The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

Status
Not open for further replies.
Top-level Census is out:
Texas +2
Florida +1
North Carolina +1
Montana +1
Oregon +1
Colorado +1
West Va. -1
California -1
Illinois -1
Ohio -1
Michigan -1
Penn. -1
N.Y. -1

Probably a boon for the GOP short term. Though most of the growth in the states gaining seats are in the urban centers and most of the decline in the states losing seats are rural, so it's probably not as big a gain for them as it appears. And by the end of the decade, if they gerrymander too much, there could be a huge blue swing if the urban migration overwhelms the gerrymander.

Texas +2 R
Florida +1 R
North Carolina +1 R
Montana +1 R
Oregon +1 D
Colorado +1 D
West Va. -1 R
California -1 D
Illinois -1 D
Ohio -1 D
Michigan -1 D
Penn. -1 D
N.Y. -1 D

R +4
D -4

It aint good, but of those gaining states only MT is hard R within a couple cycles.

Also note those gains are educated people moving in turning the states blue.

Also, the next time we have a dependable Dem majority:

PR +6 D
DC +2 Sen, +1 Rep (in Congress only, not EV) D

(with whatever adjustments down to compensate)

Yeah, but they can probably find safe red districts to attach all those "new blues" to...for now.

For now.

538 had a great analysis about gerrymandering about 6 years ago. When you get to about +8 the effect completely reverses and results in a net loss for the gerrymanderer. What gerrymandering really does is turn a gentle beach into a cliff.

I think this is addition by subtraction and addition by addition in some places. CA and NY can probably kill off a GOP district (MN would have). MT is said to likely go east-west and likely means 50:50 split.

For Michigan I think the seat that gets squeezed is either Slotkin (D) or Upton (R). Depends on how the redistricting goes with the new system. Will be interesting if Lansing (a city that is in 3 counties) gets split up into 3 different districts again. Or if it is allowed to become one full district with the addition of say Jackson, Calhoun, and Livingston.

We've been hemorrhaging EV for decades because of the flight from the Midwest and Northeast, but a funny thing happened: we started turning the sunny destination states (first CA, then NM and NV, then AZ, eventually TX) and the GOP's rising star in the Rust Belt means now they're stuck with those states that are fading (OH, eventually MI, WI, PA).

States are like main sequence stars. They go through a life cycle: when they explode in growth they will be red (no laws, laughable business inducements, wildcatting no education population), when they stabilize they will become blue giants (demand for adult infrastructure, education, an economy built for human beings instead of business), and then they will shrink and die as red dwarves (aging reactionary population, talented kids leave for the next exciting blue giant leaving behind the shiftless self-medicating orcs).

Florida.

A Miami school has discouraged teachers from getting the Covid vaccine, saying any vaccinated employees will be barred from interacting with students.

Centner Academy leadership cited debunked claims of non-vaccinated people being "negatively impacted" by contact with vaccinated people.

...

The Centner Academy, a fee-paying school, is located in Miami's Design District. Annual tuition begins at $15,160 (?10,898) for pre-school students and goes up to nearly $30,000 for middle school students, who are around 13-15 years old.

Co-founder Leila Centner informed parents on Monday that, when possible, the academy's policy is to not employ anyone who has received a Covid-19 vaccine at this time, CBS Miami reported.

In a letter last week to staff, first reported by the New York Times, Mrs Centner said teachers must notify the school if they had already received the jab.

"We cannot allow recently vaccinated people to be near our students until more information is known," Mrs Centner wrote.

Teachers who wait to get vaccinated after the school year ends will be allowed to return only when clinical trials on the vaccine are completed, assuming a position at the school is still available.

Mrs Centner also repeated a false claim of vaccinated individuals affecting unvaccinated people, saying three women in the school's community had their menstrual cycles "impacted after having spent time with a vaccinated person".

To be fair, this does not appear to be Zombie Cult herp-a-derps, it appears to be rich New Agey morons who unaccountably aren't living in Marin County. They probably voted for Jill Stein.

Whoa whoa. Republicans are ok with government mandating behavior of businesses ?? Montana gov sure knows his audience with this worthless legislation lately

”A new bill that has passed in the Montana legislature prohibits a person or governmental entity from denying goods, services or employment opportunities based on vaccination status and bans employers from requiring their workers to get a particular vaccine.”

Yeah that should hold up about as well as his stupid "Federal Gun Prohibitions Don't Count Here" bill he just signed. Montana and Idaho don't seem to understand how the country actually works...

I think they know, they just know their voters don't know. This way they:

1) tub thump about they're takin our gunz durr durr
2) show they are "doing something" by passing their derp
3) be indignant when the Supremacy Clause strikes their crap down

This is all theater for their rubes.

So the vaccinated person knocked them up?

So the vaccinated person knocked them up?

I heard a story about this on the Beeb. These people believe the vaccine "transmits something which affects the sexuality of surrounding people." Direct quote from one of the school's nuts.

These people are crazier than a Mormon with a wife over 14.
