Transfer Portal 2026

Your surplus tax dollars hard at work. Wisconsin must be rolling in money and no real problems to solve. This country is so messed up.
They're actually sitting on a budget surplus and won't give anything back to us or spend it on schools which for the most part have massive budget shortfalls.

No, enforce the rules and follow the process as laid out.
The rules
  • Yes, players from different teams can talk to each other about transferring.
  • But it becomes a violation if that contact is directed or coordinated by coaches, staff, or boosters.

1. What the NCAA actually prohibits

Under NCAA “tampering” rules, coaches, staff, or school representatives cannot contact a player at another school until that player enters the transfer portal.

If they do, it’s considered impermissible contact (tampering) and can lead to violations.

2. Player-to-player conversations

If two players who already know each other (friends, former teammates, etc.) talk on their own, that’s generally not against the rules.

However, it becomes a violation if:

  • A coach tells a player to contact someone on another team.
  • A booster or staff member uses a player as a messenger to recruit someone.

In those cases the NCAA would consider it indirect recruiting/tampering.

3. Once a player enters the transfer portal

After a player’s name is officially in the transfer portal:

  • Coaches can contact them.
  • Other schools can recruit them openly.

It also becomes a violation if, after a player-to-player contact happens, the player contacted in turn relays that information to the school's coaches or other athletic department staff. The player so contacted is then acting, generally speaking, as an "agent" for the player considering transferring. And agent contacts prior to entering the portal are violations.

So, a player-to-player contact might well happen. But if it goes anywhere after that or beyond that, it becomes a violation. That is, saying player-to-player contacts are OK is a distinction without a difference.

Isn't a player a representative of the university?

It would also suck if players are friends and one says come play with us without knowing what the coach and staff are planning/working on. The player enters the portal and then the coach says sorry, we don't have room for you.

I'm am, in general, a believer in following rules. However, unjust rules should not be rotely obeyed. The rules around transfers are unjust, and I don't care if anyone follows them. They are designed to give the athletes as little control over their own futures as possible.
