Thoughts on a New England invitational

I know this probably won't work, but make it a 16 team tournament with the schools I listed. Like a mini ncaa tournament. The Beanpot could be one quarter. Then put UNH, Dartmouth, Maine, and Vermont together. Quinnipiac, Yale, Uconn, and UMASS together. Leaving Providence, Brown, Merrimack, and Lowell.

dude!!! what ARE you smoking :D

Re: Thoughts on a New England invitational

Haha for the Beanpot lovers. I like to just keep it to 4 but just throwing out all possibilities.

I don't think it would draw as well or take hold as well. If the tournament was held in a central location... say Manchester it would be an easy trip for UNH/UMO/UVM/UML for example and should be an attendance success with even a minor amount of marketing
After the disappointing attendance at the Dartmouth-UNH game in Manchester this year I suggested rebooting the RiverStone in to a four team weekend tournament, first day: UNH-Dartmouth, UML-Merrimack; second day loser vs loser, winner vs winner. UNH, Lowell, and Merrimack are all nearly equidistant to the Verizon Wireless Arena.
UNH is already playing Maine four times in the next two seasons (one each at home, one in Portland, AND one in Manchester), add in the possibility of meeting in the playoffs and it's too much even for this Black Bear hater.

IMO, what I'd do is allow the best HEA public school set it up (this year would be Lowell, for instance) at a site of their arranging (home or otherwise) and then try to invite public schools from Minnesota, Michigan/Ohio, and ... I thought I had a 3rd... the last one could just be a wild card... but keep it as a Hockey East sanctioned event. This way the tournament is a reward for performance. If a school is already pre-committed then they can pass the opportunity down in the standings.

If schedule creep is a problem then make it a two-years out thing (I suppose that's still Lowell and Lowell but you get the drift). Other teams would be interested as the best public school is likely (more often than not) to be at or near NCAA tourney eligibility.

Re: Thoughts on a New England invitational

On this general subject there is talk of a Connecticut Tournament with the 4 D1 schools, Quinnipiac, Yale, UConn and Sacred Heart to be played annually. I've also heard of a couple of potential modification of that which would include UMass-Amherst. In one UMA would play rather than Yale in another UMA and Yale would alternate due to the Yalie's schedule limitations, or where UMA is part of the field in place of Sacred Heart. The final version has a field made up of 4 of those 5 that would rotate each year. Supposedly it is being pushed hard by Pecknold and the UConn AD, and variously called the Colonial Cup and the Tim Taylor Cup, and the I-91 Championship. The hosting the event would at least initially rotate among the participants with the hope of finding a permanent neutral home at some point if it becomes a success. My view on this is if you're looking to replicate the Beanpot, you probably won't but we won't know that for sure for a quarter century. But if you want to do it because it will be fun for the fans and the players, by all means go for it.

Re: Thoughts on a New England invitational

So, would it be the flagship university or the satellite university for Massachusetts?

Just make sure you correctly denote which university is the flagship.

[hint: it's not west of Worcester.]

Re: Thoughts on a New England invitational

Fitchburg State?!?

That would dis-include Fitchburg State... though the thought is unsettling (public info, I'm from Fitchburg). My sister get upset with me over xmas for say that Quinnipiac would be a superior school for all but one or two small scenarios than Fitchburg State when costs are eliminated as a factor (edit: apparently a cousin is near the top in her HS class... only fair, her father is a BU alum). Sigh, family. Of course most of that was because "I was belittling the school she went to in order to belittle her"... again... family.

Of course I'm a separatist, I don't want anything to do with UMass and would rather stand on our own right from a branding perspective.

Re: Thoughts on a New England invitational

I think this is a great idea. Get 2 ECAC schools and 2 HE schools each year (excluding BU, BC, NU, Harvard). Play it INDOORS and rotate the location for a couple years at least. I don't think you can just start it at the Garden. For the first 5 years it would probably need to be played in AHL arenas until the idea catches on. Let the winner come back but keep the rest of the teams rotating. Big problem is the Ivy's lack of flexibility but I'm sure you could get at least one Ivy on board every year.

Re: Thoughts on a New England invitational

dont mind FiveHole, he's from the So Shore so unless it's an arena BC plays in , it doesn't exist :p
Haha... we have plenty of rinks down here and some pretty good hockey players that play in them. But I pretty much just follow the Eagles and D-1 hockey these days. Get to see the local kids when they show up at the Heights or on another HE team. :)
