Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

Apparently a lot of returning players have been working out hard in the weight room this summer and put on some muscle mass.

Hate to break it to you but we heard the exact same thing last summer.

You are right we did. I have the feeling we will have a good indication of what this team is gonna be like really early . If it is the same crap they have been doing the last 3 years it will show right away just like good habits can be hard to develop bad habits can be hard to let go. All we can do is hope

True, and the "Good Chemistry" line. I've decided I'm gonna join Slapshot and start the positive vibes early.;)

Wait until you guys try the Kangas Kool-Aid. The crops for the ingredients were especially bountiful this year, and should make for a rather robust beverage.

:D Russian Standard got me through the last season feeling pretty positive.

We've definitely been down this road before regarding the Gophers and their summer weight room training. I will be more interested to see their effort and chemistry on the ice. Hopefully, the larger roster size this season will create "real" competition for ice time and Don cracks down on players who do not hustle on every shift or are unwilling to pay the price and go to the net. I agree that we will know alot about this team following their first 3 series against UMASS, UNO and SCSU. Although wins are the primary measuring stick, if they play with the same grit/tenacity and general lack of heart which they've shown over the last few years, we're going to be in for a long season.

How well do the Gophers top 4 incoming freshmen measure up against NoDak's 4 freshmen? Are we less likely to see success from the Gopher freshmen due to the size of their incoming class? At least on paper, it looks as though NoDak's freshmen may be more likely to have more success this season compared to the Gophers frosh just because NoDak has more overall experience on their roster.

I'd love to see a Hoeffel/Sacchetti/Budish "CRASH THE NET" power line.

Hoeffel - 6'2", 205 lbs. (+8 lb.)
Sacchetti - 6'0", 193 lbs. (+7 lbs.). Most improved player on points and very consistent on faceoffs Ws last season.
Budish - 6"3', 221 lbs.

In terms of age and size, this an older and bigger (and hopefully more physical) team this year with an average age close to 21.

IMO, this team should suprise people especially since they are older than past Gophers team. All of them must understand they need to out work every opponent next year or the season will be lost.

Hope you're right 444! How many times have we all heard about the "talent" on the each Gophers squad but when the season is over and everyone looks back, success or failure always seems to come down to the team's work ethic. Even if a team has all the talent in the world, without consistent effort by each player every game, a team will only go so far. I'd love to see a "CRASH" line as well especially against NoDak!

I don't recall off-season weight-training being a subject of conversation in the recent past, not that it should get anyone excited anyway.

Almost every team in the bottom half of the WCHA has a skating treadmill. Whats it going to take for UAA to break out the Amex? :D

F Taylor Marson, 6-0, 186 ... Can he stay injury-free this season?

Marson must have really been injured, never even heard of the guy....

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

I don't recall off-season weight-training being a subject of conversation in the recent past, not that it should get anyone excited anyway.

Talk of guys being dedicated, working out and adding weight sounds like a broken record from last year around this point of the summer.

The only difference was, a lot of people expected a lot out of that team. Hope is about all we have this year, after last year's performance (as opposed to expectations.). No one denies the individual talent is there, just not a lot of faith they will have the drive.

And to Johhnyrocks, success or failure comes down to how hard a team works for every team in the league. Each year, only one team works hard enough to get the ultimate prize. Without the talent, though, hard work can still only get a team so far. The Gophers do have enough talent to put together a good team, and that is the first step. (But then again, they did last year as well.)

I was one of the people predicting a strong finish last year, and I can't expect that. However, as I've said before, I just have to read enough of Scoobie's posts and I feel like an optimist in comparison. So I am going into the season with no expectations and hope to be surprised.

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

If you are going to be in northern MN on August 28th, stop in at Grand Rapids to watch the “Face Off Against Cancer” hockey game pitting NHL alumni versus some Grand Rapids residents and former players. Among the the NHL alum team are many ex-Gophers and names you’ll recognize: Brad Maxwell, Jon Rohloff, Tom Chorske, Robb Stauber (not listed as goalie?), Tom Youngans, Jeff Nielson, Joe Dziedzic, Matt Koalska, Sean Toomy, Shjon Podein, Derek Plante. The Grand Rapids team includes; Aaron Miskovich, Chris Marinucci, Grant Bischoff and Trent Klatt. There is a dinner associated with it, as well as a silent auction (with lots of hockey related memorabilia, I am sure). The event is being held to raise awareness of cancer in the community. As many of you may have read in previous posts, Jackie Bischoff, wife of Grant Bischoff, is fighting stage 4 lung cancer. She is a phenomenal woman that has inspired hundreds, if not thousands of people. You can read more about the event at www.teambisch.org.

I am not among those soliciting donations, but was surprised that while there were several donations of jerseys, ticket packages, autographed pucks from NHL players, other WCHA schools (Bemidji), Bruce McCloud, the Wild, the Twins and others, there has been very little from the Gopher hockey program thus far. Maybe that will change since at the last fundraiser there were several past players and Lucia in attendance. However, if anyone associated with the Gophers reads this, I would ask you consider donating items for the silent auction as well, if it hasn’t already happened.

Where's Baker? Will he at least be there to help the guys who get their teeth knocked out?
