Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

All NCAA players are student athletes, and none are even "semi" pro.

And yes, I gathered that you were ranking by points-per-game. However, my point was that it is harder to sustain that average over a long stretch and Cornell (and Ferlin) has played half as many games as some other NCAA programs (for instance, the Gophers and Rau).

In other words, we'll see if that lasts.

Really! I guess you chose to take literally my sarcasm concerning the differing levels of interest in studies and graduation rates among schools.

We will see. My real point is that Cornell has an incredible Freshman CLASS, not just one guy.

Don't even try to promote the ECAC or it's teams to the other leagues fans, especially the WCHA. To them you are a man with a fork in a world full of soup and will never have a clue. It's not worth the trouble.

And especially don't try to promote the ECAC while at the same time sticking your nose up at everyone else because of the academic superiority of the schools in the conference.

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

True. STUDENT-Athletes have a shorter season than the semi-pros. Nonetheless, the stat is Points PER GAME. After seven games, the Cornell Big Red still have three of the top 20 rookies in scoring:

Points Per Game (Rookies)

1. Brian Ferlin Cornell 1.43

2. Kyle Rau Minnesota 1.21

3. Cole Gunner Air Force 1.09

3. Ross Mauermann Providence 1.09

5. Joakim Ryan Cornell 1.00

5. Ryan Carpenter Bowling Green 1.00

5. Scott Wilson Mass Lowell 1.00

5. Caleb Herbert Minnesota Duluth 1.00

5. Ludwig Karlsson Northeastern 1.00

5. Ryan Dzingel Ohio State 1.oo

11. Jayson Megna Nebraska Omaha 0.93

12. Joey LaLeggia Denver 0.91

13. Joel Lowry Cornell 0.86

14. Brett Switzer Bentley 0.85

14. Johnny Gaudreau Boston College 0.85

16. Brian Sheehan Sacred Heart 0.82

17. Matthew Peca Quinnipiac 0.80

18. Phil Di Giuseppe Michigan 0.79

18. Josh Archibald Nebraska Omaha 0.79

20. Austin Czarnik Miami 0.77

and, Kyle Rau was at 1.86 points per game after 7 games. and he was 1.83 PPG after 6, so he led both lists. Nice try, but compare apples to apples next time.

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

College hockey fans would be hard-pressed to find a more productive newcomer than Minnesota's Kyle Rau. In the WCHA I also like North Dakota's Nick Mattson and UNO's Jayson Megna. What about the other conferences?
Brian Ferlin at Cornell for one. leads all rookies in PPG. Also like Joakim Ryan at Cornell too.

We didn't try, yet you're thinking about it (and mostly by Gopher fans for some reason).

look, cornell has some nice freshmen. but, if a fan is going to make snide remarks about other teams, expect other fans to make snide remarks back.

Look, let's just knock academic rep out of the conversation. It's irrelevant to whether or not these guys can play hockey. The class that Schafer brought in this year is as good as any class in the country (there's a reason INCH ranked it 4th) and we're seeing that from the early performances of Ferlin and Ryan and Lowry. We've had highly touted recruits like Madison Dias who haven't been dressing for games because of how deep and talented this class is, and there's the potential that Hudon may rejoin the team at the beginning of next semester. We're not saying the guys out west aren't playing great hockey. We're just saying that you can't have this conversation on the top performing freshman in college hockey and exclude Ferlin and Ryan. We understand we'll never convince the WCHAers that good hockey is played out east, but that just works to our advantage come NCAA time. Remember, it wasn't that long ago we were taking Wisconsin to 3OT.

While admittedly only through 3 games, Cornell is averaging 4.7 goals per game, and 16 of their 37 points have been scored by freshmen. I doubt there's another team out there who has a higher proportion of the offense coming from freshmen. Cornell could be back to "scary good" in a couple of seasons.

When has Cornell been scary good? I know in
years past they have had some gaudy win/loss records, but it is always puffed up by playing
in the EZAC (sorry) and come playoff time they
get out skated by you know a skilled team.

Also of note here, how many of these kids are true freshmen? I know Rau from the gophers is.

Ferlin's 19, Ryan wasn't draft eligible. And lets see. Took your Gophers to 2OT in 2005, took eventual national champs Wisconsin to 3OT in 2006, Frozen Four in 2003. They've been good. Stop dissing eastern hockey. Besides, the best season your Gophers have ever had pales in comparison to the best season the Red have had.

When were these great Red teams? Did you
watch those mentioned games? Those teams
were were skated around up and down the
rink! The net minder(s) (including the big
Canadian defensemen) kept Cornell in those
games. I remember that double ot game with the gophs. The whole Cornell team sat in front of the net while the gophs skated down almost every puck. Frustrating to play against yes, but scary good, no. The ECAC had not had a consistant national contender in a long time. It is proven, come NCAA time they can't compete skill wise.

But, this thread is about the freshmen playing today.

At 4.17 goals a game this isn't your father's Cornell. besides, there's nothing wrong with being defensively stout. That and this freshman class of Cornell's is as good as any in the country.

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

I will not put them with the other players due to games played and numbers, but Tommy Fallen and Nicholas Weberg have played very well for Yale so far. The goal numbers aren't there for Yale this year, I think Cornells PPG is double Yales, talk about a 180.

I said Cornell had some nice freshmen. By mid season we will know if they are great.

Re: Top Performing Freshman in 2011-12 Season

It was an old board meme from the 2003 season, when Cornell was the #1 overall seed going into the NCAA tournament, with a gaudy 28-5-1 record and a GAA of around 1.3 but against an admittedly weaker schedule. Nobody quite knew for sure how they would stack up in the tournament, and with a defense as tight as that, it's almost like you're playing in overtime the whole game - the next goal could win it. Hence, people kept referring to them as "scary."

(They ended up losing a 3-2 semilfinal heartbreaker against UNH, with one early goal that took ~10 min of video review to disallow and also put one off the UNH goalie's mask with 10 seconds to play)

This thread could get back on track if each poster were to write...

Our guy can't hold a candle to Kyle Rau, but, _insert Name_ of _insert School_ is off to a pretty good start. ;) :p
