Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

It is one of the dumbest hills I’ve ever seen

It is a TV show.

Related: still waiting to hear the outrage on Three's Company on the LGBTQ angle. ;) IMO, that show was WAY worse on social issues pertaining to this day.

Rube, you're not racist for liking The Dukes of Hazard. You just don't give a sh-t that The Dukes of Hazard used a racist symbol of hatred -- the American swastika - because it didn't hurt you. Something that doesn't hurt you doesn't matter to you. You're not a racist, you're just selfish.

We get it. You don't need to keep wriggling.

Nah, nah, nah. They used the symbol in a NON-racist way, just like the f*ing (pardon my language) Nazis used a good symbol in a bad way. That's my point. We can't change symbols from bad to good, only good to bad? Bullsh*. That is pure bullsh*.

Now, I agree that some still use that symbol/flag in a bad way, and f them. Wholeheartedly.

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

I'll amend my statement: you're not selfish, that's not fair and I apologize and withdraw the ad hom. You're not a bad person, I know that from our many talks. But in this case I think you're being oblivious. A rube, as it were.

If a majority of black people said that confederate symbols were racist in any context, would you change your mind?

"Don't believe everything you think." Just because an opinion seems reasonable to you should not in principle prevent you from detecting your own bias and saying, "self, you're being a fool, cut it out." One self-check is to look around at the people who hold the same opinion. If they are really, really bad people, that's not dispositive, but it is a sign.

I know it's a racist symbol. There are some that are/were trying to change that. The Dukes were trying to change that. Kudos on that show, trying to turn something bad into something not bad. *shrug* that's it.

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

A bunch of white people do not get to change the symbol. The oppressor doesn't forgive himself.

If Donald Glover wants to start using the battle flag as a neutral symbol of southern identity in Atlanta*, and vast swaths of American blacks are on board, maybe I'll change my mind. Until then, it's a symbol of hatred, murder, and torture and we don't get to whitesplain any different.

* Assuming it ever comes back.

What do you mean "we can change symbols from good to bad?". No one changed the swastika. The fact is Hilter was a monster that sought to remove an entire race from the freaking planet and co-opted an existing symbol along the way. No one "allowed it" to be changed. No on said, "yeah, we are changing it's meaning". The origins of the swastika remain the same. However, you'd be a fool to want to display it now just like you'd be a fool to want to display the confederate flag because of the history.

Go live your life as a good 'ol boy never meaning no harm. No one is stopping you. :) But if you want to display that flag while doing so I'm going to give you s**t until the cows come home.

Really? Is there an episode where the Dukes battle the Klan?

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

The right facing swastika is always going to be associated with the war and be considered bad at this point.

The left facing swastika is still used in asia and I believe is a symbol of good luck. This pre-dates the WWs.

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

You know that was fiction, right?

You like lousy tv shows. We get it.

That actually HELPS my point. It's fiction. So let the General Lee vehicle keep the flag. :p

That show wasnt self aware and making some point about racism. It was just racist because it could be.
The casual, benign sort of racism that floats under the surface far enough that most people don't give it a second thought.

Did the Dukes have a black friend? I never watched that ****, so don't know. Maybe a guy that worked down at the local garage, or perhaps grew cotton at the farm down the road a piece?

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

Over 7 seasons, there were 19 black characters. Only one of them appeared in more than 2 episodes.

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

It's like the n-word. Black people can "take it back" amongst themselves, but that doesn't mean others (especially whites) can use it again in any context without being offensive.
