One is taking away nothing from anyone who isn't already law abiding. The other takes away the right of a city/state to enforce their own gun laws and I'm guessing you're a proponent of states having their own rights in every case except this.

In how many of those cases was the gun locked in a safe? Like I said, I was talking about a theoretical world where only people of above average intelligence own guns and handle them accordingly.

I prefer to not leave a firearm in a vehicle. It's too easily stolen.
Unless it's behind a lock that only I know the combo to*, I want to be able to feel it. Given that, sure, maybe "burr", but I believe a good, safe, smart one.

My point is that most of the issues with guns stem from people being stupid. Their kid finds the gun and it winds up at school, it gets stolen because they're dumb and it's not locked up, they shoot themselves in the foot etc.
If you're arguing that a very small percentage of smart highly dangerous people might still get guns in this scenario and society would still be less safe then I disagree but get what you're saying.
Well there are certainly different types of intelligence so I get where you're coming from there. In this case what I mean by intelligence is they know what proper gun safety is and exercise it. In that scenario, do you think the world would be safer?

No, I'm more of the belief that guns just plain aren't safe. Someone may practice great gun safety up until the day they get into a fight with their spouse and end up getting out their gun and shooting them. Is their a chance that they would simply stab them or strangle them instead? Sure, it's possible, but guns provide enough separation that people are more comfortable with firing a gun at someone than they would be to stab or strangle them.
I've said before I'm for a ban and a buy back program (I'd be willing to consider limited exemptions to the ban). I just think we have proven as a society that we can't handle the responsibility that comes with the privilege. Sometimes it's necessary to take the toys away.

Fair enough and I suppose all the background checks and preventative measures in the world can't always prevent that type of thing from happening. In my ideal world getting a gun would be far more rigorous and inconvenient.
This is what I mostly disagree with. It's the same type of crap logic kindergarten teachers, bosses, and other simpletons employ that make society a worse place. In the case of guns I can kinda see the reasoning behind this argument but that logic really irks me. (note I don't think you're a simpleton I just really hate when people employ that logic)

Football and hockey are dangerous, and we know it, and yet we put up with it. Players are continually hurt or maimed, some for life, physically and now we find with brain injuries. What's the cost to society. Look at what Jack Tatem did to Darryl Stingley. And then there's Butch Mousseau tragedy. He was just going out to officiate a game.
Time to take the toys away?
This post in no way was intended to denigrate the life of any specific person mentioned. I really miss Butch Mousseau.
Football and hockey are dangerous, and we know it, and yet we put up with it. Players are continually hurt or maimed, some for life, physically and now we find with brain injuries. What's the cost to society. Look at what Jack Tatem did to Darryl Stingley. And then there's Butch Mousseau tragedy. He was just going out to officiate a game.

I get that they are fun, fine, have shooting ranges with all sorts of weapons that are never to leave the premises. I just don't see the benefit that they provide to society that comes anywhere near the risk they pose. That's the bottom line for me.

See my previous post. There is absolutely a cost of football and hockey, but also a benefit. I'd argue that at this point the cost to society (the best argument here is likely the increases in domestic violence when the home team loses, not the risk to individual players) doesn't so heavily outweigh the benefit that football and hockey should be stopped. Perhaps at the individual level that argument could be made, not societal, but athletes are willing to take the risk for the benefit they receive.
