The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

A long time ago I remember a meltdown like this happened in Connecticut where a contest of wills between the legislature and the governor lasted for about a year past the deadline for coming up with a budget.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Didn't we settle the matter 150 years ago?

Maybe Mexico is upset and wants Texas back?? Wait! That's it! Obama is going to sell Texas to Mexico!!

Trade them straight up Texas for Baja. It's gorgeous and it has fewer Texans. And it DQs Cruz, who gets the rare North American hat trick.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Wouldn't they have to add a constitutional amendment to allow them to leave? Not easy, but I think that if enough of the states wanted to band together they could make it happen.

It's a great question. We settled secession, but we've never considered defenestration.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

It would be denying the rights of the citizens of the state to be American citizens, for one thing.

Yeah, a state leaving the Union that would have to be done by a vote, and then those who wanted to remain American citizens would either have to move their homes or petition for dual citizenship, or something like that. Before all of that, of course, there'd have to be an amendment to actually establish an exit procedure, like you guys were saying earlier.

Executive Order. If we could buy Alaska and the Louisiana Purchase, why can't we sell a border state back to Mexico?

Selling Texas to Mexico would be terrific. Throw in Arizona as a sweetener.

The good guy won in the NY State Senate race. Technically this makes the Senate majority Democratic, but there is a cadre of Dem Senators who vote with the state GOP because of some sort of incomprehensibly disgusting dealmaking that took place during the time when pretty much every member of the leadership of both parties was an inch from going to jail on corruption charges.

I love me some Tequila

Speaking of, I'll take my bigotry straight, no chaser.

During a Monday rally in the state capital Raleigh with supporters of the law that keeps transgender people from using the public bathroom of their choice, state Sen. Buck Newton, the GOP nominee for attorney general, strayed from the typical conservative talking points about public safety.

"Go home, tell your friends and family who had to work today what this is all about and how hard we must fight to keep our state straight," Newton told attendees at the rally, according to a video posted by Progress North Carolina Action.

At least he's honest.
