Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

I'd go back to Colombia, for sure. Bogota was awesome. I'll still travel, just on my own dime.

It gets old doing it for work regularly. More often than not as of late, my clients are in the suburbs and it's a snooze. I saw almost none of Memphis. Omaha was pretty neat though, I got to stay downtown and I was pleasantly surprised.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

I think you should.
Hell, I triple-dog-dare you to do just that!

I’ll tell the coworker planning the trip. She’ll appreciate that.

I do know this trip is being pushed by high-level players. So... maybe ;) :D

(Especially if those high-level players come! )

I am sure you will get good answers here but you may want to post on GPL, too, I know several there have spend significant time in London including my kid. He was there for a semester not too long ago and has been back a few times since so hopefully he will chime in with suggestions.

I used to live in London. But it’s not my favorite place so I feel like I never know what to tell people. I do think staying near covent gardens or Kensington are good locations.

Sell it as an chance to get more work done with the extra space. Maybe cook up a mid-air "team building exercise" ;)

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

So I should try to justify on cost savings? Hell, I’ll even buy my own breakfast.

Cool story about the jet, when I was in London one of the guys I was traveling with had a grand mal seizure on a Friday night. No clue why or what caused it and he was discharged after a few hours. The lady who ran our group is really good and was on the phone most of the night working to get a plane there the next morning to fly him home because she didn't want him to fly commercial and risk another seizure. Thought that was really amazing; they got him the next day and he flew home with two pilots and the flight attendant.

I almost always try to bookend my trips with a weekend whenever I’m going to fun places. I know it doesn’t always work out, but I’ll definitely pick up the cost of a couple extra nights in a hotel if it’s a destination. When I had a conference down in Austin, I stayed two weekends. Totally worth it.

After working in a plant with little travel for six years, I’m ready to start traveling everywhere. Even if it means going to bum**** where ever. To get to bum**** you usually have to fly into a somewhat large city.

I know they’ve flown people home in the past when there’s an immediate family emergency or if there’s a medical reason.

I used to do this whenever I traveled. Now I try to get home at a decent time. I get to travel a decent amount, and get to see cool places, so I don't usually need to purposely extend trips for fun times.

I have gotten free time in quite a few places, just as a result of my work travels, free weekends in Sweden, Scotland, Bogota, Argentina, Mumbai, and now it looks like I'll get one in London too.

Part of the team I supervise is in LA so I now get down there a few times a year. I actually like LA so it's nice to go there, especially in May....November....March....if it works maybe make it into a long weekend and hang out with my parents in the desert.... :)
July wasn't as much fun but I wanted to do mid-years in person.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

July in LA is horrible. I thought I had died and gone straight to hell. Outstanding Korean food, though.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

Hotter than hell. I was in Monrovia/Acadia so it's even worse in the foothills, almost 100 every day. Cut out of work early one day a drove down to Santa Monica just so I drive up the coast and grab dinner outside somewhere. Get to the ocean and it's around 75 with a nice breeze. Amazing difference and a nice break.

Yeah, but you’re married. I’m not tied down to anything or anyone. Makes it a lot easier to justify those longer trips.

It’s really only been since the Philly Frozen Four that I started traveling again. Before hat it was during college we took road trips. So I haven’t burnt out from it yet.

I have no idea if you’ll like London or not. I’ve always loved my time there but I’ve never spent more than four days at a time. I hope you enjoy it.

I almost spent a summer (or longer) working at a plant in Camarillo. I would have almost certainly died.

I have responsibility for OCSD - Monrovia is where my team is plus we ship a most everything on the other side of the business from Irvine. I try to sneak a meeting in at Irvine so I can justify the higher cost of SNA over LAX. :)

If you ever get a chance to tour either one, do it. Really amazing. To me Monrovia was especially amazing, 30-40 foot bars of ½ or ¾ inch stainless steel comes in one end, brackets and bands for braces come out the other.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

I got to see the plant in seefeld this past summer. That was amazing stuff.

But I would love to see Irvine and Monrovia. You’re not the first person to recommend a visit.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

So, the London trip. I think I will have 2 days there, the 2nd night I will want to stay near Heathrow, for an early flight the next morning. I should have 1 or 2 other nights in London. What areas are good to stay, close to the sites, convenient to the tube, etc? I will be alone on the corp card, so hotels only, no vacation rentals, airbnb, or anything like that.

Second, with 2 days, what are the must sees in London, what do I need to sign up for ahead of time (tours and such) and are there any pubs or restaurants that I need to visit?

Thanks ahead of time.
Haven't been in a 'few' yrs but we only had 3 days last time I went.
-Hop on Hop off was tour buses were worth it for us. You can ride around, get off and on when you want and it goes to all the 'sites' so you have at least seen where they are. When we went it included being able to take the ferry down the Thames under the London Bridge.
-Things open at 10 and a lot of the touristy places last tour is at 2 or 3. You can't string many things together so decide what is most important and get there as early as possible. We are seasoned travellers and I lived over there when a kid. No matter how we planned we couldn't do more than 2 things a day
-Places you would expect to stay open into the evening do not- The Abbey, The Tower. I think they are still renovating Big Ben.
-If you want to see the changing of the guard in a different way go down by the barracks/Mews. (closer to Picadilly.) I like there better than the Palace. You can also walk thru the Mews (maybe this is the carriage house) to the Left of the palace for free (or you used to be able to).
-Westminster Abbey you can sit in the Quire for Evensong- that was really cool. The choir processes in, directly in front of you, and sits on either side of the aisle. Acoustics are amazing. -not sure if it happens every day.
-Going to the top of St Paul is cool- you go up a million steps through the dome and end up at the top- great panoramic views.
-Tower tours are OK but the timing was off for us when I went with mr and lil. The last one was at 2:30.
-London Eye is supposed to be cool but we didn't do it.
-Loved Kew Gardens but not enough time to enjoy it properly.
-British Museum you could spend days in. Has all sorts of really neat stuff. We never made it in because we ran out of time.

Check with ordering any sort of tix to hop on hop off over here. We got tube passes from British Rail for sig less. When we went you could buy them over here for deep discounts. I think we got the Hop on Hop Off from there too. I think it was a third of what we would have paid when we got there. AAA was helpful for some things.

I would like to be first in line to be smuggled in as your Admin Asst. SO jealous!

Steak and Kidney pie- YUM!!!!
McVites Digestive biscuits with dark chocolate YUUUUUUMMMYYYY!!!

Mookie is heading there tomorrow night.

Mookie stays in Kensington
Quiet, and easy tube rides to Heathrow and into town.

This will be 4th time since May and can still go see new stuff. Pretty cool city.
Hitting up spitalfields this time for sure. Mookie is flying girl in to see him this weekend. Asked if she wanted to go to Fulham and see a match. Should have just dragged her as a surprise.
Did put in for the hamilton lottery.
Will no doubt have to also try again tomorrow :(

Dishoom was recommended so we will eat there. Story goes if one wants to eat Indian food, one must go to London ;)

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

Mookie also booked a long weekend (Er Ramadan break) May 23-26 in Bangkok

Oriental city

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

Looking for spots to go for my honeymoon, and the top two contenders are Canadian cities at the moment. First is Banff, and we might have an inside helper getting us $150/night lodging - dirt cheap by their standards. If that falls through, we looking at Quebec City, which looks phenomenal in its European-style streets. A big part of our decisions for location is that we don't want to spend a full day on a plane.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

What time of yr? We went to New Brunswick this past summer. I wasn't sold on going, sulked the whole way there. It was absolutely beautiful. I was converted. WOuld go back in a flash. Lots of places to hike that weren't too hard, go to beaches with no people on them. Lottsa country music type stuff (yuck).
