Transfer Portal - 2024

Oh I guess three is the OK not to hate threshold lol

Well, for the record, at least on my part, I would very much object to your characterization of "hate".

I was and am critical of her reliance on the portal, because it is an unsustainable strategy for building a roster beyond this season, as COVID bonus years come to an end. That's not "hate"; thats disagreeing with a strategy. I would point to the "odd" makeup of the Ohio State roster as well as the six member incoming freshmen class as evidence that she realizes that as well.

As far as the Gophers go, they lost six players to the portal, so turning to the portal to fill their roster was about their only option.

So what she won two national championships. You are a hater. Woman uses portal, let’s criticize. Frost uses portal, golly it’s it’s his only choice! Unreal.

Johnson with four goalies on the roster for four years to win natties, and gets himself into a situation post natty time where he now has one goalie with any game experience…. Totally ok, just crickets about how they went all in and there are consequences later!!! You are a hater.

Four goalies isn't what I was referring to as to what is "odd" about the 2024-25 OSU roster.

If you want to point to any specific post I have made where I exhibited this supposed "hatred" of Muzzeral, this forum has a very good search engine. Go find them, quote them, and we can talk about them.

Double standard. If Coach Muzerall was a man then all would be ok. Their fragile male egos can’t handle Coach Muzerall, a mere woman, kicking their ***. Go Coach Muzerall! Go Bucks!

You can think what you want, but I promise you that is not the case.

If there were a male coach who had appeared to be mortgaging their team's future in favor of their present in this way, I would have bee just as critical of him. I compared it to general managers in baseball etc. who do similar things, and I am just as critical of them.

She has only 18 "skaters" on her roster because she wasn't recruiting four year players last year and the year before, counting on being able to just get more one year rentals from the portal. Well, she has only ten forwards, with a roster that IMO isn't as strong as last year's, and is an injury or two away from being in real trouble for the coming season.

I sincerely hope that OSU crashes and burns this year. But that hope has nothing at all to do with the gender of their coach. It's because they're Ohio State. That's a Big Ten thing, not a sexist thing.

(As far as kicking ass: of the last five championships, Wisconsin 3, Oho State 2)

I'm Timothy A and I approve this message.

Seriously it has nothing to do with gender. I hope Frosty and Muzzy finish 7 and 8. It's a Big 10 thing for sure.

At least you had Frost 7th...

Did I subconsciously put a guy ahead of a gal? Yikes, am I bad bad person or was it that M is ahead of O in the alphabet and I'm a smart smart person?

Frosty and I are tight since the world jr's when he sat next to me and my son. I'm sorry I drove you away with all my pro-BADger comments. Please forgive me! Come back!!!!!!!!!! We can make it work!

Brad Frost is such a nice person. I have had the privilege of sitting and conversing with him a few times at MN girls high school hockey games as he has scouted the talent. He probably would enjoy getting a chance to sit next to you again. He might even talk to you about the WELS thing that you have in your signature, given the opportunity.

Wow, I feel a bit bad about the atmosphere I created by him. I wasn't a jerk or anything, I was just pointing out to my son all the Badger recruits when they touched the puck or when one made a nice play.

I don't see my sig when I post, I thought those were bye bye.

It is funny tho. Many posters on the fan forum would hate Muzerall for using the portal. Now Minnesota is losing when it comes to recruitment, and the Great Gopher program needs the portal to attempt to survive and nobody says a word. It's too funny. Best of luck.

I'm ambivalent about it. As a general rule, I'm not in favor of bringing in more than 1-2 transfers each season. Beyond that, you can mess up a team's culture, especially if you're bringing in a number of transfers with only one year of eligibility left. It also can upend the expectations of playing time for players that are already in the program. I know a lot of other hockey fans believe in aggressive competition for lineup spots and if you lose out, them's the breaks. I'm just not in favor of an environment red in tooth and claw, not only in college athletics, but in pretty much any workplace. The way Muzerall decommitted a bunch of prospective freshmen after signing transfers a couple of years ago falls into my definition of problematic.

That said, if there's a season when a third transfer is justified, it's this one. The Gophers are bringing back only two of their top six defensemen. Klepinger and Franco got some time, but neither looked like someone that's going to grow into a regular, though I say that advisedly, as I said the same thing about Nicholson during her first three seasons, and she was solid last year. Not tremendous, but not someone that worried me when she came over the boards. They have three incoming freshmen defenders, and the two transfers. Adding some experience was probably a good idea, and Morrow and Parkkonen each have two years left.

As far as the Gophers go, they lost six players to the portal, so turning to the portal to fill their roster was about their only option.

I don't think the six outbound transfers were much of an issue in this regard. Five of them were forwards, four of whom never dressed and one (Sadie Lindsay) that saw her ice time dwindle to nothing by the end of last season. They still have a logjam up front.

It was more that they lost four heavy minutes defensemen from last year, three to graduation. Laitinen was the only one left who had gotten regular shifts for more than one season. Even if you really like all three incoming freshman defenders, that's not much experience to have. The Gophers have also been quite injury prone the last few years, so having more depth undoubtedly was on Frost's wish list.

I feel exactly the same way about football and men's basketball coaches that rely heavily on the transfer portal. It's just not a subject that comes up much on this board.

For me, it's not a Big Ten thing. I'm fine rooting for all but two Big Ten schools when they are playing anyone but Minnesota. It's an I Grew Up in Ann Arbor thing. The best thing I can say about Ohio State is that at least they don't wear green.

And schools that rely on freshmen basketball players who they know are going to be one-and-done freshmen: play a single season, and then file for the NBA draft. Never any intention of getting a degree, or probably attend many classes while they're there. Kansas and Rick Pitino era Louisville come to mind.
