I saw Being There in the theater as an 11 y.o. and for some reason didn't appreciate it and should probably revisit. I might be giving myself away, but I wonder if others of a similar age enjoyed (as I did) films from that time such as Deer Hunter, Young Frankenstein, Heaven Can Wait, Close Encounter, Jaws, Rocky, Taxi Driver, Godfather, etc. I know many of those films are no-brainers in retrospect, but seeing them at that age?
Probably time to see it again. I think you may pick up on a few more things. My parents took me to "Being There" in the theater also. I believe that we are about the same age - I was born in 69. To say I didn't quite get that movie would be accurate. Haven't seen it since.

They also took me with them for Jaws. This was 1975 or 76. I was 6.
To make it even better, we were vacationing on a lake up in Northern Wisconsin. I woke up screaming in the middle of the night and wouldn't go near the lake. I was terrified of the stand-up shower in our cabin as it felt like I was in the shark cage and that the shark was swimming up behind me.
Good memories!
On the better side, they also took me to the Blues Brothers as an 8 year old. I still remember loudly asking what all that stuff that Belushi had at the prison was for and adults around us giggling.

As about a first grader I walked (we had neighborhood theatres in those days) to the Lido theatre to see "Greatest Show on Earth." A big, sprawling Cecil B. DeMille circus movie with a gigantic train crash, and lots of celebrity cameos. What could possibly attract a little boy? Well, I saw it through to the end. And saw it through to the end a second time. And watched it through 'til the train crash a 3rd time. It then occurred to me I'd been there all day, and I better be heading home. As I walked up the aisle, the old man was walking down the aisle looking for me. IIRC, he didn't kill me, but it was a long walk home.
One of the biggest head scratchers ever for the best picture oscar. But, jeepers, who cares when you're a little kid? Jimmy Stewart as Buttons the clown. Major win.

With me it was 2001 at the Glendale Cinerama in Toronto. My best friends and I spent several Saturdays sitting in the front row watching Hal misbehave
Best Chariot Race: Ben Hur
which probably also was the inspiration for the pod race in The Phantom Menace
I think "Them!" has the greatest slow-burning fuse intro prior to the reveal for any monster movie. Also the best use of traumatized child actor (beautifully recreated decades later with the character of Newt in Aliens). As was "Them." "Them" also had the huge advantage of some really good people in the cast: Edmund Gwenn, James Whitmore, James Arness.
"Chloe, Love is Calling You" -- best racist 30's horror movie featuring voodoo and miscegenation; second-best alligator scene (after "Live and Let Die")
mea culpa.
