The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

And already, people are suing Facebook and the stock rating companies for making them lose money. I'll be shocked if a judge actually hears the case. Don't get me started on CBS MarketWatch calling Facebook the new Lehman Brothers.

The issue with the Facebook valuation is that it is priced expecting a ton of revenue growth ( Amazon has a similar problem), if (when?) they don't make the numbers they need the stock has only one way to go: down. I'm not going to be interested in Facebook until the price reaches the teens (and even then I'd prefer the low teens) because I just don't think that the needed growth will happen (I don't think that Facebook translates well to mobile and that's going to keep away the next generation of users).

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

I disagree. I think Facebook is the only thing that translates well to mobile beyond texting. Twitter is ok but I see that as less sustainable than Facebook. Mobile phones are only getting more powerful and more capable of supporting a more feature-rich Facebook (with ads).

I really don't understand these supposed barriers to "monetizing the mobile platform". If Facebook isn't able to do this, no one will.

People are much less likely to click on adds on a mobile devices. Until that changes, monetizing mobile users will be difficult for anyone. Who knows if the ad model will work for mobile.

I suppose. But advertising is more than just clickthroughs. I mean, how was television monetized? Same principle.

Well anything is possible. But it's already priced ($85billion market cap ) like it has the ad revenue monetized. I wouldn't buy it here but then again I missed AMZN run, and still think it's over priced even though I really really like the service (return policy, free shipping, navigation etc..).

On the other news ATVI (Blizzard) Diablo III breaks 6million ... it might give ATVI a pop although the WOW subscription has been going down.
I still like gaming sector (TTWO: GTA V should be coming out next year), EA, ATVI etc... since they are out of favor for a trade (1 to 2 years)

Activision Blizzard Inc. said Wednesday that it sold more than 3.5 million copies of its "Diablo III" video game in the first 24 hours of its release and 6.3 million copies in its first week on sale.

"Diablo III" had long been anticipated by fans. The last entry in its series was released 12 years ago, a lifetime in the gaming world when compared with franchises like "World of Warcraft" and "Call of Duty," which regularly receive updates.

"Diablo II," released in the summer of 2000, sold 4 million copies in the year after it debuted.

Fully agree. I like it a bit lower as well. Plus I really want to see the litigation over the IPO to play out.

I always thought blizzard was private owned. I love the idea of buying blizzard - they are an undisputed monopoly and a brand with (probably) good revenue. Their price looks steady, have you made money on a long term investment with these guys?

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Just looking at the basics stats for ATVI, I'm not sure this is a great stock...

Apples and oranges but... Take MMM. Similar PE ratio but an annual dividend nearly twice that of ATVI. An EPS over seven times what ATVI is pulling in. They have had virtually no growth for over three years. Even compared to the indices. Not a lot of growth. Not really protected by a dividend.

Obviously there's more to a stock than just the basics but this was my five-minute glance at it.

I've actually been monitoring ATVI for a while now. The only reasons I haven't yet pulled the trigger are that tech companies usually hurt in the summer and I'm worried about the WoW revenue stream. I'm looking forward to if the new WoW expansion pack will be good or a flop.

Yeah several times on TTWO ... GTA franchise pop and possible buyout (EA made an offer several years ago). I wouldn't buy this sector for the long term (5+ years) since they are so cyclical with game rollout and new consoles.

I think about 50% of the revenue at ATVI is from Blizzard's WoW and that subscription has been going down a bit. and the projection isn't all that great if you overlay Sony's EQ (which slowly shut down servers and made it free (limited content) this year 99-2012). I'm not sure what they are doing about going into mobile market (Zynga 5billion market cap).

Be on the lookout for Sara Lee (SLE)'s split and special dividend in the very near future (I think I heard June 28th). At below 20 bucks a share, it looks ripe for the picking.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Wow, every time Facebook gets around $28 a share, it's like a virtual bank panic. Everyone runs to sell. VERY active stock.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Markets are stablizing for now. Interest rates hit bottom again...dipping below 3.5% on a 30 yr. Watching because I have a shiny new loan for a healthy amount...just need to find the place.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

It turns out JP Morgan is run by a Socialist

J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM: 35.03, +0.38, +1.10%) chief Jamie Dimon couldn't apologize enough for his bank's billions of dollars in trading losses, so on Wednesday he escalated by pleading for "Old Testament Justice."

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and death to "big, dumb banks."

"We have to get rid of anything that looks like too-big-to-fail," Dimon told the Senate Banking Committee. "We have to allow our big institutions to fail. It's part of the health of the system. We shouldn't prop them up. We have to allow them to fail."

Regulators should wind them down through the same orderly resolution process that got America out of the savings and loan crisis. Since 2008, regulators have been doing just that at hundreds of smaller banks, just not the lumbering leviathans that seem to deserve it.

"I wouldn't call it resolution," Dimon continued. "I think that's the wrong name. I personally would call it bankruptcy for big, dumb banks."

Here's how he further advised the Senate: "When you have bankruptcy, I'd have clawbacks. I'd fire the management. I'd fire the board. I'd wipe out the equity. And the unsecured [creditors] should recover whatever they'd recover like in a normal bankruptcy.

"I think the banks should be dismantled after that, and their name should be buried in disgrace. So there's a little Old Testament justice here."

Damm Marxist calling for more regulation of the banking industry.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

The Sara Lee (now Hillshire Brands, which people don't like :p) split, according to their website, is to happen June 28th. I believe there's still time to get some shares in before the split; the special dividend is $3.00 per share, but be aware that this is likely a payment in lieu of dividend, and if so, that would mean it will not be qualified (meaning you'll likely have to pay taxes on it based upon your tax bracket, just like any unqualified dividend, such as from a REIT).

Actually, here's an interesting thought... I wonder if companies would offer "payment in lieu of dividend" as a loophole to the Obummercare regulation, where dividends (the idea of "qualified dividends" did not appear until the 2003 tax policy, and would expire as part of Taxmageddon) are subject to additional government withholding, but since "payments in lieu of dividend" are treated as miscellaneous income, it's be the traditional tax rate.

3M set a record today on lowest rates for company bonds.

Over a $1 billion in bonds issued. $650 million at 1% for 5-years and $600 million at 2% for 10-years. Incredible that a company can command such low rates. I believe S&P gave it an AA- rating.

Considering the Federal Funds Rate and their credit rating, I can't say that I'm surprised.

I am wondering if we'll be seeing QE3 soon... Twist II already happened...
