that Sagal plays her quite well, but I enjoyed Gemma more when Clay was there to balance her. I like Nero, but he's not Clay.

I disagree that Jax has developed. You can see the results of his downward spiral, but they didn't bother to show the process - it's just assumed. All we get are more instances of him thanking the club for standing by him and some more "I love you man"s that now fall completely flat.

By not showing the process of the downward spiral and the emotional anguish that led to it, they failed to bring me along for the ride. Show me the rage and devastating sorrow before you show me the torturing of the supposed killer. It would have had a lot more impact. The way it was presented just seemed gratuitous.

Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

They also completely gloss over his struggle through this to be a father and because of that, I didn't care one way or another what may have happened to his younger son. I don't believe that the character cares about his boy(s), so why would I?

I bought his concern for his first boy when he was kidnapped and I thought that his decision to let the couple adopt him (and walk away) was one of the most poignant moments of the entire series. Unfortunately, those types of moments are no longer presented and have become more and more scarce over the past 3 seasons or so.
