The States : red states in a race to the bottom

So while reading a Fark thread, there was a nugget buried in the linked article about Ohio and about the sitting President of the State Senate becoming the Speaker of the House in January. Thinking that seemed like a downgrade and wondering why he'd give up his senate seat, I looked into it slightly more. Turns out the GOP Ohio House Caucus unanimously voted for a sitting state senator to become their next Speaker.

In what world is electing a member of the other part of the legislature to control your own side a smart move? Like why would you cede control to someone outside, effectively shifting all of your own leadership positions down by one slot? And how is it appropriate to have a sitting state senator in control of the state house?

If you’re on the jury for the Penny case for negligent homicide, how do you vote?

How in the world could I possibly know that? I didn't hear a single word of testimony. I didn't get to see a single exhibit as admitted into evidence. I didn't get to observe any witnesses testify, to judge their credibility. I didn't get to hear the arguments of counsel. I didn't get to hear or read the judge's instructions as to the law to apply. How in the fukkk do I know how I would have voted on that jury?

So that is what this is about? You expect that sitting here in the comfort of my armchair here in Minnesota, I should be outraged by the jury's verdict?

I thought the guy should have been prosecuted. Even with the not guilty verdict, I still think that was the right decision. I also expected that he would be found guilty of some charge.

But I am not in the business of second-guessing jury decisions. I believe in the jury system. You remember, right? I'm the idiot who continuously expresses faith in our institutions.

The jury found him not guilty. I don't know why. Maybe if I had seen and heard what they did, they would have convinced me to vote that way as well. Maybe I would have been one of the jurors holding out for a conviction. Sorry, I don't claim to have the omnipotent powers that you and some others claim to have that without even being somewhere, you just "know" exactly what the correct answer is.

A man having a mental health crisis and no weapons on him shouldn’t be killed, much less by a civilian. If you were so concerned over our indifference about Mr. T getting murdered that you needed to remind us libs more than once that vigilante justice isn’t okay and not the kind of world we want to live in, I figured this would be the perfect example to express more concern about vigilante justice running rampant. Some of us have been here to remind you that it’s been happening for decades, if not centuries. Just not to me or you or our new (dead) friend Mr. Thompson.
I’m not outraged by the verdict. Not even surprised. Disappointed? Sure. Having been apart of hundreds of physical restraints over the years, not a single one ever involved blocking an airway. Ever. And not for 6 minutes. And certainly not for 51 seconds after someone’s body went limp. Not to mention I would have administered CPR immediately if someone had no pulse. You can’t get HIV from saliva, Mr. NYPD policeman who took the witness stand and said you didn’t do CPR because you didn’t want to get HIV lol. It’s okay to provide chest compressions instead, Mr. Policeman. In fact, forget the breaths. The heart needs to pump, because all the breaths in the world won’t matter if the heart isn’t pumping. But it’s okay, Mr. Policeman. You didn’t kill Jordan Neely. Daniel Penny did.
Our jury system is one of the best, if not the best, in the world. Our institutions, when run by competent people and used for good, are some of the strongest in the world. Go on somewhere with that nonsense.

Any system which allows stupid people to impose decisions on smart people is immoral, anti-human, and illegitimate.

Time to put the dummies back in their box. Democracy cannot be a license to vote for wishes over facts.

Maryland's Governor posted video of the "drones" flying above his house.

Turns out, it was the constellation Orion in the night sky.

Louisiana passed law that makes it illegal for public health officials to promote any vaccine

Louisiana and NO deserve everything they have coming . Maybe it won’t be a flood that takes them out for good
