The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

Yeah, high school championships are easily the most stressful to officiate outside of FIFA and Olympic level events, it means so much to so many people. I've had to help kids up off the the field after losing a state championship game in overtime.

I do agree with Handy that allowing kids to participate should be the default though.

Oh, I am absolutely about allowing participation and making sure that trans kids are provided ample opportunity to express themselves through sport. As I've said, for 90% of trans athletes, this isn't going to matter because no one really cares who came in 7th place of 23 that ran the Girl's 1500m. What I'm not cool with is that the people who are pushing for inclusivity are also the ones who are declaring the feelings of "conservatives" instantly invalid. Pot meet Kettle.

You see the same thing with anti-gun people who invalidate all the good things that come from hunting because "Guns are bad 1000% of the time". There is just no room for nuance in today's political climate.

Another public financed stadium quandary. This time in scenic Pawtucket, RI.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/06...e-lack-leadership-hopefully-we-dont-lose-this

Pawtucket lost the Pawsox because they had an old, crumbling stadium, no money to build a new one, and nearby Worcester offering to do it for the new team owners. Worcester had been looking for a catalyst to rebuild an entire section of the city, and this was it. Pawtucket really had no chance once Worcester's offer came in.

Also, the new Polar Park is strange - it looked old from the outside even before it was finished (the awful sky blue paint doesn't help), but inside it's absolutely beautiful. And the redesign of Kelly Square is a bit interesting with the kidney-shaped rotary, but so much better than the previous wide-open free-for-all.

I suppose I can throw my 5 cents in on the trans girls in sports argument.

No one here is saying "throw fair standards out the window."

What we're saying is "we can emphasize a fair standard and the safety and well-being of trans kids at the same time," especially considering trans people up to age 30 have an attempted suicide rate of 41% and are especially prone to substance abuse.

We are also saying this needs to be left up to sports' governing bodies, not lawmakers looking to score cheap political points.

The Right has launched an all out assault on LGBT youth, and are making it abundantly clear they want to overturn Obergefell, Lawrence, and Gideon. KBJ was asked to define "woman." Drag Queen Story Hour has been accused of harming children. A whole bunch of states outlawing affirming care for trans youth. If this was truly about fairness in sports, they'd have stopped there. Now they're making it illegal to say gay. I have to believe their end goal is our extermination. Their voters are eating all of this up via Tucker and Ben and Stephen.

"We can disagree and still be friends" is for pineapple on pizza or whether "This Is Us" is quality television. Not for jeopardizing the health, safety, and well-being of my community so a politician can score cheap PR points.

Re: Sports governing bodies. I know the Olympic ones can be reasonably protected from political idiots like above (athletes being required to have 1/3 of voting power helps), but I don’t how many states have their HS bodies politically protected. I mean states like Texas have separate public and private school ones and the public UIL is run through the University of Texas so it goes on the whims of their politicians (Texas is just the worst at everything). I know some states like Alaska have a separate organization that runs things independently.

Man I thought the MNGOP was stupid...the MIGOP Primary Governors Race is one to behold!

For those keeping score at home, the Michigan GOP entered May with 10 candidates.

They're down to four*. It's June 9th.

Election day for the Republican primary is August 2nd.

* I mean, I'm sure one of the disqualified candidates could still win the nomination from prison or be a write in.

That probably gains him more votes with the DERP in MI....

I'm gonna have a hard time hanging out in Chesterfield, MI in two weeks and keeping my mouth shut while out eating if this stuff is the talk of the town.

I don't think most people are even thinking about the gubernatorial race yet. It's just primary season.
