The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Calling for 60 mph winds in Maine tonight, just filled another 5 gallon jug of water, my power is history:)

Amtrak announced they're shutting down from NYC to Boston, along with the Portland, ME line, and don't know when they'll restart service.
I can see em shutting down the Acela service, but they should be able to put plows on front of their regular trains and still have some regular service, if nothing more than to keep people moving. Especially if they're just running diesel engines.

Nope, it's electric along the corridor, but I'm surprised that they're shutting everything down too. The easiest way to keep a railroad clear is to run trains continually, after all, and electric trains are less likely to have issues. Maybe they decided that no employees could get to work or something.

Snow is expected to accumulate awfully fast tonight. I doubt anyone wants to be out in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard if the train gets stuck. Not to mention that people would have to venture out to get to a station to catch the train... Easier to just shut it down for the night.

Jeebus.. A little snow and everything goes nuts. Silly easterners... :P

At least us Easterners can build an arena without the roof caving in. :p

And to be fair, that was still the original roof: about 27 years old. IIRC, it was the only dome that was still the original covering.

True, more trains they have running on the line, the clearer it would stay. Even if they're just running some slow freight trains on the lines, just to keep snow off of the tracks.

Would be pretty simple to put a few extra cases of water, pop and other supplies on board a train just in case they did get stuck.

Hell, if they were really smart, they could be moving more people from the airports in NYC, Boston, Philly and Washington that are all stuck out to places like Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, Cleveland perhaps, anywhere that's not getting socked with snow and have them catch flights to where they want to go from those cities.

Mid-Atlantic Easterners cant handle it.

Plus Hartford is a **** hole.

Plus, Plus Marquette got 24 inches of snow a few weeks ago and we didnt get non stop coverage.

They don't have satelites up in Marquette yet. Everything has to be filmed and then shipped out via Dogsled to Detroit. ;)

No they can't.

That's because there are no people in Marquette. If they had a population like a megalopolis like the east coast, the media might have mentioned it. :)

I love all the dolts walking around the streets of NYC like they've never seen snow before. It's just hilarious TV. I get it if we're talking about South Carolina. NYC? rofl.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Weather forecaster just said this is almost a category 2 hurricane...on top of dropping a ****load of snow on the region.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Sustained winds of 100 mph? I don't think so. Even Paul Douglas has never reached that level of weather terrorism. The highest sustained winds I can find are under 50 mph. Most of the gusts are under 65.

This is fun though. :D

Its the amount of energy in the storm, that he(the weather guesser) is comparing it to, not the winds. We have 3 or 4 inches at my house, whoopee freakin doo

Just checked my barometer, 28.8 is pretty low
