Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!
I've been around this sport for about 40 years now and enjoy what it has to offer at many different levels. Canadians cheering en masse against the United States wasn't commonplace in years past, at any level of the game. It is commonplace now at every level of international competition I have followed. To claim otherwise is simply a mistaken notion. To also say they wouldn't root for the Russians over the American team is a complete fallacy as well. There are plenty of international examples, including the Olympics IIRC, where Canadians have done just that. Last year the US team was seeded 5th in the World Jrs (not that the seedings year-to-year really matter in this type of a tournament as a predictor, I know) and the Canadian fans didn't root for us as underdogs. I agree with the others who note this happening seems to be traceable to the 1996 World Cup and the victory by the US NHL players.
I do agree that the Canadians support this tournament with gusto, and it would be tough to hold it in the United States without Canadians nearby to help it along financially. It makes for a better environment when the seats are packed and people are really into the game, regardless who they cheer for.
As for Canadian fans cheering against USA, what do you think is going to happen?! Canadians tend to cheer for the underdogs. USA is a big rival for Canada in all things -- there's what, 33 million Canadians and over 300 million Americans? So of course Canadians will do whatever they can to beat Americans in any sport, and probably cheer for anyone playing the USA (except probably the Russians ...). That's sports. Not life. Canada is USA's biggest trade partner, and most loyal ally (except for the Bush misadventure in Iraq ...). That will probably never change ... unless you vote in another Bush or Caribou Barbie.
