The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Well, why not?!?!

You Westerners scoff at snow.

The Eastern seaboard (i.e. civilization as we know it) collapses when there is more than 3" of snow on the ground. Right now they're calling for a lot more than that stetching from Atlanta to Boston.

Post your weather stories....

Well, if you put more than six inches between your buildings you would have places to put it!

;)

Marquette Michigan is over 65 inches for the year, with only 3 storms. Most have been 2-3 inches here and there. The bigger storms were 24 inches and 14 inches.

i find that if you just go out and pee in the snow, it'll melt faster.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

My godfather (not Godfather) is retiring after 29 years as a line worker at CMP on Tuesday. Naturally we're going to be hit by a blizzard Sunday night.

Some of us know how to handle snow. Here in Maine it takes something special to bring things to a halt. I was working for LL Bean during the Ice Storm in '98 and we never closed. I remember working for Microsoft and we were expected to be in no matter what. One day we got a call from HQ that our call volume was going up because the center in Nashville was closing due to weather. I checked the forecast...there was a 60% chance of snow that may accumulate as much as 2 whole inches! Crippling.

Blizzard warnings for tonight and tomorrow all along the coast of Maine, batten done the hatches. In my case that means bring in some wood so I'm warm when the power goes out and maybe fill a few buckets so the toilet flushes:)

I don't know what is going on where you are now, but it hasn't started snowing in DC yet.

its barely started... its that i had a later evening flight... I think I realize now that I had the flexibility to make changes earlier yesterday but I didn't know any better. Bottom line is I can't get out of here today... everything I've seen for DC says that its going to near to nothing. I know a lot of people (and possibly gov't workers) will probably get stranded elsewhere, but I can't imagine it'll be enough for the government to close so I'll have to eat a day.

Correct. It's flurrying now, but not sticking.

The lady friend is driving from Washington, DC to around New Brunswick, NJ, and reports that visibility is about one car-length around Philadelphia.

Aaaand she's stopping for the night around Mount Holly, NJ, because she doesn't think it's drivable north of there. Take it with a small grain of salt since she's not an experienced winter driver, but it does sound horrid out there.

*hands East Coast several buckets of kittens and a recording of the PK Ditty*

You know what to do.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

The Weather Channel and Twitter indicates the storm is fizzling...the National Weather Service just upped our expected totals from 12-16" to 14-18" of snow.
One of these things is not like the other....

The storm is still early, and isnt really supposed to ramp up until it gets over Cape Cod/Gulf of Maine tonight.

Weatherunderground is knocking the snow totals down also, must be tracking away

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Silver Spring MD got zippo. Eastern Shore looks like they're getting inundated.

Oldest boy drove back to VA Beach with a buddy. Things went fine until they got just east of Richmond. Then the roads went to heck in a handbasket. Middle son went to practice today and raced back to his apt to beat the snow. Youngest went over to the GF in Gaithersburg.

Surprisingly, we still have power.

American Airlines just canceled all flights in/out of the Northeast until 10AM Monday.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Amtrak announced they're shutting down from NYC to Boston, along with the Portland, ME line, and don't know when they'll restart service.
