Re: TRP: It's Nut-Cuttin' Time

Ha.

(248): Hey cutie is the game almost over? I'm making dinner for us it'll be ready soon. Xox

(1-248): You would rather make ****ing dinner than watch a hockey game that rivals the epic-ness of miracle, the one of the biggest upsets in sport history? Babe I don't know if I can date a girl with such terrible priorities.

While I agree with the boyfriend on her mix up of priorities, it's really been grinding my gears that the US-Canada game is/was/has been compared to the 1980 game. Was the US-Canada game a good game? Absolutely - especially the ending, but it's not even in the same league as the 1980 game.

More precisely, while the game itself might have been as exciting (speaking in terms of entertainment value, that was a very good game of hockey), the situations just weren't at all comparable. This wasn't the most accomplished team in the world against a bunch of inexperienced college kids, it was a team of NHL stars against a team of younger, slightly less-experienced NHL stars. Sure, it would've been an upset if the US had won, but not on anywhere near the same level.

Agreed. Not only that, but the political tensions between the US and USSR at that time played a huge role in the reaction and, needless to say, there isn't quite the same tension between the US and Canada (regardless of people's feelings about Crosby :p )

Yeah, that's not political tension, really, that's just Crosby being an eminently dislikable person. (Amusing text I received from a friend not long after the game ended: "I have to imagine that Gretzky quietly thinks Crosby is a total d**che.")

Re: TRP: It's Nut-Cuttin' Time

If the USA had beat the Taliban or Iran in ice hockey for gold, then it might be a bit more comparable. Except those teams would suck at hockey.

There was the reaction in my apartment--

Me: f*. f*. Godf*ing dammmit. *face in to pillow*

FM: *silent, stonefaced, unmoving, looking like someone punched his dog*

PB was (luckily) at work.
I was watching the game with his roommate. My reaction? Slam the recliner down and punch the side and yell f*.
Then, text about a dozen people this: "F* Crosby with a god*amn mother f*ing 10 foot black c*ck and gauge his eyes with a letter opener."

I posted my after-game text here.

My favorite received text may have been "May the fleas of ten thousand camels infest that *er."

I wasn't all that surprised or angry... The US team wasn't supposed to do well in the Olympics anyway, the person who scored had a good shot and is a talented player, the US team won a silver medal, it was a good and close game that had us on the edge of our seats. I don't get the anger at all.

I'm with ya, sista. To a man, Canada had a more talented team. The US just had better team chemistry, coaching and especially goaltending. Once it went into 4x4 OT, it was bound to be Canada's game, I thought, as it opened up the ice for their talent more than the US could capitalize.

Looking back at the first time they played, you can't say the US beat Canada in a skill game. Our guys just had a better game plan, a little luck, capitalized on a couple mistakes and had the right game plan. I would have been shocked and elated to see the US win gold.

How does one gauge eyes with a letter opener?

That would explain why I was so angry. Not because I really wanted the US to win or anything.

Honestly, it probably does have a bit to do with the level of rage experienced though. :p
