Transfer Season

That's something of a "spit your coffee" moment. Understandable with the 'back home' and 'playing for sister' angles, but still...

Is it as big a surprise to Gopher fans as it is to me?

Not to me. Of all of the seniors with eligibility remaining, Potomak was one of three that I figured most likely not to be back. She never really clicked here. The highs were incredible, but she was inconsistent, and extremely penalty prone. I wish her the best of luck, and hopefully she'll access more of that potential.

I had the same reaction. Transfer to a Canadian school? Unheard of. That makes this question pop in my head....how would the best Canadian school fare against OSU?

The Canadian school would get crushed. Just like any Canadian school in any sport against any top American school's sports team.

And this is not some nationalistic statement. It's just the way the Canadian university sports system is setup compared to America's system.

Amy Potomak has already spent 4.5 or 5 years at UM, so if she doesn't have a degree left to pursue there, it makes less sense scholastically. In hockey terms, this would have been a huge impact early in her career. Now? She was centering the third line. I would never have expected that to be her role as a senior, but there we were. I think this will be an excellent choice for her for her final year of college hockey.

Money does not grow on trees folks. There is no payday in women's hockey. If the gal wants to work in Canada after she is all grown up, why would you get a Master's anywhere else. Remember, $50,000 US is like 70,000 Cdn. I can think of a number of girls that have gone back to Canada to finish their career.

April 13th Portal update. (Again credit to the poster on GPL for the information)

Now in the portal:
MYA NEUGENT Bemidji State University
TESFANESH HURD Plattsburgh State University of New York
VIOLA CHOBAK University of Minnesota Duluth
RACHEL MARTIN Plattsburgh State University of New York
HOLLY GRUBER University of Minnesota Duluth
JOSIE MENDESZOON Union College (New York)
LUCY DROUGAS Saint Michael's College

Interesting...Couple of UMD names on the goalie front.

Interesting indeed.

IF I'm reading things correctly, Chobak has three years eligibility remaining, Soderberg only one. Gruber has three years as well. Chobak doesn't want to sit or share duties for even one more year? Did Gruber know Chobak was going into the portal when she went in? Or would she have not gone in had she known a year from now she'd be the most experienced goalie on the roster?

-----------

Also worth noting that Gruber is from Stevens Point, WI (or maybe Plover), where she played at the same high school as Brock and Cole Caufield, and must have overlapped with Cole for one or maybe two years. Not that that means anything, just worth noting.

UMD has goalie Eve Gascon arriving next year.

Also looks like they have a commitment from Hailey MacLeod as well?

Short answer, yes. Long answer...The Gopher Puck Live site (which you link to) has a thread called Women's Team recruiting and that poster has posted the names of the women who have entered the portal.

If you don't want to do that much work here is what has been posted so far (credit goes to GPL poster NorthernGopher218):

"Here are women that have enter the portal since October. I have all NCAA teams because I don't which D2 and D3 play up."

....
MACKENZIE EMERY Merrimack College
....

Potentially dumb question: Is Mack Emery still in the portal as a Merrimack player after transferring to Plattsburgh this past January because she is still trying to transfer to another D1 or is the portal not updated after a transfer? Wouldn't she have to be listed in the portal again if transferring again?

Not dumb; I think it's the latter, portal not updated. People have posted other portal lists that have people who moved last year.

I skipped to the end and worked backwards a ways, so maybe there are other "wait...what?" items in there, but....

- I count ELEVEN from LIU. What's going on at LIU?!? Have they been too successful for their own good, and their players think they can move up-and-out of the NEWHA and off to one of the other conferences?

- Braendli ???

Morgan is out at LIU. Best guess is the "power of the people" pushed him out.

Could he have found a better gig outside of coaching? The way he mentions that his college coaching career has come to an end sounds like something very deliberate as opposed to statements we've seen from coaches unexpectedly fired.
