The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

In MN, state legislators receive a base pay somewhere in the $40k range the last time I looked around seven or eight years ago. It's not a huge amount, but then they all receive a per diem of around $150, which could be close to $200 today. For those elected officials from the Northland, the per diem could be considered about right once you factor in a moderately priced hotel. For those legislators from around the various Twin Cities' districts, it's all gravy.

Since the Standing Rock Tribe is opposing the pipeline, are they now the Fighting Sioux?

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Do very many other people have multiple ballot lines with the same people's names on them in their state?

Here, there are six ballot lines, the four parties we all know, plus "Independents Party" (which has the same candidate as the Republicans) and the Working Families Party (which has the same candidate as the Democrats). Neither of these two have any Presidential candidate, it is for state government and Congress only.

Back in 2010, the Working Families Party ballot line actually determined who would be governor. The candidate on the Republican ballot line received more votes than the candidate on the Democrat ballot line. But the candidate on the Democrat ballot line also was the candidate on the Working Families ballot line, and it was those incremental votes that got him elected.

Working Families Party has a ballot line in several heavily Democratic states, and "coincidentally," all those states have public financing of elections. A cynical person might suspect that keeping the WFP around is a way to get incremental extra state money to fund political operations that are de facto Democrat, just technically separate on paper.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

The 8th was a doubly sad day for WI and MI. Not only did they elect a GOP president...but they transitioned towards being much redder themselves.

It seems like states that make a statement like these find themselves sliding down a slippery path. Is there a chance that these two become the MO or even KS of the upper Midwest? The first thing I looked for Wednesday morning after signing off at 10pm was to see if MN stayed blue.

I consider and continue to consider even moral victories like a blue vote for the state to be extremely important for its character and future.

What is Going in North Carolina Needs to Be Discussed More

So if McCory convinces the GOP controlled Legislature (a super majority) that the results werent kosher they can overthrow the election and put him into office and it is not judicially reversible? The people voted to have the Supreme Court have a liberal majority and the Legislature can vote to add two more justices that McCrory can nominate to offset the will of the people?

....wow.
It's like they are brazenly doing whatever they want and realize the media won't portray them for what they are.

I mean, Slate is "the media".

People keep wanting to blame the media when all the information is right there. It's just that people don't want to listen to it.

Such a move would be the single greatest thing to ever happen to the Democratic Party in NC, which is why it'll never be tried.

Court packing like it's 1937. Classy.

With these kind of antics, I don't expect the Republican wave to last beyond Trump's first term. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump himself didn't make it through one full term. He already seems overwhelmed and bored. With every passing day, it becomes obvious that he just wanted easy press.

Apparently the FEC is asking him about $1.5MM in campaign contribution "abnormalities." He learned the tools of the political trade, but not the tricks.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Just try it again in a few years after they pack the federal courts with their dupes.
If this case forces an reexamination of Maryland, I'm all for it.

And you can throw in NC and FLA too.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

I just saw the thing that the 2001 redistricting is the one that got tossed. Misprint, or have they seriously been fighting over this for 15 years?
