Are you talking just Hockey East or all of college hockey? I'll answer just for Hockey East because I don't get to see enough of the other conferences -- Nick Schaus.

There are others in Hockey East. Also from Lowell you have Maury Edwards, and you Kevin Shattenkirk of BU. I'd give Carl Sneep (this year) and Justin Braun also an honorable mention each.

as for their freshman year i stick by what i said.

also i was like 18 at the time.

Also, since the title is "defensive players" and not just "defensemen", I'll give a shout-out to Luke Popko. Not many forwards are better than him defensively.
