tOfficial 2012 Outdoor Great Lakes Invitational Thread

Re: tOfficial 2012 Outdoor Great Lakes Invitational Thread

The part I don't get is why the need for two rinks for the same event. Seems like a huge waste of money to do only the NHL game in Ann Arbor and everything else in Detroit at the baseball stadium. Does the NHL really think they need 100,000 seats for an event that happens every year now? While I think I will certainly plan to attend regardless, and I'm sure the choice of Western vs SCSU came down to local fans and alumni, the need to split the event between two locations is a big head scratcher for me.
Besides this is all speculation because I haven't seen anything final posted on Tech Hockey Guide yet, which is what will make it official. It's a well known fact that NHL.com uses THG as a source for their stories...

I think Illich really wanted to use Comerica but got over-ruled by the NHL and NBC, so ta-da for the GLI.

Re: tOfficial 2012 Outdoor Great Lakes Invitational Thread

Official Michigan Tech release.
DETROIT, Mich. - Michigan Tech, the annual host of the Great Lakes Invitational Hockey Tournament in Detroit, will take the event outdoors in 2012. The 48th annual GLI will be played at Detroit's Comerica Park as part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival and in connection with the NHL's annual Winter Classic, which will feature the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium.
The GLI games will be played Dec. 28 and 29 on an ice rink built inside Comerica Park field, home of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers. The field of teams for the 2012 GLI are all from Michigan. The semifinals on Dec. 28 will pit Michigan Tech against Michigan in the first game followed by Michigan State vs. Western Michigan in the second. The GLI Third-Place game and Championship will be played Dec. 29.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase some of the best college hockey in the state in a unique environment," said Michigan Tech athletic director Suzanne Sanregret. "We look forward to working with Olympia Entertainment and Comerica Park to host a memorable event for our student-athletes and fans."

The GLI will comprise only part of the action at Comerica Park during the Hockeytown Winter Festival. A game between notable Red Wings and Maple Leafs alumni is on tap along with other games from youth, major junior and minor professional levels.

Both the Red Wings and Tigers are owned by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who were instrumental in bringing the Hockeytown Winter Festival to Comerica Park.

"I want to take the opportunity to thank the Ilitch family for giving college hockey-and specifically Michigan Tech-a chance to be a part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival," said Tech head coach Mel Pearson. "Having been a part of three outdoor games in the past, I know our players are being afforded a special opportunity to play in an outdoor game. We really look forward to playing at Comerica."

The Hockeytown Winter Festival will begin mid-December at Comerica Park. The GLI will be the first games showcased on the Comerica Park ice. The 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be played on Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium.

Game times for the 2012 GLI and the full schedule for the Hockeytown Winter Festival will be announced at a later date.

Re: tOfficial 2012 Outdoor Great Lakes Invitational Thread

I'll start this comment that I will attend regardless, but honestly watching hockey in a baseball stadium is like trying to shove a square puck into a round net - A bad fit. Even in a football stadium you're a mile from the rink and in a baseball stadium it is worse. The folks on the corners of the rink actually have the best possible seats. and everyone else... bring your telescope or portable TV. At least put the rink along one of the baselines. I'm sure they think they will pack the place for every game, but the NHL can't even pack a baseball field for their games. Let's be realistic and make it viewable for the fans, eh?

very cool!!! I hope to attend - it will be a great sold out event. SCSU? how's that NaCHo league working out for ya?

Re: tOfficial 2012 Outdoor Great Lakes Invitational Thread

I have to wonder what the prices will be for the event... Given that this is the 2nd tier event, I would hope that a majority of the seats are $20 or less...

What does the NCHC have to do with anything?
Did you forget Western is NCHC too?
The NCHC won't even exist next year anyway, so this will be 3 CCHA schools and 1 WCHA school.
I doubt St. Cloud ever accepts a GLI invite as long as Motzko is coach now.
I also don't think adding Western over St. Cloud will mean that much of a bump in attendance but whatever.
St. Cloud will now be in the Catamount Cup next year.

I find this to be a foolish statement. Western Michigan has a significant alumni and student base in SE Michigan. Whereas St. Cloud probably has an alumni base in Michigan that is in the hundreds.

Who cares how many there are in Michigan?
It's not like Detroit is hard to get to from the Twin Cities and I know the CIC would have been planning a trip out there.
I don't think we would have been poorly represented fan wise.

Don't be silly, of course Western will bring tons more fans than SCSU. Also, I am sure they would play in the GLI in a different year if asked. It would have been nice to play Michigan since this tourney or the NCAA's is the only way that will ever happen. In the end it is not a big deal. Detroit is one of the worst cities in America and there was no way I was going to go and doubt either would most Husky fans. However, I might go to Vermont or even make the trip to New Hampshire when we play out there next year.....

Mike Illitch wanted the event at Comerica Park, but the NHL makes the final decision on where the event is located. Think of adding a rink in Detroit as a compromise. Remember, this is a major event, which is also a small economic boon for whatever city it is held in. Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan are going to reap the benefits. Hell, we already know U-M got a $3 million pay day just for leasing the Big House. But the city of Detroit and their businesses miss out by not having the event at CoPa. But according to an NHL press release I just received, they believe 250,000 people will attend the Hockeytown Winter Festival in Detroit leading up to the Winter Classic, so look at the second rink as a way to not totally screw over the city.

As for Western Michigan being in the event and not SCSU, I'm not surprised. A few days ago they said they were going to announce the GLI participants soon, which seemed odd because SCSU was already pegged in that spot. I had a feeling they might make this an all Michigan event. It's not about attendance. It's about showcasing all things Michigan.

We got dumped bc of geography. I will admit, I really wanted to go to this event. But if my choices were miss a hockey game or have St. Cloud in the state of Michigan, well when I look at it that way its like I dodged a bullet.

Re: tOfficial 2012 Outdoor Great Lakes Invitational Thread

I honestly don't really care. I'm probably in the minority but I'm a bit bored with the whole outdoor hockey thing. Funny how folks were ripping the target center for having bad site lines, being a basketball arena, etc but others get all hot and juicy about sitting 4,000 feet away from the ice in a baseball stadium just becuase its outdoors. Meh.

This is coming from a guy who's NEVER been to Detroit. Sure there are spots that appear to be Beruit or post-war Iraq but downtown doesn't feel much different than any other city in America and the area around Ford Field and Comerica is certainly much improved. I hope the Huskies (St. Cloud variety) get invited for 2013 instead as I've had this trip circled on my calendar for 3-4 years.

Not near as bad as playing in a football stadium. I do agree it should not be over done. There is already proof based on the results in Ohio.

Maybe that's just confirmation that the state of Ohio sucks.

Agreed, I had a lot of fun down there going to Tigers/Twins games when I lived in Clio.
