The States: Maybe A National Divorce Is A Good Idea After All

The video of the collapse is insane. How does that tanker hit the bridge? Was the captain drunk? I guess having it happen at 1:30am prevented more deaths. I can only imagine how many more people would have died if this happened at 1:30pm.

All of this is secondhand accounts:

It was a harbor pilot (CNN), so doubtful.

sounds more like it was a loss of power or loss of hydraulics and they were trying to get them restarted (power flickers). You can see a huge plume of smoke coming from the stacks at the last few moments. Likely a last ditch attempt to full reverse. In full reverse you lose the ability to steer.

seems like this was just a sequence of events where there was nothing they could do and there were no good choices.

This was updated 3 minutes ago,

BALTIMORE (AP) — A container ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing it to snap and plunge into the river below. Several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers searched for survivors.

The operators of the ship issued a mayday call moments before the crash that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.

The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

This is just a very basic observation, mind you, but it does look like the amount of headlights from traffic drops significantly right before impact, especially compared to where it is in the minute before, so they did a good job there. I know that's cold comfort for the people who were there, including the maintenance crews, but still.

Photos from this morning also show that there was construction work on the bridge limiting traffic in one direction to just one lane.

Fwiw, for a ship like that, the population engine is separate from the power generator. Not to say the faults are unrelated, just that it’s direct drive from the engine to the prop with no electrical system like a cruise ship.

Deep State planned it! Biden's sagging poll numbers needed a crisis bump and now he can funnel lots of federal money to Maryland for the rebuild.

Check into the harbor pilot's creds, I'll bet he was CIA/NSA. ;-)
