tUMD @ SCSU - Battle for First

That is crazy talk. Most of the students stink. This year more than most. There is a reason they went with professionals. Aside from Zack Fisch, name one student that did a good job.

I think Jim Rich does a pretty good job, and Mark Parrish is a great addition. Even though he is a little goofy, he is much better than the snoozefest of Tom Saterdalen and I think his success at SCSU and in the NHL gives a bit of cachet to the broadcast.

Terhaar is the best play-by-play man I have heard at SCSU. Rob Hudson was a little more homerish and had more fun, but Terhaar is more professional. He was great doing the TV games before he left for the Wild.

A lot of this is probably "the grass is greener on the other side" syndrome. Look at Minnesota. I remember everyone wanting Mazzocco gone, myself included. Then they replaced him with LaPanta, and it was like "bring back Frank Mazzocco!"

I have a good buddy who did the studio gig and on-ice reporting during his years at State a couple of years ago for Husky Productions. I think they do an exceptional job for a student production. It's not really fair to knock college kids.

With that said it's okay to knock the professionals. I'll admit the Gopher broadcast team could always improve, but KNSI's color guy (is that Terhaar?) is absolutely horrendous. I kid you not, I sometimes wonder if he's doing his best impression of Will Forte's idiot color commentator character in the skit with Jason Sudekis when they're broadcasting some obscure event. I hardly ever get the games, but I'll often listen to them if I'm not watching the Gophs. All I can say is woof.

I, for one, never wanted Frank gone. LaTVVoice....I mean, LaPanta.....on the other hand....

There were two good student play play guys when I was in school. We have one of the best mass com schools in the country let them first shine as a student. Clay Matvick seems to have done well for himself when he graduated and the other guy I can't remember his name but he was solid. Hell Parrish is good and he has as much experience as any student.

Terhaar does pxp, you're talking about Dave Reichel. As a sports broadcaster, he makes me want to put him in a bag and beat him with a 2 by 4

I love the snowmobile comments, pot calling the kettle black. the Duluth arena is Amsoil for Parise's sake. :-)

Re: tUMD @ SCSU - Battle for First

I am really looking forward to watching this series this weekend. It should be a good one and a lot of up and down action.

You guys are right about Dave Reichel, he has some bizarre signature calls but always provides the time left on the clock.

Like the Wild's Backstrom, Faragher is not a very good shootout goalie. Even so, the Huskies could still do better on the shooting end. Brodzinski tends to make his shots, but I almost think he should lead off shootouts with a gigantic slapper just to shake the goalie a bit. Whether he makes it or not, it could help the guys that follow him. Thoughts?

Not only would it shake them it could get messy. It sure wouldn't be pretty. I think any goalie that takes one high from him might have grounds to charge for assault.
He has a NHL quality shot, even his wrister, I wonder what his top speed is?

Re: tUMD @ SCSU - Battle for First

Is Faragher going through a sophomore slump and why was he a healthy scratch? I really cannot wait for Friday...this will be a fun weekend of hockey. UMD has a poor record at the Brooks Center but their road record is better than their home record. They just play better on the road...so odd.

I think Faragher is just fine and was given a break to refocus. He struggled a couple games (he's had trouble tracking outside bad/low angle shots and pushing/giving up rebounds out front instead of back in the corners) but looked good in his last one. Most of the struggles was team defense ( a lot of missed assignments and guys left alone in front of the net) and they look like they are finally turning that around again- they did a great job against Denver.

ahhh. So everything is all honky dory? Good.

It's time for UMD to get their first win in the Concrete Center since 2007.

I look forward to seeing the building with its nice lipstick on.

They do an exceptional job, for a student production. I have a good buddy that did the studio gig at SCSU as well. I am sure he would agree with me that most of the kids doing it aren't good. They have no experience and most of them are nervous as hell. Also, they are getting paid to do it, how is it not fair to knock them?

If I am paying money to watch the game, I don't want to listen to someone working out the kinks and stammering and fumbling for words. They have the radio broadcast, and the studio and the on-ice jobs for that. Let the play-by-play for the broadcast be handled by the pros.

He could be...but he's a junior. :)

His sophomore slump was winning a MacNaughton Cup and making a Frozen Four. What a bum!
