The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

I forgot to grab a jacket when I was leaving this morning. Good thing its pretty warm out.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Ahahahahahahahaha.

Good luck with that. I haven't heard a single IDOT or city plow go by the house in the last six hours. And I live just off a state highway in the far West 'Burbs.

All I need are the interstates to be functional. Even without plows, I'd imagine this morning's rush hour/this evening's rush hour/tomorrow's morning rush hour would do a decent amount towards clearing things up.

Nope. No one is using the interstate. On my way in I went over I-90, and all I saw in either direction was one semi-truck. It looks quite driveable though, as the lane the semi was in I could see bare pavement. This morning's news said that while the interstate was okay, the ramps were impassable.

I-80 was closed from roughly I-294 to well beyond Dekalb, and I-290 was closed. But the Tollway (I-294, I-90, I-88) said their roads were driveable.

Madison's total from Monday and Tuesday was just about 18". I'm about 10 miles south of Madison, and my drifts hit about 5-1/2 feet! It's nice having a 20 hp tractor with a 48" snowblower on it, especially with 500 feet of driveway. It's all cleared, at least for the moment.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Snow seems to have ceased here - maybe flaking a bit, but certainly not snowing anymore. We were due to get between 18" and 25+". We have probably about 10, if that. I'm not complaining, but this is hardly the Snowpocalypse that I was expecting/fearing. We even got our morning session in at the gym, so weather wasn't that terrible.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Sitting at work I get a call from my fiance that the road we work on AND the state highway just south of the office are closed due to snow.

I replied with "funny, that's how I got here this morning."

15" here. Finally stopped.

2 feet of snow in Racine, Wisconsin.

Thawing out from doing some plowing. Knocked back a lot of the older piles back into the field to make more room around here. Will probably have to go out later to do some more and knock the drifts back some more. Just wish we had a cab for the tractor.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Just about 1-2" of snow and a coating of ice here in central PA. Now, it's just slop and big puddles on the roads. I'd sooner have sunshine and cold temperatures than this mess.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

My car needs snow tires as well. Driving while fishtailing around a corner is an art however.

I don't care about fishtailing, that's fun. I am just sick of not being able to go anywhere for a good 5-10 seconds from a complete stop.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Some thicker bands apparently still moving up from the southern side of town, but otherwise this thing appears to be blowing its load somewhere else. Maybe 4 inches thus far, though it's hard to take an educated guess with the wind and the drifting.

I measured 8-9" with drifts to 18". We had a dry slot move in late last night for a few hours that kept us from getting another 6". It was followed by sleet. The snow was fairly moist, not light and feathery as they described in Chicago. It did blow pretty good, but by early this a.m. it was gone.

Yeah. I hate that part too. In fact most of the corners I take are now powerslides instead of turning. Much easier. The worst part about stopping in a RWD car is the starting, especially on a hill.

I don't fishtail too much, having front wheel drive and all. I would drift around every corner in my trucks though. Winter was when my turning circle was smallest.

That seems about right. My street didn't get plowed until sometime this afternoon, so had I not had 4WD I might still be in the middle of the street. Other than getting out to main roads, the commute was actually better today than yesterday.

Almost 2 inches of ice here today, and that's on top of about 48" of snow already on the ground. Worst. Winter. Ever!

Did a double take. This looks like out our door and I took the exact same type of picture. We got probably 15+ over the 2 days with a bunch of sleet that packed things down a bit. My Yardstick goes under when I try and measure to the ground  The dogwoods are buried to past where they start to branch out and the fence around the veggie garden is buried. It is waist high.
