Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

This thread could get back on track if each poster were to write...

Our guy can't hold a candle to Kyle Rau, but, _insert Name_ of _insert School_ is off to a pretty good start. ;) :p

Ross Mauerman of Providence. Very high on the freshman watch list. Very fast with good moves and above average shot.

Now you've got it! Wish I could see him play. You guys have any televised games coming up?

But can he hold a candle to Kyle Rau????? That's the main thing, here.

Ferlin will make the World Juniors so that will be one bump for him.

If he performs (a la Kreider or the kid from RPI), then he will have earned respect from the West.

Until then, unless you are BC or BU, the prevailing view is that the rest of the Eastern hockey schools get the letovers or get lucky with a late bloomer diamond in the rough.

I think Cornell got themselves a gem and it will be interesting to see if Cornell can keep him for more than 2 years. The Bruins' GM is a Harvard hockey alum so there may be a conflict of interest there so he may find himself in Providence sooner than later :)

Dude, it really has nothing to do with a lack of respect. It all comes down to this. If you are going to compare players by ppg, then you should also factor in the fact that Cornell has played half as many games as many other schools.

As has been pointed out, after 6 games Kyle Rau had a bigger PPG average than any other freshman in the country, but that average is difficult to maintain as more games are played.

Good article on Ferlin for those unfamiliar with him.

From tOSU: Dzingel, Angeli, Niddery, McCormick all have been impact players in the Buckeye's early success.

vs. BU at the Garden Saturday night on MSG network. Besides, I'm not sure he's even the best freshman we have. Joakim Ryan does a lot of great things that don't show up on the score sheet and is still averaging a point a game from the blue line. The other thing is that they will be coming out West to play a series at CC in January.

Some one will get Rocco's spot at the world juniors, it would be nice if it is a NCAA player.

Dang, may have to add back the sports pack on my Direct TV account so I can see this and some other eastern games this season. Will need to DVR, of course, as the Gophers play Sparty that night. Thanks for the info.

The fact that Johnny Gaudreaubey Baker has yet to make an appearance in this thread is a travesty. A TRAVESTY I TELL YA!

Appearance made. Travesty averted.

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

If there is any question about how good Caleb Herbert is, go out on youtube and watch the UMD clips of their games this year. I just watched the highlights from the Gopher and Mankato series. Number 21 is very special. He is incredibly good in open ice and around the net. He's an excellent skater with phenomenal hands.

No question the kid has skills. I think Ben Marshall is still looking for his jock.

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

Rau was rookie of the month for October ;)
Ferlin wasn't playing in October... stupid Ivy League OOC restrictions. But Rau is rediculously good. At this moment I see no way Ferlin stays all four years.
