That show wasnt self aware and making some point about racism. It was just racist because it could be.

It's worse than that; it was racist because it didn't even think about it.

I don't think the General Lee was a deliberately stick in the eye to POC. I think it was "local color" like the water tower in Petticoat Junction. And that is privilege.

It would be like a German sitcom where guys wear the swastika but never do anything political and even have some Jewish friends. The very act of portraying it as neutral is burying the guilt and saying "we cool now, right?"

The last 50 years have been white America going down the checklist: "apologize for slavery, apologize for Native American genocide, apologize for internment, apologize for sexism, apologize for homophobia. OK, we done here? ARE YOU SATISFIED?"

The answer is no, oppressed people with never be satisfied until:

1. The oppression stops
2. There are tangible reparations
3. The oppressor stops feeling put upon

And they get to tell us when we're cool. We're like an abusive husband buying flowers. That's not gonna cut it.

I can see Brent's point. This board doesn't really seem to understand "Southern Culture" outside of slavery and many of the negative things that still sprout down there. There is a positive side to it.

Unfortunately recent events have dragged the "Southern Life" aspect away from the flag and replaced it with racism and moronic hillbillies that believe the Civil War is still at Halftime. It was a symbol that wasn't interpreted as hateful 8-10 years ago as it is now.

Another example of symbols changing meaning over time: My interest in the Marvel Movies got me reading Comic Books on a regular basis. One of my favorite characters is Frank Castle a.k.a The Punisher. Over the years, I bought several items with the Punisher Skull on them. 8 years ago I would just be viewed as a comic nerd. What about now? What do you think would happen if I wore that T-shirt in Chicago? I stand by my love of the character of Frank Castle. But his symbol has been taken over by some not so savory groups in the past 5 or so years. Am I an ******* for not burning my T-shirts and belt buckle because the personal meaning to me doesn't align with society's current views? I don't prominently wear them because I know how they will be interpreted. But I also feel that I shouldn't have to disown my comic fandom either.

I think the difference lies in that the Punisher symbol didn't start as a symbol for something negative. Your story is similar to how the "ok" hand sign now means white power. Imagine trying to tell adidas colleagues that their 3 stripes hand sign is also used for white power.

Point of the story: just because we didn't see that flag as horrible 8-10 years ago doesn't mean others didn't too. I don't care enough about a fictional orange car to decide their pain wasn't important because I like a tv show.

Tennessee boy here, grew up watching DoH (before that dastardly Homer Simpson co-opted the term). Kepler is 100% correct - the show absolutely ignored racism, all the while prominently displaying one of its greatest symbols. Frankly, it’s practically white-supremacist propaganda - it’s what they wish southern life was like - nothing but white people who never had to address race in any way, shape, or form. Crack cocaine for the crackers.

The casual, benign sort of racism that floats under the surface far enough that most people don't give it a second thought.

Did the Dukes have a black friend? I never watched that ****, so don't know. Maybe a guy that worked down at the local garage, or perhaps grew cotton at the farm down the road a piece?

There were at least two black characters on the show, one that was rather prominent, off the top of my head. One was a mechanic of some sort IIRC (no, not Cooter), and the other was Chickasaw County Sheriff Little, the neighboring county to Hazzard, and he was portrayed as a no-nonsense by-the-book sheriff.

Also, if you care to read more at the diversity of the cast of the Dukes show:
What's worth noting, though, is that The Dukes of Hazzard, while not the most diverse show in television history, did, in fact, feature some black characters. The only regular black character was neighboring Chickasaw County Sheriff Little, portrayed by Don Pedro Colley, but over the course of seven seasons, the show featured at least 19 other black characters. Ji-Tu Cumbuka, Kevin Peter Hall, Al White (2 episodes), Hal Williams, Herb Jefferson Jr. (2 episodes), Steven Williams (2 episodes), Wally Taylor, John Dewey Carter, Ella Mae Brown, Ernie Hudson, James Reynolds, Woody Strode, Harrison Page, Teddy Wilson, Jesse D. Goins, William Allen Young, James Avery, Tony Brubaker, and Ken Foreeall had roles during the series' 146 episodes.

That's an average of about one every seven episodes, at a time when the traditional lack of diversity on television was a lot worse than it was in, say, the nineties. Yet The Dukes of Hazzard, set in rural Georgia, outpaced two of the biggest 90s hits on television. In its 180-episode run, Seinfeld only managed to feature 19 black characters, while Friends was so white, they made a song about it:

In case you weren't counting, that's 24 black characters in ten seasons, and 236 episodes. And both of those shows were set in New York City.

Any real Georgians bearing any resemblance to Bo or Luke would unquestionably be racist as F, and the show, pardon the term, whitewashed that aspect completely. If someone wanted to create an infomercial pushing the narrative that it’s possible to be good people while casually, meaninglessly displaying racist symbols, you could scarcely do better. There is no question that the show moved the use of the Confederate Battle Flag toward the mainstream - it made it just a little bit more okay to display it. “No, I’m not racist, just a big fan of Bo and Luke.”
